Boo! "Don't Say Gay" Bill Has Been Passed

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayPolitik

So much for progress.

This afternoon, State Sen. Stacey Campfield's proposed "Don't Say Gay" bill passed before the Tennessee senate. With a 20-10 vote, the bill prohibits educators from discussing homosexuality in kindergarten through 8th grade classrooms.

Sen. Campfield said the bill is necessary because homosexuality is a “learned behavior.”

We can only think of one real learned behavior that should have a bill passed opposing its teaching - ignorance.

We're very disappointed to hear this news and even more so to think about the gay kids of Tennessee who will be brought up to think something is wrong with them because homosexuality is forbidden to speak of in their schools. Their voices deserve to be heard too and to silence them like this … Shameful!

Well 5-10 years from now when some of these kids come out, they will realize it is not learned. Seriously, is this 1825? If you were to call these people homophobic to their face they would deny it. Ummm, this is homophobia at its finest. It is sad that we need to tell a bunch of state senators to grow up!

  2. 2

well i dont think this is a big surprise as 95% of the shit they teach u in grade school is bullshit, propaganda, fake history, etc… dont learn life lessons from school anyways u should learn them from ur family, ur parents.

  3. 3

he comes that hateful shithead kim k who's so closeted it hurts. another churchie. why does he even bother coming on here.
i'm all for gay rights, but don't think children need to talk about any sexuality until a certain age. if the're teaching sex education, fine. as long as they don't promote anti gay sentiment i'm fine with it.
in high school kids will be able to espress themselves and discuss it with a bit more maturity.
this is tennessee, which borders alabama, so should we be surprised.

  4. 4

This isn't so bad because although the words "gay", "homosexual", etc. have been banned, teachers can still use words & phrases like "different", "it's okay to be what feels right to you", "special", etc. in a positive light. It's easy enough to get around this law.

  5. 5

What was that first amendment again?

  6. 6

Re: Kim K Superstar – what you said is really offensive. people like you is what bringing society down. the fact that you aren't able to accept difference. i think this bill is ridiculous. if you are forbidden to talk about it…kids will grow up learning NOT to accept people who are different.

  7. 7

You're more disappointed that it's going to be harder for you to find a public school boy in Tennessee now.

  8. 8

I don't get it. Why does homosexuality need to be discussed in elementary school? Math, English, reading, writing, and history. These are the things they need to learn.

  9. 9

Why is it the Republicans want smaller government except when it comes to getting into people's bedrooms. Just a bunch of peeping Tom bullshit perverts who can't stop thinking about what the rest of us are doing with our genitals.

  10. 10

Schools are for learning not debating sexual preferences.

  11. 11

Re: Kim K Superstar – You are so retarded. How can you say things like that when we are in the 21th century ? Hello, we are not in middle age, Homosexuality is NOT a mental disorder ! but hey, you must be one of those people who go to church and still think that God has all the answer.

Your comment is really offensive ( but you probably wanted it to be) . By the way, YOU ARE A WRONG STEP IN HUMAN EVOLUTION.

Consider the obvious problem of survival for individuals who allegedly possess a gay gene: individuals who have partners of the same sex are biologically unable to reproduce (without resorting to artificial means). Therefore, if an alleged “gay gene” did exist, the homosexual population eventually would disappear altogether. We now know that it is not scientifically accurate to refer to a “gay gene” as the causative agent in homosexuality. The available evidence clearly establishes that no such gene has been identified. Additionally, evidence exists which documents that homosexuals can change their sexual orientation. Future decisions regarding policies about, and/or treatment of, homosexuals should reflect this knowledge!

READ IT AND CRY YOUR BITTER TEARS!!

Why are some people so hateful.

Stacey Campfield is a Republican member of the Tennessee House of Representatives from the 18th district (northwest Knoxville), best known for his sponsorship of highly conservative legislation such as bills to issue death certificates for aborted fetuses, to force women to look at fetal ultrasound images before having an abortion; for the right to carry guns onto college campuses; to eliminate the state’s pre-kindergarten programs; and for AB821, the so-called "Don't Say Gay" bill which would forbid any discussion of homosexuality in Tennessee elementary or middle schools.

  15. 15

PENTAGON : It was 38 years ago that the American Psychiatric Association dropped gayness from its master list of mental illnesses. Yet the Department of Defense still lists it as a "mental disorder" on par with "mental retardation."

    16

perez you queer. why should kids in elementary school have to discuss sexuality at all? the only thing shameful is you.

  17. 17

I had sex ed in seventh grade. If they can teach 12 and 13 year olds about procreation, I think they can mention homosexuality. If they think talking about homosexuality makes kids gay, they should also cut down on teaching sex ed because it would teach kids how to go out there and make babies.

  18. 18

Re: Kim K Superstar – i don't know what is weirder, your obsession with Kim Kardashian or your obsession with homosexuality. both are very strange though. in the long run it doesn't really matter what you or that other fucking idiot Mad Dog think about gay people. homosexuality has been around since the beginning of humanity and will be around long after the both of you are dead. and tolerance towards LGBT will just keep multiplying.

    Re: Kim K Superstar
Bert Thompson is a creationist, and was director of the Apologetics Press, a creationist organization, from the early 1980s until 2005. Thompson has a B.S. in biology and Ph.D. in microbiology. Thompson is currently the adjunct professor of Bible and science at Southern Christian University in Montgomery, Alabama. Thompson conducted regular YEC lectures entitled "Science & Nature: Two Votes for God" until 2005. In the spring of 2005, Thompson was removed from his post due to accusations of sexual misconduct with young boys. In recent months he has apparently retired from active work involving creationism.

    AWESOME
    AWESOME

party time (dancing around the house)

    God has won!

  21. 21

Why do they have feel the need to start talking sex education in kindergarten?? That to me is ridiculous! Leave this up to the parents at such a young age to decide what to discuss or NOT with their children
! I don't care if you're gay, bi, straight it makes no difference but these kinds of discussions should be left up to the parents. Schools should not be interferring with people's daily lives. Children are very impressionable and parents are the ones that should be the role models for them.
If it is someone's religious belief that homosexuality etc is not ok, then it is no one elses business to say it is. They can teach them about it without overstepping parents on these issues. Teach them acceptance of others, but leave their beliefs out of it as far as sexuality goes.

  22. 22

Re: wiseguy – I already know several of those kids and they were ALL either emotionally or sexually abused as children…it is a condition created by bad experiences from childhood that is never addressed through therapy.

  23. 23

Re: Kim K Superstar – I like you! not in like a lezzy way.

  24. 24

Re: chritti – obviously you haven't gone to college…you poor uneducated thing.

  25. Celt says – reply to this

    25

This is so stupid. I can't believe how dumb people are. Everyone that voted for this bill needs to be asked when they made the conscious decision to be straight. Gay is not a choice, I feel horrible for the kids.

  26. 26

    This is so sad.
    what's next?
revoking brown v. board of education?

  27. 27

Re: Kim K Superstar – Maybe you should also quote the medical research which removed homosexuality fromt he list of mental disorders in the 1970s. Get with the times, hun.

  28. 28

    Re: AttFinch
In other words, he know what he is talking about

  29. 29

Why should homosexuality even be discussed? Being a heterosexual doesn't need any discussion so neither should homosexuality.

  30. 30

They don't teach sex ed in kindergarten! This law prevents a student with gay parents the chance of feeling accepted in their own classroom. Some students may question why a student has two moms or two dads. Instead of letting a teacher address the situation, this law makes the child feel ashamed.

  31. 31

Re: Team Kim RichardsRe: Mad DogRe: Kim K Superstar – Y'all will end up on the wrong side of history. Evolve.

  32. 32

Re: AttFinch – Do not feed the trolls. tsk tsk

  33. 33

    Re: Celt – Right.

  34. 34

It's only forbidden for kids from K-8. Is something wrong with you Perez? You don't even take sex ed till 8th grade. Kids at that age have no business getting confused and taught things like that. Cuz it gets their innocent minds thinking of what 2 men and 2 women do. These are kids and have no business learning anything related to sexual preference, whether it's straight or gay.

  35. 35

I've never been so ashamed to live in Tennessee, and I never thought this ridiculous bill would ever pass. The good news is it was passed by close-minded baby boomers and each generation is becoming progressively more open-minded, especially to gays, and that will help confused children come to terms with who they are.

  36. 36

Re: Team Kim Richards – Well i disagree with you. You are obviously a troll so just go away

  37. 37

Please God send more floods to Tennessee!! You shouldn't say black either!!

  38. 38

There should only be discussion homosexuality to teens

  39. 39

    pure ignorance

  40. 40

Re: Kim K Superstar – oh shit yea thats what they diagnosed you with didnt they?? Mental retardation….Really.
some one needs some real educating

  41. 41

This is horrible. Where is Tennessee - in Uganda?! What happened to free speech?

  42. 42

I have nothing else to say but FOR REAL?!?!… not wait… FOR FUCKING REAL?!?! being gay is a learned behavior… WOW! my hope in humanity just died a little bit…

  43. 43

I'm English so I have no idea what ages Kindergarten - 8th Grade are but surely schools shouldn't mention anything regarding relationships/sexuality (gay, straight, bi) until the students are at least 12-13. They can address the topic of hormonal change from a slight younger age but nothing regarding relationships should even be touched.

Addressing things like that at too young of an age will just encourage underage sex, relationships taking control over your teen years and lots of drama.

I don't understand how anyone who is not white, straight and religious, manages to live in America. You have such a backwards system. Come on over to the UK, we don't give a shit as long are you can talk, read and write properly.

  44. 44

There is no need for homosexuality to be discussed in elementary or middle school(ages 5-13/14). I don't think heterosexuality or homosexuality should be discussed it's not something schools should be in charge of. Thats coping out of something thats a tough subject to cover in a school days worth of time especially from a stranger . Also thats not something little children need to be taught before the even know what sex truly means. Teach our children english, foreign languages, math, science, computers, and things that will enhance their minds so one day they can understand what being gay or straight means. The meaning of sex shouldn't be taught by schools and teachers it should be taught parents and family. We give teachers so much to cover and expect them to make all of the kids they teach Harvard graduates. Teacher need to be paid more for everything they do especially when we all know the parents need to pick up slack and take responsibility for the well being of the kids.

  45. 45

Re: Mad Dog – where did you get your conclusions about this absurd thing you said?

  46. 46

Re: Kim K Superstar – homo is not a mental disorder, moron. people are born gay and they're totally capable of being a normal human being, even better than you, with your brain stuck in the 1700s… people don't do anything gay to get validated, they do it because they are gay and refuse to hide in shame, opposed to your stupidity, that should be 6 feet under…

  47. 47

I'm not even terribly pro gay myself but even I know this is wrong. It is not a learned behavior. Whether or not kids at that age are ready to discuss issues like that is not really what caught my eye. It was the reasoning behind why the bill was passed which is an absolutely moronic explanation.

  48. 48

BULL SHIT! if this is "the land of the free" I don't want to be apart of it. They won't admitted to be homophobic but this shit is the worst thing I have ever heard. If you can't say gay let's just see how hard it is for homophobes to not say gay if you can't use the word how will you be homophobic. Dumb ignorant people I have seen hundreds of people use the word "gay" just so they can be homophobic. Kids should be able to express them selves not hide themselves and be bullied with no way out.

  49. 49

I am all for gay rights but am unsure that it really needs to be talked about in school prior to 8th grade. (maybe 6th but no earlier) Let the parents handle it Ive already went over this with my daughter (11yrs old in 5th grade) and I was sure to tell her I will love her whatever her preference. Im sure we will go over this many more times.

  50. 50

Another bad idea in Tennessse -
    June 2011

    AIDS Book Banned in Tennessee

    by Cristina González

A Tennessee school board changed its library policy—it now allows school directors to remove books from library circulation on an emergency basis until reviewed by a committee. The policy change was made after a parent complained about a book containing selections from Borrowed Time: An AIDS Memoir by Paul Monette, which was available in the library of the Cheatham Middle School. At least one board member had First Amendment concerns. As for the AIDS-related book, it has been stashed in a restricted library area. Free speech, anyone?

  51. 51

agree with those that don't think sexuality should be a topic of discussion for young children in schools. but then again you know tennessee's motto "we're not alabama, but we're closer than kentucky"

  52. 52

Re: Kim K Superstar – The only thing wrong with someone here is YOU.
Have your parents eve hugged you? I think not because if they had you wouldn't be this hateful.
Being gay is nothing wrong, genetic or in life. It's a life choice, sure you are born with it but that doesn't make it wrong. Hating is wrong, not loving someone. And if they want a child they can always adopt one of the many many MANY parent less children in Africa. Just because you are in a man-woman relationship doesn't mean you have to have children. Being gay is nothing wrong just because you can't have children. Some of my families friends are gay (okay, a lot) and they are all happy with a child/ren.
But lets say Gay is a mental illness, I'd say I wish that was the only mental illness there was because most gays are the most happy, loving and nicest people you will ever met in your life. And gay guys sure knows their fashion. If gay is a mental illness it's a damn good one and you shouldn't change it because that is you and it isn't casing anyone harm. You just have to be more protected while having sex.
    BTW, I'm not gay.

  53. 53

To be on a gossip website spouting your morality seems a bit counter productive. This bill does not reflect the beliefs of ALL that live in Tennessee. I do not have these beliefs and I am from Knoxville, Tennessee. I did not vote for Stacey Campfield. My philosophy is "Live and let live". I always try to remember that many things like this "bill" evolve from fear. I do not judge but instead keep my eye on my thoughts and my actions.

The trolls keep trolling, but offer nothing. What you offer is primo red meat.

Re: AttFinch – Who voted this guy into office? His posts clearly outline his political stance. For once I can agree with you, Atticus. (Only because I do't see you using the word "bitter" ha-ha-ha) Just wish you and Miss J could separate yourselves. You post together. Back to the original issue, TN voted for this guy. The bill is STUPID but it was passed. I think the issue is larger than Campfield.

  56. 56

Re: lizmkin – I'm ashamed to say I live in TN also. I'm a baby boomer who believes that being gay is NOT wrong or a choice. People need to live and let live and take care of their own stuff. I'll bet that those with the loudest opposition to homosexuality have dark secrets of their own or in their families that are far worse than what they perceive these men & women as being. I support Gay Pride, NO H8, The Trevor Project, and anyone or anything that supports the gay communities.

  57. 57

Really? Not that this topic should be discussed in the early grades, but a law to ban it? C'mon we are knee deep in debt and unemployment stinks…Can't we spend out time on something better than this? Just goes to show how shallow minded some are!

  58. 58

Most western Christians want the sexes to be very separate, not blurred, which is often the case. Nature creates a variety of humans and anomalies exist in everyone. It may take another decade before the average person acknowledges this.

  59. 59

Re: @v@ – thanks for the nice post.

I am gay elementary school teacher. Whilst i do not agree that young children need to discuss gay issues, when kids get to about age 10/11 it does come up. Teachers need to be able to use professional discretion in these cases, as with other issues. Quite often kids name call using gay/lesbian jibes and my first question is 'do you actually know what the word means?' usually they dont. Kids need to be taught openess, respect and tolereance in general- they are curious and will ask when they get to this agem as i am sure you did!

Re: Kim K Superstar – I'M NOT YELLING #1 THE CAPS HELP ME TO SEE BETTER (GLAUCOMA). WHEN I READ STICKRATS POST (I LIKE HIM/HER COMMENTS) I HAD TO COMMENT ON YOURS K.K.SUPERTROOPER HOMOSEXUALITY IS NOT A MENTAL DISORDER, NOR IS IT "CREATED". IT'S NOT A CHOICE, YOU ARE BORN WITH DIFFERENT HORMONES THAN HETERSEXUAL CHILDREN ARE. SORRY IF IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE TO YOU MISS K. IT HARDLY MAKES SENSE TO ME AND I'M THE ONE WRITING IT!! SO FOR ALL OF YOU WHOM ARE NOT SURE WHAT THE TRUE ANSWER IS, PRAY ABOUT IT, GOD WELCOMES ALL PRAYERS FROM ALL OF HIS CHILDREN WHETHER YOU ARE BLACK, WHITE, BROWN, GREEN, PURPLE, (YOU GET THE PICTURE RIGHT? ARE YOU SURE?) SO THAT IS MY OPINION FOR TODAY. OPEN YA MIND AND THINK A BOUT IT, EH? LOVE TO ALL……!

  63. 63

Hello, psychobisexualization! We are all biologically bisexual to varying degrees, does anyone pay attention in school? Gender and gender categorization is a social construction and separate from anatomical sex. By nature, we are all bisexual however due to cultural and sociological means we inhibit this: thus making pure heterosexuality a mental illness much more than homosexuality.

  64. 64

I'm sorry but children shouldn't be taught about any type of sexuality at such a young age. This is why we have shows like teen mom and 16 and pregnant. We shouldnt be glorifying sex to babies, ANY kind of sex.

  65. 65

Re: Kim K Superstar – ALL ANIMALS THAT HAVE EVOLVED ON EARTH HAVE HOMOSEXUALITY INVOLVED IN ONE WAY OR ANOTHER. ARE YOU TELLING ME THEY ARE ALL MENTAL ILL.
