Whoa! Women Stretching Their Necks With Brace Rings!

| Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & True

This is unbelievable! The end result is so … off-putting.

You may have never heard of the Padaung women of Africa and Asia, but there are still tribes of these proud women living in refugee camps across the sea. These women have been run out of their homes for strongly believing in the ritual of neck rings, coiled metal placed around a woman's neck at an early age. Though at first it might seem merely like decoration, the ritual is continued throughout the woman's life so that by the time she is an adult, her neck has been elongated a considerable amount. Though there have yet to be any proven health concerns with the practice, the imagery is really quite jarring and the process itself is rather painful.

Check out the video (above) to see a few girls who have just received their coils - and some who have had them for over 20 years!

It's really something to see!

Must be a slow celeb news day. Hey dipshit, did you just find out this culture exists?! Where the fuck have you been?! Under a rock?!

  2. 2

It's actually been proven to be very dangerous!
The women wear the rings and if their husbands or other males want to do away with them they simply remove the rings. It leaves the women unable to hold their heads up on their own which can result in them not being able to keep their air way useable.

Whoever bought this site and is now ghost writing on it is a fucking moron. I watched this episode of Taboo on NatGeo and in no way is this a painful think like you said. It's actually a tribal honor and women who remove them temporarily for different reasons feel naked without them. They are not run out of their villiage, as this is tradition. Damn, this fucking site sucks ass.

  4. 4

Yeah perez, this has been going on for a lot longer than today.. Jesus christ..

  5. 5

This was on Ripley's Believe it or Not with Dean Kane like 100 years ago.

  6. 6

Their necks don't get longer! The weight of the collar makes erodes the collar-bone down, and it just looks like the neck is longer.

  7. 7

I don't understand culture/religious beliefs when it causes people to do things that may harm them or even their children who are too young to understand. No wonder why the military took this over and banned the practise. Its verging on child abuse

their necks don't actually get longer…..it's the shoulders that are pushed down giving the longer looking neck effect.

Off-putting? Really? What do you think they think when they look at you and your freak outfits and hair? Anyone who watches news other than ET or Insider (like you) has learned about these women. Grow up Perez. Accept people who are different. I bet if GaGa walked in with those rings around her neck you'd love it. Hypocrite.

  10. 10

This is a traditional, honorable form of modifying and transforming their bodies. All we've come up with is plastic surgery!

  11. 11

Wow you really have to get your head out of cacas ass, this was featured on natgeo a while ago but most people have known about this since forever.

  12. 12

    Insane.

  13. 13

They aren't stretching their necks, they are pushing down the clavicle which gives them an appearance of a longer neck. The further they can push those bones down, the long their neck will appear. Painful.

  14. 14

Hey, you pretend to be all about pop culture and shit, Jessica Simpson showed these women at one episode of The Price of Beauty and they talked about the process and what makes their neck look elongated, it is actually their shoulders that get pushed down and they consider it an honor to have it. Also they are not forced to get the rings around their necks… They do it because they want to.

  15. 15

so if they remove the rings, what happens? do their heads just fall over or are they able to support the weight of their heads without the rings?

  16. 16

Okay, do you know how many YEARS ago it was that I saw this on Nat Geo???…. several. People say that you're late with your news. But damn, you're REALLY late this time. Maybe you need to cut off that x Factor and shitty music for once so you can watch some good, educational television that is also entertaining!!!

  17. 17

Did you just found out about this NOW??? Where the f-ck have you been living for YOUR WHOLE life???? I'm 27 and i've known about this since i can remember…. Dont you ever read or watch TV?? You know, there are more magazines other than OK! and there are other tv show other that E.T… You talking about it like it's just been discovered makes you look like the dumbest half-wit in the planet

Re: peoplerstoop – Thats actually not true. Since they are not stretching there neck and the braces are not that tight, the neck can fully support the head. Later in the show they showed a woman who had removed them and was just fine.

  19. 19

It doesn't actually make their neck longer. It just pushes down their shoulders. I do worse things to my feet.

    20

Um yea…this has been going on for centuries in a few different cultures as all so why the revelation from you now?

  21. 21

It's forbidden but it's traditional there - nothing new - we here in good old Europe knew about this for over 30 yrs.

  22. 22

    Human stupidity has no limits.

  23. 23

So this is offputting, but the fact that women here wear high heels which are terrible for feet is just normal? Criticize your own culture before you criticize someone else's.

    24

Seriously? Is your world so one sighted with pop culture that you do not educate yourself with anything else? At 30 years old you are only now learning of this group of people? They are on the cover of Smithsonian and National Geographic, as well as other publications and news sources, frequently. You are plain ignorant.

Re: alysissa98 – Great point! Heels often horribly deform women's feet yet they continue to do it to be appealing and beautiful. The result is pain, deformation and often times foot disorders later in life.
    .
    Do we judge them? Nope.

  26. 26

Re: peoplerstoop – did you watch the video during which they removed the rings and their neck did not collapse?

  27. 27

Why don't you open a book or periodical once in a while?

  28. 28

Their necks don;t actually elongate…their collarbones get pushed down creating this illusion.
