BET Not Pulling Rihanna's Video

| Filed under: TV NewsRihannaMusic MinuteWacky, Tacky & True

And rightly so.

Doesn't the PTC (Parental Television Council) have anything better to do than this? Television channels have rigorous standards that all content has to pass before it's allowed to air, and that's the exact reason BET is giving as to why it won't take Rihanna's new video down.

They also could have said any other number of reasons, including, "you're overreacting," "change the channel if you don't like it," or "listen to the lyrics and you might understand."

Here's what BET said:

A rep for BET tells us the network refuses to pull the video — explaining, BET "has a comprehensive set of standards and guidelines that are applied to all of our content. The Rihanna 'Man Down' video complied with these guidelines and was approved for air."

Finally, somebody responds to the PTC with a logical response. We doubt it'll stop their campaign, though, which is a shame, because think of all the worth-while things they could get done with all that energy and time.

Congrats on hitting the top ten on BET, Rihanna! The people have spoken!

Also, we put the video up at the top again for those who haven't seen it and want to see how "controversial" it is.

Do U think they should take it down?

That's great. Little black kids need to learn how to commit murder. Nice job BET.

  2. 2

    biased asshole.

  3. 3

Its a music video so what… If this was a movie no one would care… Did the PTC react on "For colored girls"?, did they react on really any Tyler Perry film its the same shit… PTC= Pathetic Twat Corporation

As someone who was raped, to me, this video is disturbing. It was 10 years ago and I am STILL trying to come to terms with what happened. I am all for artistic freedom but I think there should be such a thing as discretion regarding a subject as sensitive as sexual assault. When discussing something as serious as rape/sexual assault I can't help but feel extra thought and compassion should be given and I don't feel a video like this is empowering or positive in its message. Simply my opinion…

  5. 5

so..Ciara's ride video gets pulled for being "explicit" but this is ok? riiiiiiight.

the PTC has nothing better to do but OVER REACT to everything. If they want to ban the video, then they might as well ban violent movies, news stations shouldn't show any murders, and anything that is violent should be cancelled. The world isn't perfect and children can't live in a little box that says otherwise. Parents should educate their children rather than ban things.

She shot a man in the video…and the problem is???? PRetty sure there are thousands of music and other videos out there, that deal with women or men shooting other women and men. Get over and spend your time doing something more useful.

She should have been the one shot in the video. Rihanna is classless and tacky. She's a selfish bitch who doesn't think about the idiots at radio stations playing songs like this with lyrics talking about killing people and having sex where young kids are going to sing along. How right does it sound for a 12 year old girl to sing "sticks and stones may break my bones, but whips and chains excite me"?? Imagine being her parent and hearing her singing it! It's appalling to say the least! And don't tell me censoring will fix that problem. Radio stations play shitty and graphic songs like that all day long do there is NO hiding it. The entertainment industry as a whole is currently a joke anyway. And Rihanna is easily top five on that shit list!

Re: Mad Dog – Pretty sure BET isn't teaching children how to commit murder lol; you're over exaggerating. You do realize there are other videos on BET that show gun violence right? And there are other videos/pictures and news that show murder, so to say BET is teaching kids how to commit murder because rihanna just shoots someone, it kinda over exaggerating.

People just need to let things be. If you don't like it, don't look at it. No one is forcing you to watch the video or anything else you don't want to. Change the channel if you don't want to see the video on TV.. pretty simple.

Re: Bella_16 – It's not just about Rihanna shooting someone in the video.. but listen to the lyrics for Christ sake! This single should had never been released. Anyone would sound like a moron actually singing along to this song, especially kids (black, white, yellow, ANY color!) Bottom line is that Rihanna is a classLESS act for sure!

Re: Bella_16 – : I'm sorry but I feel like that is a somewhat shortsighted view of the subject matter. It might not be a terrible idea for you to take a moment and consider that certain situations require a little more care.

Re: xlotsacutenessx – You sound ridiculous. Did YOU listen to the lyrics? There is no major difference between the lyrics in this song & Aerosmiths VERY popular "Janie's got a gun" she is singing about how ashamed she is that she took her feelings & thoughs & turned them into actions. She sings from a place of regretting that she shot a man, & talks about her fear over facing the consequences of her poor actions. Here are some of the lyrics: I didn't mean to end his life
    I know it wasn't right
I can't even sleep at night
Can't get it off my mind
I need to get out of sight
Before I end up behind bars

What started out as a simple altercation
Turned into a real sticky situation
Me just thinking on the time that I'm facing
    Makes me wanna cry

Oh, & btw if a parent is letting their kid listen to the radio & isn't paying attention, or doesn't know how to switch the fucking station THEY are retarded. There are adults in this world, who like to hear adult songs. A parent should be paying attention to what their kids are listening to. I know, I'm a parent & my kids don't listen to S&M they listen to little kid music that is appropriate for their age. You sound like such an ugly person calling someone you don't personally know a "tacky selfish bitch" way to keep it classy yourself ;)

  12. 12

In movies ppl kills too.. blah

  13. 13

I've seen way worst…this video is nothing compared to the other filth that BET plays.

  14. 14

Re: Lady Amalthea – : You just called that person "retarded"…there isn't a whole lot that is "classy" about that.

  15. 15

Hell even in bohemian rhapsody there are lyrics similar to this song: Mama, just killed a man
Put a gun against his head
Pulled my trigger now he's dead
    Mama, life had just begun
But now I've gone and thrown it all away

Rihanna's song is pretty much just an extended version of that part of Queens song!
There is NOTHING wrong with her song.

  16. 16

Re: CMBords – actually I said parents who don't know how to switch the station when a song they don't want their kids to hear is on are retarded ;) & I think that is a pretty fair observation actually. You don't have to agree though.

  17. 17

Honestly the PTC messed up. They are putting more hype into a video/song that wasn't all thet great in the first place…

there's a lot going on here

given the fact that Rhianna seems to be dealing with some deep / dark issues
not only in the song / music…bit also in real life, i'd say she's well within her
rights as an artist to express herself this way

i understand how some folks would be either uneasy, or offended,
but i have to hand it to Rihanna in the sense that she's exorcising
her personal pain is a way that is not only cathartic, but also artistic

the song itself is strong, and i get the impression that she's suggesting
she killed him with her rejection, rather than actually KILLING whomever
    she's addressing in the song

as for the video, she's seems to definitely be working the controversy angle,
and it seems to be working effortlessly. so i say - good for her!

this one is a catch 22

  19. 19

i actually liked the video you guys are over fucken reacting just because she didn't become a preacher for sexual abuse you all hater now??? get the fuck over it. she choose not to do it thats her right. she doing this artistically. let her do it.

  20. 20

The lyrical content of Man Down is simple metaphoric expression of how she is putting her guard up and how much she has changed (for the worse and regrets it).

The music video has a different meaning that is completely alternated… for which is great for cinematic reasons but the fact that she had ONE abusive history, I felt that she doesn't have authority of the matter to talk about rape. It becomes personal to the point of libel/defamation (specifically Chris Brown). People might assume that he sexually assaulted her when he did not. I don't think people actually care what RIhanna has to say about issues, I think they care about what actually happened that day ultimately. She should not be a role model, ever.

  21. LeenB says – reply to this

    21

Jeez, if you're all uptight about the violence, just switch on the news and I will 100% guarantee you there are more violent images of war and death than there is in one music video. And that's real life, not even fictionalized.
I think it's funny when parents try to shelter kids from 'violence'. As if one music video by RIhanna is going to inspire millions and millions of children to gun down some man in a stop. I mean really? I think you should all be worried the examples the government are setting for the younger generation. Join the army! Celebrate a human's death! We're going to war! etc.

  22. 22

oh my god!! this is nothing worse than what you see on criminal minds or any other tv show!!! this is so stupid

  23. 23

Re: xlotsacutenessx – are you kidding?? the video and the song is beautiful. i love how she is going back to her roots. its creative and besides i think rapists should be shot anyway so i say good job. if someone raped me hell yea id shoot them. they deserve it . there was no swearing or nudity or drugs or blood and gore . there is suggested violence . why should it be censored ?? it completely fits the guide lines. rihanna is one of the most talented young singers out there today. she has good style , she is beautiful, she has a good voice and she is creative. she not a bleach blonde copy cat who sings over computerised pop.Re: xoxo_anonymous – and ciaras video was disgusting. it was gross. she was grinding the floor, wearing barely anything and swearing her head of"fuck me fuck me" over and over again. rihanna may sing about sexual things but she dosent take of all her clothes and swear her head of. she actually has class. grow up and look at the facts. actually compare the two videos side by side. rapists deserve to die and ciara is a slut.

  24. 24

Re: Lady Amalthea – couldn't agree more…went to my sister's dance recital and 6 year old's were dancing to "he had it comin" from chicago (the musical) and it was no big deal…but if it rhianna/gaga/britney/whoeverissuperfamousatthetime it all hell to the no… seriously people get over yourselves and go take some antidepressants while talking to your kids about their drug problem.

  25. 25

like the video- and the song is great. Not sure I see what the fuss is about maybe PTC is losing steam.

  26. 26

Re: CMBords – so you were raped and you dont want to shoot the guy?? someone just tried to rape me and i wanted to shoot them. wouldnt you want to stop them so they couldnt do it to anyone else again. just saying. i applaud rihanna for this. she is a strong women and she is holding her head high. i love how she is expressing her pain through music. she is a fantastic artist. at least shes producing something positive from her experience. maybe he raped her and maybe he didnt. shes obviously been hurt and shes doing something about it. better than sitting around doing nothing and getting deppressed and besides rapists deserve to die anyway. anyone who killed a rapist would be doing the world a favour. because once a rapist always a rapist . you could actually be saving a young girl by killing a rapist. maybe even more than one. Re: xlotsacutenessx

  27. 27

Re: Mad Dog – and its not teaching them to murder. its teaching them to save someone by ridding the world of a rapist who could hurt someone if they didnt.

Perez: "Violence is never the answer"
Perez: "Rhiannon shooting someone is perfectly fine for little kids to watch"

You fucking moron and fucking hypocrite

  30. 30

Didn't BET air the Tip Drill video? "A comprehensive set of standards and guidelines that are applied to all of our content", don't make me laugh.

  31. 31

    Meh..

  32. 32

Re: PerezTheHypocrite – Are you some kind of a moron?

Real violence is not the answer, violence on TV isn't real genius. Where's the hypocrisy? I don't think giving everyone a CocaCola is the answer to the world's problems, but I'm not going to get angry when I see a commercial of Coke making the world taste better.

If you have a brain somewhere in your skull, I highly suggest you return it and get a refund.
