Gabrielle Union Defends Rihanna's Man Down Video

| Filed under: RihannaMusic MinuteSad Sad

Rihanna's been getting a lot of backlash from people since she released her Man Down video. Yeah, we get that it is controversial, but we still maintain that there is a larger message attached to the vid's graphic "murder" scene that a lot people are getting.

Someone who does get it is actress Gabrielle Union. In a slew of very personal tweets, Gabrielle revealed how as a survivor of rape, she understood the message RiRi was trying to convey with her video and also revealed that she actually tried to shoot her own rapist in the most horrific moment of her life. She confessed to her followers:

"Saw ‘Man Down’ by @rihanna. Every victim/survivor of rape is unique, including how they THINK they’d like justice 2 be handed out.

Stranger who robbed the store I worked at. He put his gun dwn durin the rape & asked me 2 [hand] it 2 him.

During my rape I tried 2 shoot my rapist, bt I missed. Over the yrs I realized tht killin my rapist would've added insult 2 injury. The DESIRE 2 kill someone whose abused/raped u is understandable, bt unless its self defense n the moment 2 save ur life, just ADDS 2 ur troubles #mandown."

Wow. Such an awful thing to have lived through. But, thankfully, she did live through it and now she does such wonderful, empowering work with rape crisis centers in this country. Really inspiring.

And see, there is the true message of the video:

Rise above the horror that has happened in your life, don't sink down to it. Words to live by.

this video is beautiful and artistic. i dont see the problem with killing a rapist anyways. rapists should all be shot. i say good job. well done on an amazing video and standing up for yourself and for shooting a rapist because he deserved it.

Well spoken Gabbie, because what ppl fail to realize the vid didnt say "Go kill ppl". What she was doing is showing what MIllions of young women and even men go throught when they've been raped. Some comitt suicide, some turn mentally ill, some pretend it never happened and others like in rihanna's vid seek retaliation in an attempt to feel better. I think those fools making a big deal over the deal are dumb and bigoted, not once in the lyrics did she say "go kill him, it's the right thing to do". Besides i love rir going back to her reggae west Indies roots and not all corny pop music :)

I seriously do not get why people are so mad about this video…It was really well done and it's not over the top violent and brutal compared to past videos by Eminem, Nine Inch Nails and Madonna (Stan, What It Feels Like For A Girl)…This video hinted at what happened but never explicitly and the song itself is about the overwhelming burden of regret that comes with killing someone, but in the video she obviously reacted in a natural way…I'm sure most rape victims would love the have that ultimate revenge…It's a fantasy and Rihanna is an artist, she can do what she wants. She owes no one an apology or explanation. Like she said, this is for her fans…no one else.

Re: vengance – Um…you have ADD. On this website it takes a few minutes for comments to upload…You really need the satisfaction of seeing your own comment before you can move on to another story? I bet you come back and check to see if people replied so you can pick an internet fight…You're lame.

Re: vengance – How is that attempted murder? That would be considered self defense if she tried to shoot the man that was attacking and raping her.

I seriously don't understand what the huge fuss is about over the video. It's obvious she's not trying to justify shooting people.

Re: vengance – attempted murder? she tried to shoot the guy while he was raping her. it was self defense and even if she had done it after it still would have been provocation.

Re: vengance – I usually ignore most comments but as a rape victim myself, it is impossible to ignore this.

6 years after an "acquaintance rape" I still have nightmares and horrible thoughts. It saddens me that lucky, unsympathetic people can not and will not ever understand the irreversible effects rape does to a person. A part of me died that day.

The worst part is that I have been too embarrassed about the experience to talk about it over the years. Consider that… I, the victim, was/am embarrassed about being raped. The rapist walks around to this day thinking nothing of the event while I am irrevocably damaged because of it.

i implore you to talk to a person that has been raped and try to understand why the video depicts retaliation. I do not wish harm upon my rapist but I support the video for showcasing the desire for revenge rape victims feel

Re: T.E.A.M.J.O.L.I.E – Thats the problem, it's one person's word against another. Also I have a feeling you don't think female rapist like Debra Lefave or Amy Louise Sword (woman who raped her son) should be shot..just male rapist. look up falserape and you will see a trove of cases that are not covered in the mainstream media. My point being who's to say that a woman would kill a man who didn't want to date her and then she claims rape to cover it up. Having said that if you still think rapist should be shot then I think women who lie about rape should also be shot.

Re: tearaivu – a lot of the time women do lie about it but so do men . however i dont think lying about rape and actually raping someone are the same thing.raping someone is a much bigger offense and deserves the death penalty. i only refer to male rapists because it is almost impossible for a women to be a rapist . the fact is that it is impossible for a women to be a sexual sadist , they just dont have that gene. its phycology 101. and it would be really hard to have sex with a man who couldnt get it up if you know what i mean so the man actually has to have some part it in. he has to be aroused in the first place. thats why i find it so hard to believe that a women could rape a man. its actually physically impossible. whats more women and men who lie about rape are deplorable and should do jail time. i know someone who told the court that her grandfather raped her. i told the court otherwise. unfortunalty her friends stood up for her even though she told them it wasnt true and he ended up going to prison for it so i definitely understand where your coming from there.
