Karma Points Galore! Family Finds $45,000…And RETURNS IT!

family finds 45k and returns it

Looks like this family's conscience was working overtime!!!

Earlier this week, Salt Lake City man Josh Ferrin and family closed a deal on a new home. When Josh entered the garage, he found a hatch, climbed inside, and pulled out a metal box…which contained A LOT of money!

Here's what Ferrin had to say about it:

"I freaked out, locked it [in] my car, and called my wife to tell her she wouldn't believe what I had found."

After that, he found more boxes filled with money, and in total he discovered $40,000 in boxes and $5,000+ dollars on a table in the hatch.

More from Ferrin:

"I'm not perfect, and I wish I could say there was never any doubt in my mind. We knew we had to give it back, but it doesn't mean I didn't think about our car in need of repairs, how we would love to adopt a child and aren't able to do that right now, or fix up our outdated house that we just bought. But the money wasn't ours to keep and I don't believe you get a chance very often to do something radically honest, to do something ridiculously awesome for someone else and that is a lesson I hope to teach to my children."

Here's what Ferrin had to say about the previous owner Arnold Bangerter, who passed away and left the house to his children:

"I could imagine him in his workshop. From time to time, he would carefully bundle up $100 with twine, climb up into his attic and put it into a box to save. And he didn't do that for me."

Sure enough, Josh returned the money to its rightful owners. Here's what Kay Bangerter (one of the rightful owners) had to say about it:

"He grew up in hard times and people that survived that era didn't have anything when they came out of it unless they saved it themselves. He was a saver, not a spender. [This is] a story that will outlast our generation and probably yours as well."

And more from Ferrin:

"I'm a father, and I worry about the future for my kids. I can see him putting that money away for a rainy day and it would have been wrong of me to deny him that thing he worked on for years. I felt like I got to write a chapter in his life, a chapter he wasn't able to finish and see it through to its conclusion."

Good for you, Josh! That's certainly an extremely noble, selfless, and karmatastic thing to do, which begs this question:

Would U have done the same thing as Josh? Or would U have kept the money?

…Answer honestly! LOLz.

  2. 2

It would depend on the situation. In this case I would bring it back. good for him!

  3. 3

Wow…That just made my day! Honest people rock!

  4. 4

    oh fer christ sake……

  5. 5

Well he did the right thing… but the previous owner should have put it in the bank. He took a hell of a chance. I would have waited a while, and if no one came to claim it I would have kept it. One could argue it came with the house. Finders keepers.

  6. 6

That's a tough one but I would like to believe I would have returned it. $45 K - not enough to buy bad karma for life.

    Re: Marcus75YOW – I'm with you.

It is PRECISELY stories like this that actually make the world go ’round. Being honest, kind and HUMAN to one another IS NOT a weakness but a major STRENGTH. Something I wish more people aspired to be…..

  9. 9

In this day and age, I am afraid I'd have to keep it.

  10. 10

It makes me happy to think there are still some honest people out there. But I think I might have kept it.

  11. 11

As much as I would like to say that I would do the right thing and give it back, right now, I don't think I would. I would keep it and be debt free.

I would have to give it back. The old man worked for it and scrimped and saved for years and years, and it belongs where he would want it to go, to his son. Old people fade away, and sometimes don't get to things that they meant to. That doesn't mean you should take advantage of that, Re: Marcus75YOW – , because it might be you one day.You want to be able to look at yourself in the mirror with an untroubled mind at the end of the day.

It was honorable for sure. Legally, they bought the house and it was their money.

  14. 14

How does anyone really know if it was only 45K ?? It could of been 100K or even more. He could of decided to give some back to look as if he is a real hero and keep the rest for "a rainy day" months down the road when it won't look so obvious. Let's see how long it takes him to start remodeling the home he just bought. Do have to give him credit for returning some of it though. Not many ppl nowadays would of said anything.

  15. 15

My dad would do the same thing, he acctually did once, but not me. I would consider the money a gift from the universe to me.
