Could The Eighth Season Be The Last For Desperate Housewives?

| Filed under: TV NewsEva LongoriaTeri Hatcher

Teri Hatcher 8 or 9

We'd hate to see them go, but you can't argue with ratings.

So the real question is: is ABC confident in finding another hit to replace Desperate Housewives, or do they want another year to look around?

Everyone is signed back on for the 8th, with easy potential for the 9th. The higher ups are trying to decide right now if they want to go out with a bang this year or stretch it into next:

"Others, however, think ABC may wait until September to see how its new shows perform, and if Desperate Housewives sees another ratings drop. "It's all dependent on the ratings," says one insider. "It will be up against some stiff competition."

Not only will Housewives compete against CBS' The Good Wife this fall, it also regularly faces Sunday Night Football on NBC (should the NFL season resume as hoped) and key programming on cable. Housewives was the 24th most-watched prime-time show among broadcast networks last season, but has lost about half of its audience from Season 1."

It's a shame to hear that they've lost about half their audience, that can't be a positive factor in bringing it back!

We're kind of torn on this, because 8 seasons is no slouch for a series run. They've had their time and the ratings are starting to reflect a lack of interest. Despite how much we love those ladies, we can't help but wonder if the replacement could be fresh and mind-blowingly exciting!

What do U want? A 9th season or a new show?

I have watched since the beginning, but I think it has run its course - and probably should have quit a year ago.

how bout sticking around and giving a proper ending for the fans when the time comes? I'm tired of my favorite shows vanishing mid season (Like V)

What is it about these shows and Ratings? What happened to developing a following?

I miss Edie in it! She was so good!

No, the show can easily survive two more seasons. Though the ratings have dipped, the show still performs very well for an aging drama. I think that with improved writing, darker storylines and a real season-long mystery, the show may stableize and could work well for ABC over the next several seasons.

Re: WDPK83fm – Me too. But I don't really want to watch Susan and Bree become more and more plastic. So tired of the expressionless, tight botox look.

If they showed the show consistantly then I believe the ratings wouldn't be a problem. This past year - you never knew if it was going to be on. They took too many long breaks - not airing new episodes for 3 or 4 weeks at a time. :( bad ABC.

    ditto for me

I still like it. But the competition goes beyond football and The Good Wife. Sunday night is the usual night for HBO/Showtime/Starz "originals" - and they draw a lot of viewers.

As longs as they don't leave the show with the biggest cliffy I'm fine.

Last season was a bore fest and ya never knew when the show was on or not on. If it happens again this season it should be it's last. The story lines last season were so boring and not interesting at all. We all know that Lynette is a nagger and nags all the time at Tom, nothing new there. ABC is going downhill with their shows lately. Combat Hospital is one stupid and not interesting show this summer. I don't know who would watch crap like that. Oh well.

I've watched since the beginning, but I think it's time to end this series. Last season was dull.
