Federal Reserve Bank Of Richmond, VA Shows Their Pride!

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayInspirationLGBT

Awesome! We think more banks should do the same!

The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, Virginia is showing its support for the LGBT community throughout the month of June by flying a rainbow flag.

Obviously, we could not be more thrilled, but others, such as a Republican Virginia Delegate Bob Marshall and pastor Bishop Gerald O. Glenn are making a big stink about it.

Fortunately, there also seems to be a lot of support for the show of pride.

Check out the video above to see the flag flying in all it's glory as well as hear the opposing view points conflicting over the bank's decision.

Do U think it's okay for the bank to fly a gay pride flag during June, the nationally recognized gay pride month?

If they're flying an American flag, then they're got ALL Americans covered. This just looks tacky, IMO.

  2. 2

I bet most people either don't notice it or don't know what it is for.

  3. 3

Gays DO NOT OWN THE RAINBOW…….we all enjoy the rainbow without it meaning we love gays……really disgusting how you take something God made and turn it into a statement for gays….like you couldn't make up your own flag colors?

  4. 4

This is wrong. The government shouldn't be pushing the gay agenda.

  5. 5

I think is good they supporting the LGBT community…. I don't understand why this angers so many people tho… all this discrimination is sickening… and so what if the flag is a rainbow… people are very ridiculous sometimes, they don't even know what to argue anymore.

Re: Mad Dog – The bank is not a government bank.

  7. 7

    Maybe it's a sperm bank.

  8. 8

Are they giving away a fruit basket to people who open a new account?

  9. 9

I can't believe people get so bent out of shape by a rainbow flag. Get over it, bigots.

    Re: justtfax
I live in RIchmond, and we noticed it - it's getting quite a bit of attention. Not all positive, either.

  11. 11

Awesome! We need more of this! Will never understand why this would anger to a point to make a complaint.

Re: 1finnRe: justtfax – it is still run by the people for the people…..most who do not promote gayness.

  15. 15

Re: bwilliams – it is something from NATURE that everyone enjoys and the gays have chosen to use it as a symbol…

    stupid gay man!

  16. 16

The only flags that should be flown at government buildings is the stars and stripes and POW flag.

  17. 17

There are much worse things to be complaining about in this world than a private company showing its support for a significant section of the population who are being harassed and denied their human rights every day. I am constantly baffled by the small-mindedness, intolerance and just sheer ignorance that is shown towards homosexuality.
In 50 years people will look back on the treatment of gay people and be just as horrified as we are about the widespread racism 50 years ago, and I'm ashamed. I'm glad to know that they'll at least see gestures like this. This flag is great, and the hatred needs to stop.

I'm from Richmond, VA… and I can tell you that no one I know is upset about this….. soooo as Conservative as Virginia traditionally is… I'm proud that people are not making such a big deal out of it.

being from va, i am really surprised they are being so progressive, but it is richmond. im really proud they are being so supportive and forward thinking. it sickens me that people are so outraged, its just a freaking flag, literally a piece of cloth, how is it hurting anyone? Re: Mad Dog – no, they shouldnt push it, but they should support it, like they support straights. Re: Eskimo_baby – the reality is that all americans are not covered and people need to be reminded of that.

Re: Team Kim Richards – What part of private institution do you not get?

  22. 22

Re: Team Kim Richards – wow. you really have a thing for the rainbow. are you suggesting that the lgbt community create brand new colors entirely? like dark flang or light slurpletan? there are only so many colors in the rainbow, which, judging by your creepy obsession, im sure youre aware of. you clearly have an ignorant hatred toward homosexuality based on your comments, so im sure whatever colors or symbol they used, youd have is issue with. and ps- i attended the national equality march and right before it started a giant rainbow appeared in the clear blue sky. so they may not own the rainbow but i think god just may be cool with their use of it.

  23. 23

The U.S. flag covers everyone. Our country is supposed to be "United" not divided. Why the necessity for more divisiveness?

  24. 24

jee us gays have bank accounts too. Get over it!

  25. 25

The FEDERAL Reserve Bank is not a private business…it is a government entity. The bank should not fly anything that supports a specific group or cause…it should only fly the American flag & state flag of VA. Let private businesses or individuals fly whatever flag they want…they pay for it then they can fly it.

  26. 26

I think it's wonderful! Only a Republikkkan would have a problem with equality. If republikkkans had it their way, African Americans would still be slaves, Hispanics would be still working though the Bracero program, women wouldn't be voting, and only white, male property owners would be electing the President. I swear to God, they are so out of touch with America it's fucking ridiculous.

  27. 27

Re: kfoxx30 – Try again, despite it's name the Federal Reserve Banks are not government institutions. They are privately held companies. All you'll need to do is look up the Federal Reserve System and find out for yourself if you don't believe me.

Also, the Richmond FR Bank's own website says this:
"Are Federal Reserve Bank employees considered government employees?
No. Employees of the Federal Reserve Banks are not government employees. They are paid as part of the expenses of their employing Reserve Bank. "

The employees are not gov employees, cause the bank isn't a gov bank. Though they don't explicitly say this on their site. You could always call them up and ask. their # is on the site.

Thirdly, if the Boy Scouts of America can openly support their policy of not allowing gays to be involved, why can't a private entity such as this bank openly support gay rights?

PS posting on this site does not in any way indicate that I like Perez Hilton as a person.

  28. 28

Re: Team Kim Richards – 1. not gay just not ignorant to the fact that many flags have something from nature on them.
    2. It's not really a rainbow as it is the ROYGBIV color scale that many of us learned back in grade school. A rainbow is an arch and I'm pretty sure there's a pot of gold somewhere around it.
    3. You never answered my questions about the stars and the maple leaf. Should I, as an American, get pissed that other people are looking at the stars? Or should other people get pissed that we so surreptitiously put those stars on our flag when no one else was looking?

  29. 29

Is that priest kidding me?! At a time BLACK PEOPLE werent considered equal either buddy…doesnt mean it was ever right! EQUALITY FOR ALL!!!

  30. 30

THAT'S MY CITY!!!!!!!! I live in Richmond!!!!!!!!

But anyways, although i'm politically Conservative, I don't really see the flag causing a big issue. I mean, if it's going to cause an issue anywhere, it would be for their own employees who may get singled out based upon their belief system, and their own feelings regarding the flag. But other than that, it's not that big of a deal, at least to me personally. I mean, as long as they're not one of those companies that makes people say "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas", I have no reason to complain. On the other hand, if they are one of those companies that bans the word "Chistmas", then that would be very hypocritical of them to break through this social issue, and not that one.

Re: jeanmarie – Oh my God, I just saw your profile- you live in Midlothian?! Me too! Well, scratch that- right now I live in the Forest Hill area, but I grew up in Midlothian. My mom still lives in there (same with my fiance's), and I work there, as well. What a small world!

  32. 32

Re: kfoxx30 – I'm sure you wouldn't be opposed to them having posters up in their building for Black History Month, would you?

  33. 33

Re: PlayingTheAngel – Midlothian?!? Why is there a Midlothian in Virginia? I live in the REAL Midlothian. Silly Americans stealing our names…

  40. 40

Why on earth should more banks do this? This is ridiculously stupid. WE ARE ALL AMERICANS! Why do gay people feel the need to ALWAYS be singled out and specialized? Should the banks also start flying all the flags of other countries as well to represent those communities? This just makes no damn sense.

Although I don't have a problem with this, it does raise controversy. It reminds me of what happened at my high school when the diversity club decided to post a rainbow flag at our main staircase. A student protested it and decided to start his own club that posted a flag near the rainbow flag with a big 't' to represent tolerance. Diversity club decided to lash out at this student because they said the 't' was actually a cross so they believed it was used as a mean to promote Christianity while the other student said the rainbow flag promoted homosexuality. Moral of that story is either you ban all flags except the American flag because the interpretation can be misconstrued, or you allow all flags to fly. That's the way I see it.

  42. 42

This isn't pushing any agendas or anything. It is a PRIVATE bank promoting inclusion for all. Anyone who thinks otherwise is a bigot. Its just a flag!

  43. 43

Somebody better tell that evil pastor Bishop Gerald O. Glenn to shut up or pay up.. meaning TAXES! All these religious fundamentalist that want a piece of politics better pay their share in taxes. THIS IS SUPPOSED TO BE A SECULAR NATION, NOT A CHRISTIAN ONE!!!
