Brooklyn Bishop Rejects Generous School Donations From Gay Marriage Supporters

| Filed under: Gay Gay GayPolitikSad SadLGBT

In yuckie news, we have the sad, sad story of a Catholic Bishop who so vehemently denies gays the right to marry, he goes to the selfish length of refusing donations meant for students.

Soon after New York passed the bill allowing same-sex marriage, Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio called it 'another nail in the coffin of marriage.'

He then announced anyone who voted in support would be denied the ability to honor students with donations or even come to Catholic school events and parishes.

Joseph Lentol, an assemblyman as well as a Catholic, voted in support of the bill. When he sent a check to honor a student at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel's, he received a rejection letter in return.

When asked to comment, Lentol said:

I was certainly surprised because I know the church needs the money and the school certainly needs the money for the scholarship program they run

Wtf? Seriously, wtf. No, seriously, WTF!?!

We find it appalling that a leader in such an institution would object to any positive support of its children.

We also find it shocking they would ban their own members from attending any church functions over something that causes harm to none.

Ri-dic-u-lous. Whatever happened to 'love one another,' huh?

Why is it sooooo difficult for you to understand that not everyone agrees with you? Why is it sooooo difficult for you to understand that Christians don't support gay marriage because it goes against their beliefs? that's really the agenda here though, isn't it? It's not just that you want gay marriage, you want everyone to have to accept your beliefs, no matter what theirs are.

typical liberals, they're really the most intolerant jerks around.

This is so so sad :(

Re: AliceV – How does gay marriage go against Christian beliefs? The initial message of Christianity was love and forgiveness for everyone, not love and forgiveness for everyone, except gay people. The homophobic angle was created by people further down the line, by one gospel which was then reverberated by the church to suit their own ends. The church at times is so far from the true message of Christianity the hypocracy is amazing. They think two people declaring their love for each other is wrong if they are the same sex and instead decide to spew out hatred? I know who is further from being Christian here. Also, the church's constant tirade against homosexuality is undermined by the fact that there is a child molestation issue related to and hushed up by the church virtually every other week. So don't go pulling th whole 'faith' thing because not all of us Christians agree with your personal views (which are not religious ones). There was a time when this religion burned people alive for being witches which was against the 'faith', there was a time women were 'inferior' because it was 'the faith'. Times change, get over it and leave your bigotry at the door.

Also, whether this guy agrees or disagrees with the issue is beyond the point, he refused money that could have gone to help people meaning peoples lives will be slightly worse of than they could have been. Which is also against the message of Christianity.

I see that as a good thing! Let them run out of money and close down for good!

Re: Jajay119 – wow, well said , you stole the words outa my brain, but i couldn't have said it so well!

  9. lck says – reply to this

There used to be a saying about "cutting off your nose to spite your face" and it seems to be the case here, about doing something so destructive just to continue your ridiculous position. The catholic church is so rigid it can't even accept money while they are in need of cash. Fuck Them.

Re: AliceV – Please don't speak for all Christians! Being Catholic I completely support gay marriage, and while I understand those who don't this is going way to far! Read the article again moron and see just who's beliefs are being imposed on who. I'm sure you can't even say why it goes against Christians beliefs. Some *not all* Christians are sheep and only say something is wrong because their religious leaders say so! You are the Jerk! and let me repeat DON'T SPEAK FOR ALL CHRISTIANS!!!

  11. Bytch says – reply to this

Wow you're very anti-Catholic. I find you offensive, you expect people to be open minded about gays and you constantly pick on Catholics. You know, I've seen a couple of gay men act like assholes, maybe I should generalize as well.

  12. 12

Re: Jajay119 – Its on the Bible. Period. It says homosexuality no no. Just read it. So yes, gay marriage goes against it.

  13. 13

Might as well start giving Muslims pork to eat

  14. 14

  15. 15

Well, Mario, if you want people to be accepting of your beliefs, you have to be accepting of theirs. This is exactly the reason why gay marriage is no legal all over the country. You say that what people do in their bedrooms is none of anyone elses business. Well, what he does in a private school is none of your business. The Catholic religion is against gay marriage. Get over it.

  16. 16

Re: MarioMonjack – Yes, he would accept those donations - especially from the molesters, those are his brethren

  17. 17

Time to take their tax exemptions away…i don't want my tax dollars supporting these racist homophobes.

    Re: Jajay119

    Excellent post @ 4.

  19. 19

Church and state should be seperate! Church can do what they want ans you should be able to marry but only through gov. Stop being so entitled.

  21. 21

Stupid people and I dont mean the catholic church.

  22. 22

Me thinks he protest too much

  23. 23

    (and no, i'm not Catholic)

  24. 24

Re: bleahf – I HAVE read it, I studied the damn thing from a literal and liberal perspective for 2 years solid. It's written in ONE gospel.Look at other storie, feeding of the five thousand, curing of the blind man etc they appear in all gospels, through slightly different versions but each gospel says it. The fact that only one says it is enough to show me that this was his own personal opinion. Not to mention it goes against the message Jesus was preaching. The bible also says 'thou shalt not suffer a witch to live for she is evil'. Do we go around burning pagans and wicans? No. The bible also says bushes can talk and a man can part an entire sea. It also says you should renounce your riches and give them to the poor, yet the catholic church is the richest person in the world and there are Christians dying on the streets! If you're pulling the 'go educate yourself angle then it's not gonna work, because I already have.

You don't agree with homosexuality, that's fine, it's your right, but don't hide behind religion for something that is ultimately your own agenda.

  25. 25

I love how people are so quick to say "he's a catholic bishop, he's a child molester" but would freak out at someone being called "gay." It's the same hasty generalization, and frankly it's disgusting. As a Catholic school, they have the right to take or deny any money or student they choose, and it really has nothing to do with you Perez! Not all people believe in gay marriage or support it, and all the "tolerance" that you love to preach is apparently one sided. People who don't support gay marriage need to be tolerant, but people that believe in gay marriage don't have to be tolerant of people that disagree with it? Sounds hypocritical to me!

  26. 26

Re: bleahf – Technically it just says men should not lay together. So lesbians are totally chill in God's book. Hmmm, he must be a bro.

  27. 27

Re: AliceV – It's not that it's the fact that their own bigotry is stopping the kids from receiving much-needed money.
And by the way, not all Christian's hate gays, there are gay Christians…

  28. 28

It doesn't matter if you agree with his beliefs, Perez. What escapes you is that the man is standing by his convictions, and he's not willing to sell out (unlike you). He believes that homosexuality is a sin, and rather than take the easy money, he has the backbone to refuse it from those who support the homosexual agenda. I respect that the man follows through on what he preaches. He is as entitled to his beliefs as you are, and if you don't like that he stands firm, that's really tough shit. I actually think it's hilarious that your pink ruffled panties are in a twist over it; if you're such a passionate supporter of "equal rights for all," then you are required to recognize and respect HIS rights, not just your agenda. You are, however, a hypocrite of epic proportions, and want everything YOUR way. Life doesn't work that way Princess, so you're just going to have to get over it. Meanwhile, I'll be having yet another laugh at your expense.

  29. 29

Re: Jajay119 – sweet jesus you put it on THEM with both comments! veryyyyy well said

  30. 30

Re: kygirl810 – Even when it's to help needy people? that just goes SO against everything a catholic preaches, i myself am catholic and can't help but to feel stupid calling myself one when i see stories like these. And people wouldn't bring up priests molesting young boys if it didn't happen, and it happens quite often both reported and not.
It's just too hypocritical for people not to bring it up, honestly the church is nothing more then a business and all businesses have corruptions so fuck them.

  31. 31

Re: bleahf – Where? Where in the Bible does God, or Jesus, say that it is wrong and that all homosexuals should be punished?

  32. 32

Leviticus 18:22 - "Do not lie with a man as one lies with a woman; that is detestable."

Leviticus 20:13 - "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."

This is what it says in the Bible!

I believe marriage is more about love than it is about religion! If you love someone enough to spend the rest of your life with them then it should not matter who you are or who you love.
Many Christian denominations believe these scriptures condemn homosexuality, and honestly it is a persons right to believe what they must. The bishop in this case has every right to deny donations based on what he believes " although its complete idiocy" he is against gay marriage and he has that right!

  33. 33

good thing he did that. we should eradicate religion from all sectors of society. those enemies of reason only slow society progress.

  34. 34

Hmmm… I don't know. I understand the bishop's stance, but I wonder if he would have accepted a donation from a politician who was pro-choice? Or anyone else who didn't match his Catholic ideals? It just seems to be a selective discrimination and its a shame that a political stunt will hurt a student who could really use the money to further his/her education. =/

  35. 35

Meanwhile, in related news, a Brooklyn Bishop cut off his nose to spite his face.

He must have missed the California Prop 8 Appeals Court Decision. After months of testimony, the judge asked the Plaintiff's attorney in the open court proceeding : "How exactly does same sex marriage threaten traditional marriage ?"
    Plaintiff Attorney : "I don't know".

  36. 36

"…the Catholic hierarchy has lost most of its credibility with the wider culture on matters of sexuality and personal morality, just as it has lost its authority within the Catholic community on the same issues." from National Catholic Reporter
The Catholic church's fiscal wellness should not be of any concern by any elected official who seeks reelection.

  37. 37

Re: bleahf – It may be in the Bible but it doesn't mean all Christians believe it. The way I see it, if God didn't want it, He wouldn't have created it.

  38. 38

Re: KunTrohl – That is not from the Roman Catholic Bible! Sounds like an edited version from the Westboro Baptist Chruch. Let me remind people, that one of the saints within the catholic church was a lesbian and she was married. In the 1300's the church actually did same sex unions. Just saying . . .

  39. 39

but for many years the Catholic church accepted the donations from known Mafia members
doubt if you would have seen him hand John Gotti back his cheque
he probably would have smiled and posed for a photo with him as he took it….
    just sayin'

  40. 40

I'm straight, but how dare this jerkwad turn down donations from gay marriage supporters?!? It's people like this bishop who have so many prominent gay celebrities coming out against gay marriage. He should be ashamed of himself.

  41. 41

The Diocese of Brooklyn banned state officials who voted for same-sex marriage from honoring students or even appearing at Catholic schools and parishes as punishment for their role in destructing “the single most important institution in human history.”
Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio announced the ban TWO DAYS after New York State passed a law allowing gay couples to tie the knot…
………. DiMarzio asked Catholic schools and parishes to refuse any awards from Gov. Andrew Cuomo or state legislators who supported the measure………..'

  42. 42

Assemblyman Joseph Lentol sent his CHECK OF $50, yes, for a GRAND TOTAL OF $50 to his Local PARISH, not to the BISHOP, and the PRIEST followed the Ban put in place last month and sent it back. This 'Ban' will be in place for the 'foreseeable future' and while donations will be impacted, it deals with politicians showing up at graduations and awards and signing all those 'CONGRATULATIONS' for doing this and that. It will end, The Catholic Church is upset… But, why this Assemblymens name and GENEROUS donation are put together and it is $50…………. MORONIC

  43. 43

What does the bishop not marrying gays have to do with the law? church and law don't go together. The law of the land is not the law of the church. So if you are gay and want to get married THEN GO GET MARRIED IN COURT or anywhere you want with a notary. Whats the big deal?! now if you want to get married under the church by a pastor or priest then your just shyt out of luck. The majority of STRAIGHT couples aren't even married by the church now a days anyway. YOU CANNOT CHANGE THE LAW OF GOD. so quit trying and be happy with the fact that you can be married the other way. and YES I AM A PROUD CATHOLIC, and the stereotypes against catholics is a big pile of crap. I'm not against the unity of gays, My best friend is gay and I would walk her wedding if she wanted me to and my entire VERY CATHOLIC family would be there supporting her the entire way and most likely being the ones to plan the whole thing lol, so it's not that catholics are against GAYS, we just know that there is NO going around the law of God . God stated it clearly in the bible that man with man = NOT ALLOWED within His law. but God also gave us free will and you have the free will to choose to marry any other way you want. So quit your bitching and go make yourself pretty and have a huge wedding [or a private one] how ever you want and be happy. btw just to state a fact. the word "Marriage" is a Biblical term not a state term[this was taught to me by another very gay friend].

Re: GayRay – hmm well since your gay then I guess I should just generalize the entire gay community and say they all have aids… right? yeah NO so you need to shut up.

  46. 46

Re: alexie silver – Slow society? really what the hell do you do to help society progress? EVERYONE looks at the wrongs of others, but no one cares to see the thousand of priest, nuns, or catholic or any active christian working their asses off helping those in need, helping families all around the world. humbling themselves to the point of going to the most poverish areas and rebuilding life their from nothing. to be a true catholic or christian is to serve your neighbor, its to live a life of charity. so while you sit behind your computer and saying very ignorant things, there are thousands of this "enemies" of yours HELPING OUT SOCIETY AND ITS NEEDS like a child dying of hunger. THATS the real meaning of helping out society. SI TU NO SIRVES A TU HERMANO, TU NO SIRVES PARA NADA.

  47. 47

Re: Jajay119 – People think that these priest who molested these innocent lives are being hushed?!?!? really!? the hell would you know, these cases are taken extremely serious. and there are thousands of priests WHO DON'T DO THAT, and are saddened and sickened by what these other man have done. There is a new law within the church called "VIRTUS" look it up! where you have to go through an extensive background check, fingerprinting, psychological evaluation and training to be able to know what to look for in a sexual predator and with out going through all of this you are NOT allowed around children in the church. so Priests, volunteers, any one working within the church who works with kids cannot work with out doing virtus 1st…. We cannot promise that it will work 100% but we have a lot of people who if ONE does do something we can catch it quickly…. there is good and bad in EVERYTHING and EVERYWHERE. just because God is good doesn't mean the the Catholic Church which is led by men here on earth, that the bad in man wont be able to get in. so forgive us for not being perfect. but child abuse and those cases do get taken extremely seriously. get your facts straight.

  48. 48

    Re: AliceV – RIGHT ON!

  49. 49

He should accept donations from anyone not harming anyone else.

Standing by his convictions means he doesnt marry them, but rejecting members donations for students?

Thats not anti catholic. Thats anti hate.

  50. 50

let them suck money out of their demented followers instead
i personally hate catholics . my ex a devout catholic was smoking pot and drinking the night before church only to PREACH at me after he was attending church weekly then screwing around with another devout catholic behind my back for 2 years
they are truelly twisted people all interbred and basically disgusting
wiry hair and effed up attitude that they are gods own
may god strike them down in their sleep…

  51. 51

Re: perez posse member 777 – What is it with people stereotyping because of one person…. Go live under a rock if you are going to generalize everyone… one your ex was a dick two the girl was stupid. Story of many peoples lives. BTW THEY AREN'T "DEVOUT" IF THEY DID WHAT THEY DID… They may call themselves that but they are nowhere near being devout. My ex was agnostic and he did the exact same thing plus he was beating the other girl and was emotionally abusive and manipulating.. so hmm should I generalize everyone who is agnostic for being abusive assholes… mmm again NO. Just because someone is baptized a certain religion doesn't mean they are actually going to practice the religion. My husband is baptized Baptist and he doesn't EVER do anything for his church. Good luck being bitter and hating everyone who has different beliefs than your own.

  52. 52

Re: hahaokok – God never said anything… the ones who wrote the bible said it.
Not the same thing at all.

  53. 53

Well it is their dicision.. everyone has their way oif thinking.. buti just don't see whats wrong with being gay.. if it's not your life why give a shit? It's their lose though if they don't wan't to except the money…

  54. 54

    Re: J-Doll – decision*

  55. 55

    Re: AliceV
Im a catholic, but i fully support same sex marriage. What ever happened to God loves everybody.sure perez can be kinda stubborn on his opinions, but in todays society, everybody should be accepted as they are.i realize that christians believe that ”homosexuality is a sin”.
i dont agree with that statement at all, but, anybody who does should still accept the lgbt community.if its a sin, then it shouldnt be any different to any other ”sin” eg lieing, being greedy et cetera et cetera.

  56. 56

Ok. You cannot be Catholic and support gay marriage. I'm sorry, that goes against the religion itself! Also, it is not against Christianity to be gay. It is against Christianity to be gay and engage in sexual activity. That's a huge difference. You dont have to agree with me or anyone else for that matter! That's the beauty of living in a free country. I also find it funny how when someone has an opinion against yours, they're trying to push propaganda when you are the one pushing propaganda. Respect each others opinions. Not everyone agrees with you, nor will they ever.
