missy elliot explains why shes been mia

What an inspiration!

Back in May, we heard that Missy Elliot would be the focus of the June 29th season premiere episode of VH1's Behind the Music.

Here's what the show's executive producer Brad Abramson said about it at the time:

"Missy was great and very candid. She talked for the first time about her [near fatal bout with] Graves disease, which she’s been battling for the last few years, and spoke in detail about the sexual abuse she experienced as a child."

Now, Missy has opened up further about her battle with the autoimmune disease Graves, and why she's been pretty much MIA for the past few years.

Here's what she had to say about it:

"You live with it the rest of your life. I couldn't write because my nervous system was so bad. I couldn't even use a pen."

Despite her health problems, Missy has said that she's lost 30 lbs and is currently working in the studio with Timbaland!

We're so proud and impressed with your strength and perseverance, Missy! We CANNOT wait to hear your new music, and we'll def check out your Behind the Music episode on the 29th!

If Missy REALLY REALLY comes back, im gonna need nicki minaj to shut her mouth for a while.

  5. 5

If Im not mistaken if she had Graves she would be alot thinner! It has to do with the thyroid it makes your thyroid over active. Hoshimotos slows down the thyroid.

MISSY! Aw, I love her and was wondering what ever happened to her. Glad to see her back.

I have Graves Disease and I didn't lose any weight, I actually gained 40 pounds! So not everyone has weight loss as a symptom.

I also have Graves so I'm looking forward to seeing that and getting the word out about this horrible disease that nobody knows about

Damn I thought it was Star Jones. I had to go check google to see if I was remembering the right missy elliot.

aw i didn't know she had graves disease! i developed it years ago because of an allergic reaction to an antibiotic… it's a horrible disease, and requires sooo much time on medication to help even out your thyroid. no wonder she's been away!

Missy in an amazing producer/singer. She is the total bomb! Hope she is able to get back into the music thang and continue to create ground-breaking music.

And to all of you morons who are unable to focus on anything but appearances

    Re: rocrmom94

First of all there is more than one form of Graves disease. Second of all, if your not a doctor and you don't know what your talking about you shouldn't leave comments on someone else's health. How rude, inconsiderate, and completely ignorant of you. Graves disease is a chronic auto immune disease that my father suffers from. YES! Men can have Graves disease too (another huge Graves disease misconception). He has the kind that his Thyroid was overacting and was loosing muscle mass in his legs to the point where he couldn't walk. Again, how dare you judge or insinuate she's not really sick. Please think before you type next time-

I got nothing but love for Missy, a truly hard worker with god given talent. I wish her all the best, she deserves nothing less!

Re: iHateRudePeople999 – Amazing isn't it? If a person doesn't 'look sick' people assume they aren't sick. It's the biggest pet peeve of those who suffer from auto-immune diseases. I have two of them and I'd dearly love to slap the grins off those who judge health by appearance. Best to your Dad 999. :]

Just proves when your hormones are out of wack you can become extremely sick and the rules do not apply to everyone! I had hashi and couldn't pick up a pen either. Weight gain is the LEAST of our problems with thyroid disease~!!!!
