Zooey Deschanel Vs. The LA Times

zooey deschanel vs la times

You tell 'em, Zooey!

In yesterday's LA Times opinion column, journalist Patt Morrison spoke out against Zooey Deschanel for saying the following about Downtown L.A. at the BAFTA gala, which was attended by the royal couple:

"I just don't want them to see the worst of L.A."

Here's what Morrison wrote in response:

"I can't believe Zooey Deschanel is really the snobby cow she came off sounding like Saturday evening."

"I cannot apologize enough to Ms. Deschanel that in some places, the sidewalks do not smell like Jo Malone candles."

When Zooey read Morrison's column, she took to her website to fight the comments. She claims that the quote Morrison took issue with was "taken completely out of context," and that it was meant to be funny.

More from Zooey:

"You also open your piece by calling me a 'cow', which might be your opinion, but I wish a journalist for the Los Angeles Times and KPCC had found a more sophisticated way of sharing a difference in perceived opinion."

Yeah, we're def on Team Deschanel here! It's clear that her comment was innocent enough, and calling her a "snobby cow" was very immature and inappropriate.

Who do U side with here? Zooey or LA Times' Patt Morrison?

I think the "taken out of context" excuse is usually B.S…it is a lame attempt for people to not take responsibility for what they have said….also, the LA Times writer should not have called her a "cow"…that is sexist and very demeaning in my opinion…not cool…Lastly, for us that actually know downtown L.A., well, it has cleaned up a lot! Lofts and restaurants…it still has skid row, but it IS improving….I am sure the Royals would just be seeing the same ole if they went into Bel Air/Bev. Hills and did the exclusive tour….LA has much to offer, just depends on what one wants to do…

    She is a talentless cow.

What was funny about that. Its the worst of L.A., its there, it should be seen by so many people and not ignored. There are people and children who live in it. Its the kind of place you drive through and lock your car because of what you see. Did Zooey not know that there were so many other events that were pretty and stylish. Zooey get out side and see how some people live. I like Pat Morrison and I think she made her point. Next time Zooey says something so ignorant she needs to understand the good the visit will provide to those who live there and the charities who need help to support the community.

I agree that it was pretty unprofessional of the reporter to call her a "cow"… but she really does sound like a snobby cow. Just sayin'

He needs to get fired asap :/

if you wikipedia patt morrison… they stated under the "life" section : " She recently referred to actress Zooey Deschanel as a "cow", which is ironic because Morrison's body is shaped much more like a cow than Deschanel's." bahahaha

I thought Americans loved their Free Speech? Why can't someone give their opinion, whether they meant it to be humourous or otherwise? Apparently a lot of L.A. isn't pretty, can someone not state a fact? I think Morrisson needs to calm down and find some real news to get all in a tizzy about.

I'm sure a lot of people on here passing judgement on Zooey's sentence would be horrified if they were to ever be quoted for anything they say on a daily basis. I wonder if Morrison actually read her whole interview or just read that one line on a blog and went into a fit. I'm sure a lot of people here would be stoned to death if what they said out loud was only captured in selective sound bites.

LA is a shithole. I'm glad she had the balls to say that and if a reporter is upset about it she could have been a little more professional in her response to Deschanel's comment. Seriously, calling her a cow? Childish.

  12. 12

Zcow's comment was rude and she should take responsibility for it.. not the writer..

  13. 13

I have to agree with sanfran1, the "taken out of context" bit sounds like a cop out. If it was taken "out of context", then maybe she should reiterate what she said in context, which obviously she does not do. She also doesn't have to worry about them seeing the worst of L.A., England has its own hard and gritty neighborhoods.

I am offended because time and time again, these west siders denigrate and fear the east side of L.A. and downtown. But I don't know how "REAL" this Morrison guy is either. Maybe he's just a poser who feels he is one with the people and needs to defend it? Maybe he's over compensating for all the rich white people who run the show. Who knows. But That cow comment was a bit much. LOL.

I am actually a fan of Zooey's acting and singing. It's refreshing that she's not a size zero bobblehead like so many other Hollywood actresses. She looks healthy. Zooey's new show on Fox this fall looks like it could be good.

  15. 15

the journalist called it, most people including you were dismayed the royals were going to skid row let's recall that we're all human even if we have no cash,

  16. 16

Re: Melty Mi – Before you state something she "obviously" doesn't do - be sure to take maybe 2 mins and check. SHE DID reiterate what she said in an open letter to the writer of the article who is actually a woman by the way. Also, she doesn't live on the Westside.

  17. 17

i would love to know the context it was taken out of so I could form an opinion on the actual comment. until then what really can be said. more importantly….Patt (who i am not a fan of even a little bit…i find her trite) writes a column that is not news…it is her opinion…..so why should i care what she writes….i don't read her drivel in the first place….as far as the event downtown…..looked lovely….and like all the other events that happen around LA….

  18. 18

I don't even know why, what Zooey said, was even rude.

  19. 19

You should have also added that Zooey Deschanel didn't even say said quote. She made a comment about a parking lot near the theatre that had a lot of trash and in order to be funny she said " 'It's funny they brought royalty here, there is a parking lot with trash around the corner." Which proves that the journalist was unprofessional.
Although, I think Deschanel's response proves how awesome and modest she is :)

  20. 20

It was very obviously taken out of context. The writer and the people on here who are making a big deal over it really should read the entire quote by her. As for being a cow & snobby, she's really tiny and is one of the nicest people I've ever met.

  21. 21

Good for you Zooey! Some of these journalists think they have a right to attack people and get away with it.

  22. 22

Re: Melty Mi – She does, this is old news, Perez already wrote an article on it. Do some research.

  23. 23

Well actually, she had already commented on Entertainment Weekly taking that comment out of context way before this person made these comments about her. In fact, she and Jonah Hill both complained about it days ago. Zoeey Deschanel is known to be a hard core fan on LA and loves living here. She discusses it most articles written about her. I think that the reporter was unprofessional but she does have a right to her opinions. I don't understand why people continually go for the jugular and insult people on a personal level rather than truly dealing with the issue that bothers them. I find it to be the most disheartening thing about accessibility to public forum today whether in comments or press.

I think her comment was stupid, immature, and inappropriate so the LA times is right. She is a stupid cow !!!

  25. 25

The reporter was unprofessional but the truth of their statement still stands: why should the nastier side of LA be hidden away? Zooey may have the luxury of being able to drive past giving contemptuous looks to the locals but for some people that is their life.

  26. 26

You people are total idiots! That's not even exactly what she said! She just made a comment about the area being a bit dirty and then Pat made that comment about her. You are all being childish and immature to say that she is a cow, when actually she's a beautiful, talented actress who LOVES LA. Get over yourselves and don't think you're any better than anyone else because you're hiding behind a computer screen.
