Main Man Records Responds To Joan Jett And Cherie Currie Lawsuit!

| Filed under: Music MinuteLegal Matters

They're gonna put up a fight!

In light of Joan Jett and Cherie Currie's lawsuit against Main Man Records for attempting to release a tribute album in homage to their band, The Runaways, called Take It Or Leave It: A Tribute to the Queens of Noise, without their permission, the record label has responded, claiming that the recording was made "with the best of intentions," and the proceeds were to raise funds for cancer research!

Furthermore, the label has yet to receive a copy of the suit, but plans to fight it when it comes.

Frankly, regardless of what the intentions were, if they don't have their permission, we don't see what makes them think it's okay to put this out!

What do U think?? Should this album get released?

You STILL have to get permission whether or not it's for charity. The original artists get to decide if they want their tunes used for that purpose or not. Unbelievable. You can't just help yourself to another's tunes. They're protected by law.

It's Joan Jett and the Runaway's works. Only they should have the right to authorize their songs to be used.

It might be a great idea if I copied Perez's blog posts onto a site of my own and announced I was giving all my blog's revenues to charity… but it'd still be wrong. And it does seem odd that this particular concern proceeded this way. To get that far in the production process without paying any mind to copyright law? Makes the whole charity angle seem somewhat suspicious.
In any event– two of the most beautiful, talented women in the world, up there in that pic.

ALL artists should have final SAY re: their product being released, sold, packaged, whatever, the FINAL say, or approval, that is ..SHOULD be Theirs

I Luv R N Roll it to em Joan

Oh, for God's sakes! Who writes this crap? Go read any of the zillion stories out there about this, and get the story right. The lawsuit isn't about the use of the music. The album is a collection of cover versions of Runaways' songs, and nobody stole anything. Anyone can release of cover of any song that has already been released. All they need is the licenses to do it, and Main Man has all of those. The music rights are bought and paid for already. All of the songs are being used legally.

What Jett and Curie are suing for is the use of their likenesses to promote the album without their permission. Basically, Jett and Curie think that Main Man should pay them to use their faces…to sell an album that is a tribute to them! What Jett and Curie are doing is totally shady, and it's all about getting some of the profits.

By the way, the money is going to a charity for cancer research in memory of Sandy West, the Runaways' drummer who died of lung cancer in 2006.

So, it's Jett and Curie who are doing something shady here. They're already going to get paid royalties for the songs. They're just trying to get more money out of the deal. Next time, spend 10 seconds doing a little research and get the story straight.

Re: Ironsides – You got it…I doubt they own any of "their" songs anyway. Still love me some Cherry Bomb

    Re: Mark

Joan happens to own many of her Runways songs.

Re: Ironsides – Thanks for some facts, Ironsides. So the survivors are trying to increase the deceased drummer's financial charitable legacy? Why on earth wouldn't they seek the survivors and actual Runaways bandmates permission and cooperation? It still sounds shady to me. The band is still alive. It's their stuff. I wonder how a court will rule on it all.

First of all ironsides is dead nuts on…….. Main Man did do everything legally by buyiing mechanical licences…….Do you realize that Joan Jett has a minimuim of at least 2 covers on all her records and one album is nothing but cover(someone eles songs)….she did not seek permission from anyone to record them. She simply bought the licences, or I should say Blackheart records did.
Really………..BHR needs to do the right thing! Absolutely appalling, I guess image is not important to BHR, Joan or Cherrie. It is of course a tribute album with proceeds going to cancer research in honor of Sandy. By the way if you research it further there was a statement released by the charity varifing the intent.

Re: Slick0614 – This is NOT about Joan Jett or Cherie Currie but least of all Blackheart records. If Kenny Laguna (poor excuse for a human) their manager, was producing the album on Blackhearts Label and he was making the money he wouldnt care what the album was. It's all about money. Joan, Kenny and Cherie didnt dedicate their Runaways Movie To Sandy or even state that she had died at the end of the movie. This is a tribute album with proceeds going to Cancer research in the name of Sandy West, what's the problem?
