Why Hasn't Spike Lee Made Any Movies Lately?

spike lee on why he hasnt made movies lately

Such a shame!

Last we heard about Spike Lee's big screen endeavors, he was planning to direct a movie about MJ's death called Brooklyn Loves You, Michael Jackson. That was all the way back in April '10 though, and we haven't really heard updates on that project since!

Now, Spike has opened up why he's been MIA from the big screen since 2008's Miracle at St. Anna. Here's what he had to say about it:

"I haven’t made a feature film in three years."

"Inside Man was my most successful film, but we can’t get the sequel made. And one thing Hollywood does well is sequels. The film’s not getting made. We tried many times. It’s not going to happen."

"First of all, what in this world does not revolve around money? But money is a big part of film, unlike a lot of other art forms."

This is kind of sad to hear! It would be one thing if Spike just hadn't been inspired lately, or if he'd been truly passionate about pursuing TV projects, but we're bummed to hear that he hasn't been making features because nobody will give him the $$$.

Come on, Hollywood! Don't you remember Do The Right Thing? This guy is capable of greatness! Let's give him some more opportunities.

Would U like to see more movies by Spike Lee?

other than 'inside man', his movies suck ass!! THE WORST! & no it's not because he's a racist little shit brain, it's because they suck ass, horrible, the worst

  2. 2

His best work in feature films was way back in the 1990s, and stopped with Do the Right Thing. He is best at documentaries . . .

  3. 3

Because the world has seen that he is truly a racist pig!

  4. 4

Oh, I thought he hasn't made a movie because his movies SUCK!

Yeah, but even "Inside Man" had to get into the race thing. No Spike Lee film is immune to it, even one's that are supposed to be about bank robberies. Maybe Hollywood is just tired of that? "Inside Man" had a totally superfluous scene where the Shihk guy is complaining to the investigators that he was mistakenly perceived as Arab and had his turban pulled off his head, which violates his religion. There was also the scene where Denzel is chatting with the white NYC cop who's relaying a story about how he once had a gun pointed to his head by a "spic" kid, and Denzel chastises him for using that term. Then there's the scene where the black boy is playing a really violent video game where black thugs are supposed to be out there shooting, stealing and beating up prostitutes, and there's subtle preaching there too about the way blacks are being portrayed and the message being sent to impressionable black youths. None of those scenes were necessary for the main plot, that was just Spike Lee being Spke Lee, using his movie as a platform for sidebar messages, because it's his movie and he can. The whole movie has little bits of racial preaching inserted in wherever possible, including the main plot, which involves nefarious WWII dealings with Nazis and stealing jewelry from the Jews……though I still enjoyed the movie.

low life racist. wont miss his work

Spike Lee is a racist, plain and simple. He hates white people. I have spoken to an actress that played a minor part in one of his movies. Spike doesn't hold back about how he feels about white people and everything he believes happens due to the fight between whites and blacks. In this day and age you can't act like this Spike, take a clue and this is why your movies won't get made.

What's funny is that Spike kind of selectively picks and chooses who to focus the racism claims on. In "Inside Man" over and over again it was "whitey" being blamed for things. Whitey harassing the Indian Shikh, Whitey using the term "spic," Whitey persecuting and stealing from the Jews, etc. etc. It's a very clear message - Whitey is just a racist pig and is always persecuting all the other races. There's a lot of racism from blacks towards Whitey in the world, but, it's not politically correct to acknowledge that, and definitely not in a Spike Lee film where Whitey is blamed for everything. So maybe Whitey Hollywood is tired of that? And that's why Whitey Hollywood won't give him money anymore? Maybe they don't want an Inside Man 2, full of more superfluous racial preaching scenes that don't have anything to do with the main plot? I don't know, just a thought. :D

Spike Lee's "Let's Hate on Whitey" preaching in all his movies does nothing towards the advancement of racial understanding. All he does is point fingers and continue the hate. If you want the races to arrive at a higher understanding you have to preach healing, and moving forward. Not perpetuating the blame game and continuing the hate. "Reverse racism" is just as bad as racism. Two wrongs don't make a right.

maybe he's still made that they named a T.V. channel after him

Inside Man is one of my favourite films, I love Clive Owen so it sucks there could've been another film that now isn't happening :(

Spike Lee lives on the Upper East Side in NYC. He could borrow against his home, max out his credit cards and make a movie. He doesn't want to go back to doing what he did back in the old days.
@ Q* bert: Spike Lee is not a racist. He is vocal, and many are not used to hearing Black voices raised. "Inside Man" looked at a bank heist amid "the gorgeous mosaic" of NYC. Y'know what–so did "Dog Day Afternoon" some 30 years ago. The Sidney Lumet film also used the term "spics" and invoked the racial politics of NY state at that time (post-Attica riots). It also made room in the plot line for gays. Why? Because that is what FILMMAKERS do. They keep things topical and stir debate.
Spike Lee is like many who came before him: political, opinionated and current. He should not be muzzled or stereotyped.

    Re: caroaber

Reading comprehension doesn't seem to be your strong point. You clearly only read/see what you want to. I think you need to go back and re-read things and try a little harder.

Maybe he should suck it up and ask Tyler Perry for advice…

  17. 17

Word on the street is he's working on a documentary about Big Freedia, the bounce rapper from New Orleans right now. Love her—'The Queen Diva.' Blockbusters aren't necessarily where success is right now, and just because he's interested in where his history is doesn't make him racist…

  18. 18

It IS possible to make a great movie without spending millions and millions of dollars to do so. Spike is a smart man, he should know that. That's just a cop out.

Sure, I'd like to see Spike's career continue to progress. Leave this one, and start something else and come back to Inside Man later when the blocks might clear.
