Glee Creator Defends Discusses The Finale - And Season Three

We won't lie to you - we had our issues with the season finale of Glee. Don't get us wrong, there were some wonderful, memorable show moments, but if we're being honest, we felt like the whole episode was rushed, with some story lines too easily wrapped up and others left out to dry with no indication of a resolution.

That's why we were pleased to hear from Brad Falchuck, one of the creators of the show and the writer/director of the episode, who explained in more detail how the episode was constructed and why certain plots played out like they did. He reveals that the episode - which coincidentally was 20 minutes longer in the director's cut (DVD EXTRA PLEASE!!!!) - is just the starting point to next season, which he's promising will be the "best season yet." But first, the finale…

Ok, huge qualm #1 - Quinn cutting her hair. We were under the assumption going into the episode that she had some diabolical, Sue Sylvester-esque scheme to sabotage the team's chances at winning Nationals, thus setting her up to be the baddie for next season (and giving her character some development.) So…why didn't that happen? Brad suggests we were looking at it all wrong. He explains:

"[Her anger over her breakup with Finn] was all in her hair, man. It really was. All the bad juju was in her hair and she cut it all off and everything got better. It wasn’t that she got over it all but I think she’s just grown up. Every culture has a ritual like that where you make some sort of physical change and it transforms you inside too."

Ummm, okay. If you say so! (We like our scenario better.)

Brad then went on to talk about why the kids lost at Nationals, and this explanation we liked and agreed with. He explained:

"Yeah. They’re not ready yet. I think there’s something about them winning that deflates things oddly. We knew what was going to happen. It’s not even that they lost but they didn’t even make that top 10. That’s how unprepared they were. That’s how unfocused they were. I kinda liked that. To me, if they make it to the top 10 after they’re so clearly not focused, they’re clearly not invested because they all have other things going on — it would have been a little disingenuous."

Agreed! When you're traveling to a national competition and you wait to write your songs until the day before, you deserve to lose. It's like a kid getting a 200 on their SATs and saying, "But wait! I took a practice test on the way over!" Please!

While getting some clarification on the finale was great, what we found more interesting was Brad's thoughts on season three and who may or may not make it to season four. Click the jump to check out some HIGHlights from the rest of his interview to see what we mean:

It seemed like you were planting seeds of Sunshine Corazon returning to McKinley?

Unsure yet. We have some big plans for next year. It’s not worth getting into them because who knows? When we talk in September, everything I say will be different anyway. Don’t even bother. It’s a waste of time. That’s how we work. We have ideas and then we also wanna leave some room for a little discovery.

There was a lot of talk in the finale about graduating and going to New York. Does that mean this is the last season of Rachel, Finn, Kurt, etc.?

Oh, we’ll get into all that later.

Would you ever think of doing a spin-off with Rachel, Kurt, Blaine and Finn living in New York?

I don’t know. Like I said, I am basking in the glow of finishing. Talking about starting is way too soon.

But you all at least have a plan for the issue of most of the characters graduating?

Yes, we have plans definitely. This is not a willy nilly thing. We have plans for stuff and it’s gonna all be great.

So when will you start breaking stories for season 3? Have you even thought about that?

Oh, absolutely. We start at the end of June.

Can you give any kind of tease for season 3?

If I could, I would. Just know that we have some really great, big ideas. I am under the opinion it will be the best season.

Can you say, "BEST IDEA EVER?!" A spin-off starring Lea Michele, Darren Criss, Cory Monteith and Chris Colfer…all together, all in New York?!

Our hearts just stopped! Our vision is murky! All we can see is a Rachel Berry reindeer sweater making its away across Lincoln Center in December, followed close behind by a puffy vest, a Dalton Academy scarf and an Alexander McQueen-esque kilt!

Brad, don't let this be a fever dream! Make this happen! Make Berry's Boys happen! (Or, if you prefer, we also like A New Direction for a title!)

Please give that tall dancer kid and Heather a dance solo together!

  2. 2

@RdRydngHd, they had an awesome solo at regionals…?

  3. 3

Please kill them all off. That's the only thing that would make the 3rd season a success.

Okay, so if anyone actually paid attn to the finale the cast are all juniors which means that Glee has at least another yr to go… So b4 we all jump to the conclusion that Rachel, Finn, Blaine and Kurt will get a NYC spin-off let's all just see how the next yr pans out… Like everyone else I am dying for next season but I am pretty sure season 3 won't be the end, at least it will be the beginning of quite possibly the best story plots yet.

they didnt make it to the top 10 because of those stupid "original" songs. they need to stop that crap ASAP..

This episode was pretty bad. The "will they, won't they" between Finn and Rachel has never been cute and at this point, they're boring seperately and even worse together.

Half of the kids don't get a storyline and only Rachel and Finn get all the leads even though Cory can't sing (or dance) for beans and Artie/Kevin McHale and Puck/Mark Sailing are the BEST male singers on the show. And the guy's excuse for cutting Quinn's hair? All of her heartbreak is in her hair? Really? Is that like some twisted, idioic, demented take on Sampson or something? Because, honestly, it just sounds STUPID.

If there is a spinoff.. Brittana sure as hell better be in it.

Their original songs are FANTASTIC and I love them. Honestly, thats the only reason they won Regionals. Go back and watch last year's Regionals, there is no comparison. Seriously, Journey? Compared to original hits? I LOVE Journey, don't get me wrong, but their original songs are amazing. I honestly just want Blaine to transfer to McKinley so I can have some more Klaine in my life, I'm going to die without it all summer!

    What happened to Coach Beiste!?!?

Many women completely change their hair style/colour during a huge transitional shift or heavy break-up. I know I do, and well, do I really have to remind people of Britney? Women tie a lot of emotion to their hair (do I really have to remind people of Hair by Gaga) and purging that emotion by radically transforming it really is cathartic. I buy that totally. And anybody that doesn't dye their 1-2 inch long hair every other week would understand that too.

Every time I watch this show I think "why am i still watching this show?" It's terrible. The characters are all lame. The agendas of the writing staff are too blatent and Kirk is so insipid and forced every time he is on the screen I get annoyed. And why do they keep pairing up the "hot" guys with the fat girls? They try to tackle so many legit topics, but then we are reminded what a fantasy the show really is. Thank goodness this season is over. I can officially kick my Glee habit.

Quinn said that she had a plan for New York! Don't give that BS that she went all that way just to get a hair cut and then be happy again. I wanted to see Quinn's revenge!! Also, Finn doesn't need to be in the spin off, his character has been holding the show back all season. Brittney however, totally needs to be in this spin-off!

I definitely love the spin-off idea with Rachel, Kurt and Blaine! Santana and Brittany should be included too! No one dances as great as Brittany in the show and Santana has an amazing voice! Please, don't bring Finn into the spin-off, seriously he's not needed. His existence does nothing but hold Rachel back from achieving her big dreams. I'm pretty done with this Finn character. Just stay in Ohio and leave Rachel alone. Rachel deserves someone better. Finchel will not work after high school.

    I love GLEE :)
