Hangover Part II Breaks Box Office Records This Memorial Day Weekend (Obvs)

| Filed under: Film FlickersBusiness BlitzBradley CooperZach Galifianakis

So, exactly how much DID The Hangover Part II make this Memorial Day weekend??

Oh, just a mere $86.5 million for the three-day weekend, which makes the movie the highest grossing live-action comedy for a holiday weekend.

The movie beat out the original record holder, Austin Powers in Goldmember, which made $73.1 million. It's also the second-best opening for an R-rated film, topping The Passion of the Christ.

If you include the full 5-day opening from Thursday, the movie made a massive $137.6 million. The first Hangover made less than half of that amount in its first five days.

WOW!! We knew it was going to be big, but for a movie that didn't get the greatest reviews, this is really impressive.

Here are the top five box office results:

1. The Hangover Part II — $86.5 mil
2. Kung Fu Panda 2 — $48.0 mil
3. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides — $39.3 mil
4. Bridesmaids — $16.4 mil
5. Thor — $9.4 mil

So…what did U see this Memorial Day weekend??

AND….the review I have read are not very positive. Guess crap sells.

  2. 2

Re: rickraton – LOL what [ONE] 'review' are you readin.? the one thing people were bitchin about was that it was 'the same as the first one' You can never please everyone…this movie was kickass & had so much more than the first one. …The $ales don't lie..

  3. 3

The movie was a carbon copy of part one. All the reviews said the same thing. I think I read one out of 10 reviews that liked it. The similarities were just too much, I thought it bordered on ridiculous.

  4. 4

Re: K0Bb19_ – There were quite a few reviews that were bad, CNN, MSNBC, EW, I mean, did you even look on the internet? And I think we all know that sales mean nothing, Americans are morons, they will see anything.

  5. 5

All I can say is! Do not waste your time on that shit movie Pitt is in, The Trre Of Life. This was the worst movie I have sat through in looooong time! It is filled with great and beautiful post card scenery, bur th epoint of the movie was repeatedly washed down the toilet with shitty narration and a never ending NON point. The beginning was handicapped, the middle was tolerable and the ned was a fart from my ass. 2 and a half hours from my life that I can never have returned . Excuse me, I must go vomit.

Re: K0Bb19_ – Well for starters. Rolling Stone June 9 2011. Mine arrived yesterday. They gave it 2 stars which under their code equals FAIR. Only one lower. They said " Sequel no equal" " The 'hangover' follow up made my head hurt from not laughing".

  7. 7

Re: K0Bb19_ – Don't use the 'argumentum ad populum' excuse to defend whether a movie is good. Grown Ups made around 100 mil total and we know what a pos that was. There is no accounting for taste these days! That being said, there are many reviews out saying it's not very good. I've seen it and can agree that it was kinda crap.

  8. 8

And I bet they didn't have to sell the tickets at 99 cents to cheat their way to being #1.

  9. 9

too bad it SUCKED! i loved the 1st one. i knew the 2nd one wouldn't be as good but i did not think it would be THAT lame. BOOOO!

It wasn't as good as the first but it still good enough to be a successful sequel. Critics are looking for a movie that was gonna be different then the first and all these other details. People that went to see it were just trying to laugh and enjoy a movie. Doesn't mean it was crap, just means it wasn't as original as the first.

  12. 12

I went and fell alseep. Big let down.

  13. 13

HEY BALDY…when are you going to debut your new head? were you hoping that by always covering your fat dome that we would forget about your embarassing receding hairline so when you finally show us your new hairline we wont notice? too bad im not as stupid as you! hahaha lol embrace it! youve been covering your hairplug procedures since that stupid ass wig from your birthday!

  14. 14

Not surprised it made a lot of money.
The entertainment industry caters to the uneducated morons that populate the Unites States today.
Fast Five made a lot of money and that was a pile of crap.

You have to look no further than the success of Paris Hilton, the Kardashians, Jersey Shore and the Real Housewives to see that the majority of people that make up viewing audiences these days are utter morons.

  15. 15

I saw Win Win with Paul Giamatti. Great acting. Laughs. I enjoyed it. Probably would sail over the heads of Hangover fans.

  16. 16

I can't believe people would actually pay to see this shitty movie. I guess people now a days don't know what good movies are. you people seriously need help.

Re: Chicklette – Paul Giamatti was also in Hangover 2, guess he isn't too good to stoop to the level of us moron Hangover fans. snotty bitch

  18. 18

Wow! People are so harsh and critical. They're not trying to win Oscars with this movie, just entertain. I LOVED it, actually saw it twice this weekend. Both times, everybody laughed hysterically pretty much the entire movie. Oh, and I'm not an uneducated dumbass.

  19. 19

I saw The Hangover II opening day (I loveeeeed the first one) and I loved it! Wasn't as funny as the first, but still got some big laughs. The theater was packed where I was it and we all were laughing hysterically.

  20. 20

Re: ivy77 – hahaha! You are right. I am a snooty biatch :p

  21. 21

i think people who saw it in crowded theaters liked it more. will a full house, there's a lot of tension to laugh, so peolpe will laugh harder at less funny stuff. like the people who laugh at the line we've all heard 100 times on commercials, yet they laugh like it's the first time the've heard it.
didn't tink it was very funny and not surprised at the success.

  22. 22

I saw Hangover Part II and while there were a few bright moments, I was pretty much non-plussed. Not to sound prudish but honestly too much profanity and over the top drug use loses its effect. Clever dialogue and situations over profanity and drugs might have made this better. But the element of surprise is over. The first film is like Lewis and Clark going west for the first time; the sequel is just going over already cleared paths. Anyone else feel the same way?

  23. 23

Re: white_is_ugly – I think that you are the only one on here who needs help, imagine having a good time laughing at a comedy it sounds so bad we need a doctor. You should try it once in a while maybe you wont be such a hater.

  24. 24

who the hell is watching this crap?!?!!? I don't get the hype.. they must have a hella talented PR/marketing team because the first movie wasn't even remotely interesting or funny and I sure as hell won't see part 2 *GAG*

  25. 25

I really enjoyed it! I was a big fan of the first one and this one didn't disappoint… Maybe you have to go with a group of friends to truly have the ride Hangover offers.. Well i enjoyed it and i have been know for being a movie snob.

  26. 26

I saw Bridesmaids - it was really good. Don't let the dumb title fool you. This movie has heart and laughs too. I also saw Hangover 2. It was entertaining, a little crude, but what the hell did I expect. It was 2 hours well spent. Love Zach Galifinakis - he made the movie.

  27. 27

i dont know what yall are talking about it was Soooooo funny. maybe thats just my crude humor tho :)

  28. 28

i absolutly loved the first one. this one not so much. i didnt enjoy seeing all the nudity and the storyline was to much like the first one. i wanted some originality.

  29. 29

The record was held by "Bruce Almighty" not "Austin Powers". 2003 'Bruce' opened on Memorial Day weekend with $85.7

  30. 30

BTW, Why are shit head Americans obsessed with low class, low rate movies about fat middle aged guys still trying to hang on to youth, while cheating on their wives and exampling zero moral common sense. These shit movies always have the same chauvinist sense of humor and the same bullshit 18 yr old mind frame, that makes me question who main stream America must be(?) YIKES!…no wonder no one married is happy!!! Fat disrespectful men buying twat, pretty much sums it up!

  31. 31

    not bad review………..

  32. 32

i so agree with you:) !!

  33. 33

Oh come on you must be seriously miserable to not be able to laugh at this movie! It's supposed to stay true to the original because that's what's funny is they made the same mistake again…and for people who think it's inappropriate that's the point they say things that are so woaahhh that makes you laugh I loved it! I love all kinds of movies so I'm not dumb as some of you claim people who enjoy this movie are!!!

  34. 34

Re: booboo1111 – Exactly! Well said!

  36. 36

Lord, this movie sucked sooooo bad…people are idiots…they will see anything and say it's good…like rickraton said below…crap sells…and this one sold on the name value alone…What a stinker of a movie…

  37. 37

To All of the Comments putting AMERICANS down…Get the fuck out of our country if we are so bad! I'm a proud American. If people want to see a crude comedy because it makes them laugh, it's THEIR RIGHT. WE live in a free country! SNAP!

  38. Mtl23 says – reply to this

I thought the first one was way better, I would have waited for dvd if I would have know all they did was use the same jokes from the first one over again….. They could have done a lot better I only laughed a few times and it was mostly at Ken Jeong's character. He was the best part of the movie.

  39. 39

Hate to say it, but it was really boring. Loved the first Hangerover. No reparte ' with each other. I love Bradley Cooper, but he didn't bring it to this one. All he had to say was "What the Fuck" every line. Ed and Ken carried the movie as far as it went. Boring cast too. Sould went back to Vegas. The Asian cast didn't add anything funny to it. Ken saved this movie. Hope they gave him a huge cut!
