Giffords Shooter Deemed 'Mentally Incompetent' For Trial

giffords shooter declared unfit for trial

We just hope that justice ends up being served, one way or another.

Back in March, we were more than pleased to hear that Arizona shooter Jared Lee Loughner was indicted on 49 counts, including the attempted murder of congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords.

Now, we've learned that Tucson Judge Larry Burns has deemed Loughner to be "mentally incompetent" and unfit for trial, after his behavior during a hearing today.

While at the hearing, it appears that Loughner lost control, and shouted "she died in front of me" and "thank you for the freak show" while being dragged out of the courtroom. Scary.

At this point, Loughner has been deemed schizophrenic by both a psychiatrist and psychologist. He is expected to return to the Bureau of Prisons' Medical Center in Springfield, Missouri, where his mental state will continue to be evaluated for a max of four months.

While we'd like to see justice served against this awful man, we're at least glad that he'll be kept off the streets while his mental state is explored/assessed further.

Poor guy was used as a programmed government assassin.

  2. 2

In other news, 450 dangerous criminals have been let out of prison in CA due to a computer error….

  3. 3

the guy is obviously sick. when people are this mentally ill they rarely have control over there actions. he probably had no idea what he was doing. so stop being a pig perez and judging this guy so harshly. it would be a different story if he was gay. we need to have more awarness and compasion for mentally ill people. he should be in a mental hospital not a prison.

  4. 4

    He did nothing wrong

  5. 5

this is Satan's spawn .. end him permanently

I don't know about calling a paranoid schizophrenic an 'awful man' Perez. It's heartbreaking that people had to die because this kid's sickness wasn't being treated, and now his life is completely ruined too.
He needs to be in a hospital where he can't hurt himself or others.

  7. 7

This guy ain't dead yet? Electric chair puhhhleassee ASAP thank yuo in advance. 'Mentally Incompetent' ? ok now Britney's parents better change that same two words they said about her recently. "Cause ain't no hell she's just like this crazy-ass-douche-muther-f***er of a human to ever step foot on this planet!

that's pretty low of you to call someone an "awful man" when he was just diagnosed schizophrenic. This is extremely sad and unfortunate, and I would expect more from you than to be so judgmental of someone with mental problems. What's "awful" is how the mentally ill seem to slip threw the cracks of society all the time, and don't get the help they need. Something like this should be a wake up call that people need more help than what's out there and available at the moment. Shame on you.

  9. 9

While you seem to be making a lot of effort to be more tolerant and understanding of people you continue to SERIOUSLY disrespect those with mental illness. IT IS NOT A MORAL ISSUE. What he did is absolutely horrible and heartbreaking but obviously schizophrenia would not allow him to differentiate good decisions from bad ones. I've read this site for a really long time but your continuous damaging, ignorant and hurtful comments about clearly mentally ill people has become a reason to just skip it lately. Please, have a bit of awareness and compassion or at least educate yourself.

This man killed SIX people…one was a child. Mental illness may be partially responsible for his actions, but he is of NO USE to society anymore. That's harsh, but our population is big enough already. I'd like to see what all of those who justify his killing spree with mental illness would do if your loved one was killed by someone with mental illness. Would you be any less mad? Would it be any less unfair? Any more okay?

P.S. my relative has schizophrenia and has refused medical help for the last 20 years…so if you sympathize with this man's plight…wouldn't it be a violation of FREE WILL to demand hospitalization?

  11. 11

Re: Kwheezy – oh yes we should all just be like hitler and kill all the mentally ill people because they are no use to society anymore. do you know that hitler thought these same things as you. he killed anyone who was mentally ill because he thought they didnt belong and that they were second class citizens. you are dispicable. if your relative is sick btw you should hospitilize them before they do this . if someone had cared enough about this man to put him in hospital then maybe he wouldnt have done what he did. mental illness is just that an illness . should we get rid of them because they are no use to society no we should be looking out for them.

  12. 12

i hate to say i told you so but…really, is anyone surprised that he was judged incompentent to stand trial? It was obviously going to come to that in the first place.
It may seem low to some people for Perez to call somebody with obvious mental issues an evil person but think on it, thats why many people do bad things, they have mental problems which allows them to by pass the justice system .It doesn't matter what their issues are, especially his, the end result is, he opened fire on a group of people and killed 6, including a little girl and shows no remorse for it. Is till think he's faking it however, in my opinion, he knows what he's doing.

  13. 13

BEEEEECK………………..IS THAT YOU? OMG!!!!! ITS BEEEEEEEEEEEEEECK!!!!

  14. 14

    Re: blaise05
That's hilarious hah! Yes, I am just like Hitler, because I believe that someone that killed 6 people is, and never will be, fit to reenter society or be put in an institution. I am not making broad generalizations about people with mental illness, I'm stating my opinion about keeping someone that is sick enough to open fire on people alive, let alone keeping them in the mental hell that I'm sure they are in. So before we go making accusations let's remember that the person in question is in fact a murderer and that the mental illness response isn't suitable to justify him sitting in a mental health facility with people who perhaps have NOT caused themselves or society harm (much like my relative, who has not harmed himself of others). So go fuck yourself with your "looking out for them" fodder, because you obviously have no idea what you're talking about and that you would take the Hitler route is just sophomoric. I may be DESPICABLE* Daffy Duck, but I'm not implying mentally ill people on the whole are unworthy of life, I'm saying that THIS PERSON is "bad" and I would still think him no use to society if he wasn't deemed to have schizophrenia. Anyone who is even remotely aware of the legal system would also understand that OFTEN people plead insanity. So go finish high school and quit trolling.

  15. 15

[is not* and never will be]

  16. 16

Re: Kwheezy – They compared you to Hitler because you were basically suggesting eugenics in your first comment. (no use to society, population control, etc).

You may have a relative who suffers from Schizophrenia, but if you can know that this man suffers from it too, and still think he is responsible for his actions in the same way that someone who is NOT sufferning from paranoid delusions would be, then I'm sorry but you are naive about mental illness.

  17. 17

This man's actions were awful, but to call him an "awful man" is out of line. He's mentally ill and needs treatment for his illness. I don't believe he should be treated and then released - he should pay for his crime - but the court's first priority should be getting him help. Another schizophrenic man recently decapitated a woman in Spain and then carried her head around. These are clearly not the actions of people who are in their right minds.

    Re: Red Panda
I mean to discuss mental illness in this situation, not mental illness in general. And I don't think I'm wrong for thinking this man is of no use to society…I do not mean to say people in general with mental illness are of no use to society or not "worth it". And comparing me to Hitler is a little over dramatic. I'm not naive about mental illness, I'm being straight forward about someone who may or may not have an ACTUAL disease and whose crime is pretty horrific…what I venture to say is that, is it the correct thing to do to institutionalize him in a place where he may negatively interact with other patients seeking treatment and he will NEVER be in a place mentally where he will be allowed to function as a normal member of society…not because of his neurological disorder, but BECAUSE HE KILLED 6 FREAKING PEOPLE. And when I say I would feel the same way whether or not he had mental illness…that's personal opinion.
I PERSONALLY think that this man IN THIS PARTICULAR INSTANCE is a problem and there is a fine line between mental illness being a viable cause vs. misused justifications.
I also believe that to commit any heinous crime (that is not a result of self defense) shows a neurological or psycho-emotional problem…(i.e. the rapist who was abused as a child.)
I definitely do not liken myself to Hitler, that's a little crass don't you think…
    but agree to disagree.

I laugh at the people excusing or justifying his behavior due to "mental illness." If it was your daughter who was killed in the shooting, you wouldn't be feeling 'sad' for this guy and defending him for his 'mental illness.' Shame on all of you thinking it makes a difference that he is 'mentally ill'! Obviously someone who is sick enough to murder another human being has "mental issues." No matter how angry/whatever someone makes you, you never take it to that extreme. You guys are all probably mental cases yourselves.

Re: Kwheezy – 100% agreed. Finally someone decent/smart around here. It makes no difference if he was "mentally ill"!! See my above post. If that was your nine year old daughter that was killed by this lunatic, you wouldn't be feeling sorry for him or excusing his behavior. And also, I bet everyone that had this been a black guy or an immigrant, no one would excuse his behavior for being "mentally ill."

    22

And to Perez - he is awful. Anyone sick enough to do what he did is awful, so don't feel bad because you used that word to describe him. LOL @ the people feeling bad for this man for being called "awful" … I'm sure many have used harsher words to describe him!

  23. 23

Re: Kwheezy – there is no question as to wether this man is mentally ill or not. he deffinatly is. and fyi i hav a bachelor of education let alone finishing high school. i know about mentally ill people because i was one. although i didnt hurt anyone i could have. i had a chemical imbalance in my brain which caused me to be unusually aggressive. this guy may never be able to re enter society but he can teach a lot of others about mental illness. if people got help and were treated earlier on then things like this wouldnt happen. if someone had cared enough about this man to make him seek help he may never have done this. so shame on you for judging this man and shame on anyone who knows someone who is mentally ill and fails to help them.

  24. 24

    Re: blaise05
Yes, considering you cannot spell 'whether' or 'definitely' and there is SPELLCHECK on here, I'm sure your "bachelor of education" from what ever career college online courses you attended, is pure gold. I sincerely hope that you don't actually teach children or anyone for that matter, haha! And unfortunately your anecdote doesn't pertain in the slightest to this instance. And yeah, if you killed a bunch of people I would consider you a lost cause as well. Is this man's quality of life going to be great in an institution? Does he deserve a great quality of life having killed 6 innocent people? I love how you assume that a) no one tried to help him b) this "news" report on PerezHIlton.com is completely accurate and c) that this person is truly mentally ill…I didn't realize you were his biographer! Sorry, this is just getting facetious, so I'll stop haha. In summation, shame on me nothing, my argument is well founded, too bad if that offends (it's just awful when people have different opinions huh). If ever, and I hope it NEVER happens to you or anyone, your family member or friend gets killed by someone claiming mental illness or temporary insanity…then we'll talk.

  25. 25

Re: Kwheezy – who really cares about spell check for one. sorry i dont proof read what i post on a gossip website. fyi i attended waikato university in new zealand. yes if my family member was killed by anyone i would be very upset . however if they were killed by someone with a mental illness i would treat it in the same way i would if it had been an accident. it would be hard to get over but i would be understanding. i have been following this guy for a little while. i know hes mentally ill . no i dont know everything about him. no where does it mention his family so im assuming they dont care or arnt in the picture. when they do put him in a mental hospital and give him drugs he will probably start to see clearer . then he will hate himself more than anyone else can. you speak as if he had control over what he was doing. mate you dont know anything about what its like to have voices in your head. do your homework before you start talking shit about something you dont know anything about.

  26. 26

Re: Kwheezy – Yesyesyes I agree there are plenty of people who suffer mental illness thatarent going and shooting up places. Perhaps his lawyer thought up this amazing excuse. I'm sorry but I can't be sympathetic and I bet all of you would have a different view if a member of your family especially a young child was killed fuck that move this motherfucker OUT

  27. 27

Re: zooby – obviously anyone that kills has mental problems, but not everyone has delusions, as well as auditory and visual hallucinations that they may think are real. Schizophrenia goes way beyond some sort of "anger" issue. Think about that before you open your mouth again, dumb ass.

  28. 28

He's a sick, sick dude. His parents should be smacked around for not noticing this when he was young.

  29. 29

Oh, and I love Cheryl Cole. I want to marry and have sex with her hair.

  30. 30

Does this remind anyone else of the movie "Primal Fear" with Eddie Norton and Richard Gere?

  31. 31

It's society, not the individual to blame at the end of the day this wouldn't have happened if he hadn't been allowed to slip through the cracks.

  32. 32

    Re: blaise05
So…if your spelling doesn't imply that you're unable to discuss this, why do you think that because I have a different opinion than you, I must know nothing about mental illness and I don't have the credentials to be a part of the debate. I don't think anything I said was "talking shit," about a generalized population with mental illness, but rather expressing my stance on the actions of this particular person who is claiming mental illness. I consider that stating my opinion, however critical, and you don't agree with me.
    It's a difference of views…mate.
    So agree to disagree.
