Spike Lee Returns To The Big Screen! Directing Oldboy Remake

Well…we know what absolutely EVERY film school kid in the country will be tweeting about tonight!
Earlier this month, Spike Lee spoke up about why he hasn't made any feature films lately, and he basically said that nobody will give him the $$$ to make them!
Looks like somebody decided to open their wallet, because it has JUST been confirmed that Spike will direct Mandate Pictures' remake of South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook’s Oldboy.
Previously, Steven Spielberg had been attached to this project, and Will Smith was going to star in it.
For those who haven't seen the original, Mandate is describing the film's story as follows:
"[It's the story] of a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday. For fifteen years, he is held captive, and, upon his release, must begin his journey to find the reason for his imprisonment. He soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than his solitary confinement."
Very exciting! We'll def let you know when we hear more, although if you have any cinephile friends, you can be sure they'll be keeping you well informed.
This is BIG for film people…almost as big as Derek Jeter getting his 3,000th hit is for everyone else. Ha!
What do U think about Spike Lee directing the Oldboy remake? Is he right for the project?

I'm sure he's going to put Denzel Washington in it, instead of leaving it the way it is, an Asian film.
Lame! I'm not even Asian, and I hate how Asian films are remade with American/British etc, actors. Also Anime movies do the same.
Oh Jesus can we have some ORIGINAL films made please! Quit with all these damn remakes already! And I'm not watching anything his little angry-washed up ass directs. All he does is bash other directors, producers & actors that make movies that don't agree with his stupid little mind-set. Boooo! Leave Oldboy alone!
Hollywood why can't you just leave good films alone and disembark from your genre strictly being about reproduction. I don't care who the director is. Oldboy is one of those films that completely distorts your perception about cinema. It is void of cliche and expectations. By Hollywood producing a remake, the classic cliche of film-making, it cheapens the original. The film is also a part of a vengeance trilogy–what are they going to do remake those two films as well? Considering America has a lot to feel vengeful about, why don't filmmakers apply that to their own films?
My friends were raving about this movie so I netflixed the film. The movie was so intense, so original, and so not for the American Public. As amazing as this movie is, I wonder how they can remake for the Mass American Public and stay true to this epic film.
Buy some nose-hair clippers!!! You have gray nose hairs!!! EEEWWWWWW!
I love the original.
The original is a masterpiece! I'm actually pretty furious it's being remade, I agree that it only cheapens it. Why dumb down an amazing movie? It doesn't NEED to be "americanized" The movie is already made, It is FANTASTIC, & people can simply watch it as it already exists. I hate remakes. Nothing good ever comes from them. Oldboy is one of my all time favorite movies too.
Screw Spike Lee
lame ass
terrible overrate movie. if the remake gets made, it will just flop
