Adam Duritz Claims He's 'Less Crazy' And Is Weaning Off His Meds

We're hoping that you've gotten a doctor's opinion on this move, Adam!
Counting Crows' Adam Duritz claims that he suffers from a "severe mental illness," but he's saying that he's less crazy now and doesn't feel he needs his medication any longer.
Here's what he had to say about on his Facebook page:
"I was f**king crazy. I needed meds. I took meds. Now I'm less crazy. I need less meds. I'm stopping meds."
"Gotta keep pushing/get off this sh*t. Going faster than I should but it still takes too long."
And here's what Adam said about his condition back in 2008:
"I have a form of dissociative disorder that makes the world seem like it’s not real, as if things aren’t taking place. It’s hard to explain, but you feel untethered."
According to Adam, he's been taking Lithium, but he's now cut his dosage in half, which has caused "vicious withdrawal symptoms."
As long as he's gotten a doctor's approval, we think it's great that he wants to cut back on his medication. Lithium is powerful stuff!
Good luck, Adam!

As the social worker in a state psychiatric hospital I feel like it's my duty to discourage anyone from going this route. if you've been diagnosed with a condition such as a dissociative disorder, it's neccessary to keep your meds going, and not taper them off "too fast." When done correctly, coming off of medication DOES NOT cause "vicious withdrawal symptoms." Accept the problem in order to fix it.
This sounds horrible. Wishing only the best for Adam.
Granted, he's a horrendous-looking hack but he should really take his medication nonetheless. The only reason he's "not crazy anymore" is because he's on medication, it's not as though disassociative disorder is something you can treat with behavioral therapy or "cure". People with mental illnesses think they can go off meds all the time and usually they take a nosedive afterwards.
Dr. Drew & his 12-Step religious cult co-conspirators are FOAMING-AT-THE-MOUTHS right about now; another victim for their show…..
Hi Adam. Let's think about this logic - if you were a diabetic, would you stop taking your insulin or eat six or seven of those giant pixie sticks just because you felt fine?
Guess what Adam? You will soon be f###ing crazy again. Perez, it's "weaning", not "weening".
Yeah … the side effect of taking your drugs as prescribed is that you FEEL BETTER … the danger of trying to ween yourself off of anti-psychotic medications is that you won't realize you feel WORSE and ARE NOT INDEED BETTER is another trip to the psych ward.
Mental illness is MK Ultra mind control programming.
and this is exactly how people with mental disorders relapse into a mental break down again. He's feeling fine BECAUSE of the medication he's on. Hopefully he has someone who will help him out incase something bad does happen.
Re: TORTEZ – Please go to Vigilant Citizen. Don't say that about mental illnesses, is irresponsible and unfair for non-celebrities!
Maybe with him off all those brain-frying meds he'll be able to get back to writing good songs….
This isn't a good idea. He needs to take his meds and consult his dr. or get a new dr. He needs help. Bless his heart.
Just to clarify Lithium is not an antipsychotic it is a mood stabilizer/anti-depressant, but RubyT is right it is extrenely dangerous to go off medications for bi-polar disorder or any other mental illness. As mentioned earlier the side effect of this medication is that you do feel better, and often this is the reason people who have a mental disease are non compliant after a while, as they feel so good that they think they are not "crazy". Being someone who works in mental health I am consistently disappointed in people who are in the public spotlight and encourage this type of behaviour, as they are setting a very dangerous example for people who look up to them.
Fuck lithium! I don't blame him for going off of it one bit. It wrecks your creativity, fries your hair, makes you thirsty, can damage your kidneys and is either ineffective or toxic (its therapeutic dose is a p. narrow range) and makes you put on weight. I took that stuff for 18 months and it was horrible. I never knew it was used for a dissociative disorders, however, I only thought it was used for bipolar/mania.
