Marlee Matlin Is Paying Back Taxes

Marlee Matlin IRS

What is the deal with celebrities and not paying taxes? Are they really so oblivious to their own income that they just can't be bothered with properly doing them? It makes no sense!

Anyway, Marlee Matlin is paying $50,000 dollars in back taxes:

"I'm paying it back. I'm not shying away from it and I'm certainly not ashamed of it," Matlin says. "It doesn't mean I'm a bad person. It's reality. It's the reality that a lot of people in America are facing."

And, almost as if she heard us forming those questions up there, here is what she said about owing:

"Living modestly in a suburban neighborhood while trying to support four children through private school is not extravagant or living large," Matlin says. "My husband is a Los Angeles area police officer and between the two of us we have always made ends meet in the past – and we will in this circumstance as well."

Well what's wrong with public school? — Dang, it's like she can hear our thoughts, because it turns out she's planning on switching them:

"At the end of the day, it's about the best interests of the children," she says. "Transitioning out of a private school environment will certainly relieve some of the financial pressures but hopefully this will not compromise the kids. I'm not broke. Like everybody else, I owe money. My family is healthy and happy."

Okay, okay. Maybe we jumped the gun a little on saying you were oblivious to your own income. That still doesn't excuse the other celebs in trouble with the tax man right now!

Everyone has to pay taxes, so let's all take a page out of Nike's mantra and Just Do It.

Why on earth would this be news? I want to hear about who is suing a male celebrity for 20 million dollars because they gave him herpes. It is all over news.

It should be against the law for people who don't use social services to have to pay taxes. My tax dollars shouldn't go to support lazy people, people who have more children than they can afford to keep. Nor should it go to support foreign countries who hate us. Our government sucks.

Perez, you ask what's wrong with public school???? What the hell is right? You are so fricken ignorant…. THE UNIONS RUN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS.. NOT GREAT TEACHERS, AND IN FACT GREAT TEACHERS ARE FIRED BECAUSE OF TENURE… The statements you make Perez are so funny it's sad!!! If you had a kid I DARE YOU TO ENROLL THEM IN A PUBLIC SCHOOL IN A DEPRIVED AREA… I DARE YOU!!!!

Hey Perez I get you're well off and have lots of money to give to our loser government, but the taxes we pay for what we get in return service wise is a joke. As for the private school issue being a that I went to both private and public school, my parents busted their asses to send me to private school because public schools in LA suck so bad. Sending your child to an LAUSD school is child abuse as far as Im concerned. California is not 50th in education for a reason. The public schools blow.

you tard, these people probably don't do their own taxes.
    .
As far as the remarks about public schools go, I can't speak to the LA school system, but in general, when normalized for socioeconomic status, family habits, and family structure, children in urban public high schools out perform their privately schooled counter parts in all core areas. This doesn't get publicized because it's not sexy… and what it means is that family has much more to do with how a student performs than the school does.

@TheMrsBradPitt you obviously don't live in Los Angeles and I would like to see a study where public school kids outperform their private school peers. Los Angeles has some of the worst public schools in the country and two-thirds of the people living in the Los Angeles send their kids to private school. A parent shouldn't be judged for sending their child to private school but rather should be commended for taking the necessary steps to insure that their child(ren) get an exemplary education. These are parents who care, make a sacrifice for their kids, and who are sending a message that the public schools are not good enough–which they are absolutely not. I hope this situation with Marlee's taxes do not affect her children's education and they are able to come up with the means to keep their children in their current educational situation.

nothing worse than a rich celebrity complaining about the economy.

Home school your kids…..it is waaayyy better than any private or public school….no bullying and you know where your kids are at all times…..no becoming early grandparents!

Well… where I come from when we file our taxes they can be reassessed and we owe money we didn't think we owed. It is nothing to get all high and mighty judgmental over. Get a grip pretzel.

Re: smccarthy – AMEN!!!!!!! A fellow Angeleno disgusted by the California, particularly LA public school system. A recent study showed that in tax funds alone each pupil in LAUSD gets about 27k in funds per 9 month school year. Can you believe that? I could send my kids to Harvard Westlake or Buckley with GUARANTEED admission into any university they wanted to attend for less than that. When California stops being 50th in education and stops producing "graduates" who can hardly read or write at an 8th grade level, Ill stop bitching. Hell if we could get more than half of students in LAUSD to graduate from High School, that'd be impressive and I'd ease up on them.

  12. 12

Marlee's the reason LAUSD is so bad. No well-off white people send their kids to public schools. Even in upscale Venice or westchester, the schools are nearly 100% black/Latino.

These private schools take full advantage of this, & can cost $20k/yr. So you're paying a fortune in property taxes, yet must fork over private tuition on top.

Re: denverite – Actually minorities would benefit greatly from being in charter schools but since Liberals who choose to use their community for political gain instead of educating their children will never vote for such things. The only Public schools Id EVER send any spawn of mine to would be a charter school. Period…
