Boo! Netflix Prices Going Up…A LOT!

| Filed under: Film FlickersTech TalkBusiness Blitz

netflix prices going up a lot

You are NOT impressing us lately, Netflix!

Last month, the National Association of the Deaf filed a lawsuit against the company for not providing closed captioning for most of their streaming movies.

We were thinking it was bullshiz that the hearing impaired couldn't enjoy the same features as everyone else, and now Netflix is pulling some more bullshiz by raising prices!

The company announced that they'll be raising the price for unlimited streaming/one-out-at-a-time unlimited DVD rentals by 60%! It'll go from $9.99 to $15.98 per month! WTF?!?!?

They'll now be offering plans for unlimited streaming only OR unlimited one-out-at-a-time DVDS only for $7.99/month each, but given the fact that people were previously able to get both for only $2 more, that seems really lame.

Here's what a Netflix exec had to say about the new price options:

"By offering our lowest prices ever, we hope to provide great value to our current and future DVDs by mail members."

And here's what Netflix's VP of Marketing Jessie Becker had to say about it:

"Creating an unlimited DVDs by mail plan (no streaming) at our lowest price ever, $7.99, does make sense and will ensure a long life for our DVDs by mail offering."

It's seriously uncool that they're trying to make it seem like this is a GOOD thing for subscribers. The streaming option is one of the best aspects of Netflix service, and we're thinking that LOTS of people will have to reassess the value of their memberships based on these changes.

What do U think about Netflix's price changes?

    That is ridiculous.
Looks like I will be canceling my netflix membership. SUCKS!

  2. 2

They can now kiss my subscription goodbye.

  3. 3

I was so pissed when I got the notice today. It said "to better reflect the costs of each." bull. You can never find anything to watch on Netflix and people have pretty much watched everything they wanted on there by now … this seems redonkulous. Grrr!! Pay more! Pay more! NOM NOM MONEY NOM NOM …. fucking idiots.

  4. 4

One quick question for you, Mario: Raised your advertising rates at all in the last 5 years? Yeah? Then STFU.

  5. 5

I don't get netflix… thought about it. did not know the price…. I think I will now. When you did the 'WENT UP A LOT!!!!' I thought it might be up to like $50 a month. Under 20 bucks a month Mario. IF YOU ARE LUCKY, YOU CAN GET 1 DVD AT THAT PRICE-$15.98. Put it in this prospective-you go to Mcdonalds with your kids. Young kids, happy meals- are what $3.99? (mine too old) and other meals-like $6.99 so a family of 4-$21.96 . If your kids are older and you all get 'adult meals-$27.96 Unless you are LUCKY and can get them to order off the $1 menu-I do, THEY DON'T. But the thing is, 1 trip to a fast food place and you are over the netflix charge. And if you do a Movie trip-$6 for a kid(?) $10 for an adult? +++++ Even going up 60%, THEY ARE STILL A BARGIN!!!

  6. 6

It sucks, but I was never using my discs anyway. It was just a good reason for me to switch to streaming only.

  7. 7

they raised prices 3 months ago!!! i'm canceling since they are slow to update their movies anyway

  8. 8

I just have the instant for $7.99 but the selection sucks! Every time I put a movie in it is not for streamline is this going to change? If they did that there pricing would go down cuz they wouldn't have all the mailing and dvd overhead!

  9. 9

I bet those people at National Association of the Deaf are feeling like idiots right about now, having to cancel their membership. Its their own fault.

  10. 10

Im cancelling my subscription. Ii originally signed up for their streaming video, but they have the most god awful selection available. Anytime i type in a movie i want to see, it never comes up as "PLAY". It always comes up as "ADD" Whats the point of subscribing if they have nothing i want to watch on the fly.

  11. 11

Anyone who is surprised by this really doesn't have a clue. Since Netflix introduced its online streaming feature in 2007, membership has climbed from 6 million to 23 million. And movie studios and broadcast stations have taken notice, and they want more from Netflix for their content because demand has risen so dramatically. Did you think Netflix just gets all these movies for free? Get a clue. They're not just doing it to screw people over. And they're adding more and more content online everyday to make the service even better. It's still much cheaper than cable, so continue to bitch if you want, but you're still getting a deal. And get ready Hulu fees are next!

  12. 12

We are keeping Netflix. I this this sucks for most users but for us it's still a deal. We have canceled our cable saving $80/mo. We may go down to two disks at a time instead of three to keep from paying an extra $5/mo but that's all we will change.

  13. Nix says – reply to this

I'm cancelling before the rates go up. The streaming selection SUCKS and I can get dvds from Redbox instead.

  14. 14

Re: justtfax – I agree and here is the thing… I got my letter yesterday also, the just streaming has always been 7.99 since they started it, it is the dvd out program part that is going up and mine is only 11.99 now granted that is more than before but still not 15.99… why does idiot have to blow everything out of proportion and I mean everything…. then again… why do I even subject myself to his bull in the first place haha.. glutton for punishment I guess but no, I wont cancel my netflix because of this… it is still a great deal… much more price raising though and I might

  15. 15

    Re: BlueRafael
This pretty much sums it up. Making everything close captioned isn't cheap, someone has to absorb the cost. Did you expect they would take the money out of their own pockets?

  16. 16

I'm cancelling, they don;t even stream new releases. I”m onto Redbox permanently now

  17. 17

i stopped the subscribtion a while ago.. they have a shitty selection for movies on there. i gotta find a better movie rental program, anyone know a good one for canada???

  18. 18

I was totally cheesed off when I got this email. My bill would go up $5+ when may not SEEM like a lot, but this is the second time in recent memory they've done this since I've been member. I'll be going to strictly streaming service after this.

Why not just offer a short discount for new members to sign up for either just DVD services or both and leave the other prices be. They're as bad as Blockbuster used to be.

  19. 19

Netflix is stupid they will be losing so many customers. We stream all our movies and tv shows to our xbox or this computer that is connected to our TV we pay 5$ a month and we stream whatever TV show or movie we want from our computer..No need for cable either. It's awesome. Good luck netflix..lol soon most people will be doing this :)

  20. 20

Already downgraded my plan. $7.99/month for streaming only for me.

I'll just wait for movies to hit cable or go to Redbox now.

At least it's better than hulu where they charge you then make you watch commercials.

  21. 21

I would join a lawsuit against Netflix. My son gave me a gift subscription and at the end of june i stayed with it, liking the idea of seeing OLD movies and TV shows instantly and ordering "NEW RELESAES" to be delivered. Like so many other services can they break oour contract with less than a years service? I want to rewrite the contract and tell them to get more access to more new DVD's or my service is only $3.99. they don't carry everything! Are they promising us to see NEW RELEASES instantly? they are not doing it now!!! SO the real choice is do you want just the old stuff or access to the JUST RELEASED stuff… that is your real choice … anyone know a lawyer??

  22. 22

LOL I never understood Netflix, we stream all our TV shows and movies(even brand new movies still in theaters) from our computer to our TV, unlimited for 5 bucks a month no need for cable..I live with an IT so he set it all up. Netflix will soon be out run by technology.

  23. 23

Perez, it's not Netflix's fault. Why don't you blame the studios who, instead of adapting to this new technology and offering the services their audience wants, are jacking up the cost for Netflix when they renegotiate their contracts. It's the downfall of the music industry all over again. Netflix has no choice. I'm pissed, but not at Netflix.

  24. 24

While the price increase certainly does suck, I'm assuming the cost of shipping out DVDs as well as paying for all the rights to stream these shows isn't cheap. I'm not sure if we will be canceling or not, but considering we don't have cable at our house, this is our source of entertaintment which is by far cheaper than cable.

  25. 25

I can't believe people are this pissed. Netflix was locked into AWESOME contract rates b/c they were a NEW service and it's hard to quantify how successful they would be. Now that it's been what, 5 years?, the contracts are expiring and movie studios are wanting to cash in on the milk cow that they missed out on these past five years. My fee is going up a total of $4.00 per month which is only $50/ year. That is a small price to pay, considering I save on not going to theatres or having to drive to a store to find a DVD that may or may not be there, or finding space for DVD's I may watch once in a blue moon, but love on that random time. Netflix could offer you such a hot deal before because the studios didn't realize just what it would become. Now they know… so don't blame Netflix that others are greedy and want some of that green, thank them for giving us an opportunity to experience something that CHANGED the way we view movies forever. I guess I'm just a glass is half full kind of person though

  26. 26

I'm pretty disappointed but I have been thinking about dropping my DVD plan for a while anyway. I always forget to send them back and they don't even get new releases right away! Plus there's always a wait when they finally do. I'm sticking with streaming since I have an Apple TV but I'll be renting my movies from iTunes from now on.

  27. 27

Not worried. Will keep my membership for unlimited streaming …… there are other providers and sources for movie……both free and pay. Netflix has a lousy selection of new releases anyway……has for years! But free streaming is a good source for films that received a limited (or no) release and are good films…..also their foreign film selection is outstanding. I seen some of the best foreign films lately that never would have had access to. Folks should know that most American films these days are remakes of foreign films!

  28. 28

Yeah I just deleted mine today, it's getting ridiculous. I have had my membership for about a year now and this is the 3rd time the have raised prices.

  29. 29

Re: Wenchtits – You think adding the CC is expensive? Ignorance is bliss, is it? If you knew about how the CC programs works, it is very very very inexpensive. In fact, there are many programs that can be used … for FREE.

That's how dumb you are, fool.

  30. 30

It's scary how few of these comments understand that the pricing change will bring on a better service. Indeed, boo to the studios who aren't trying to get on the bandwagon. I only have streaming, but would gladly pay $15 for just that service if it meant a stronger catalogue.

  31. 31

Well, to be honest- people who go for the "cheaper" or "more convenient" internet-based options (ie: Netflix, Amazon) while putting Brick and Mortar stores (and the jobs they provide!) in jeopardy (ie: Blockbuster, Borders, B&N, etc.) shouldn't be surprised by the rise in price. Once those "cheap & convenient"options run their competitors out of business they have no choice but to raise prices as they'll probably have to pay more people and add further distribution. Just saying- once you've got a monopoly- the prices will NOT stay cheap.

  32. 32

I've heard that the studios will be benefitting from the price hike, so I don't mind paying more as long as the profits are helping support the film industry. Streaming, on-demand and Redbox have been screwing the hard-working people involved in filmmaking for a while now. What's cheap and convenient for us viewers is detrimental to the movie business.

  33. 33

It's just frustrating that those of us who have already subscribed don't get grandfathered in. I look forward to phone conversation I'll be having with them on Aug. 31st when I cancel my subscription.

  34. 34

AND realistically their streaming selection isn't all that great. If they want to increase their streaming options then I could see less people being upset about it.

  35. 35

love my netflix but now im seriously thinking of cancelling!the rates r getting rediculous.

  36. 36

Re: Nickyloo – Netflix and Redbox also employ people. How do you think the DVDs get in the mail. I have seen their operation and people are there working like crazy. Plus how do you think movies get to the Redbox kisok. Do they magically appear?

  37. @v@ says – reply to this

It's classic bait and switch marketing; offer low, low prices to hook people in, and then jack the rates. It's still a great deal at the new price if you watch a lot of movies. You almost pay that much to see one movie in a fancy movie theatre.

  38. 38

Here's the thing: Netflix is a luxury. You choose to pay for it. I am all for the equal rights, and believe that yes, Netflix has a duty to provide deaf people with closed captions. However, it's still a luxury. I can't sue Rolex because they don't make a talking watch and I'm deaf.

  39. caitd says – reply to this

I just talked to Netflix customer service, asking if they would be offering the same amount of dvds from streaming as they do for mailing, and they said no. So you have to pay the same amount for streaming and not have the same amount of movie selections? Lame.

  40. 40

I'm definitely downgrading, if not canceling my membership. Fuck that, netflix!

  41. 41

I knew Netflix was too good to be true. Big let down. BOOOOO!

  42. 42

Re: mildlly amused – You made a really good point…but I'm still pissed about it. Oh well. It is what it is.

  43. 43

I too will downgrade come September. Can't afford everything going up and up and up. Something has to be cut and this will be it. Hello Redbox and possibly Blockbuster will make out in what is happening.

  44. 44

  45. 45

We're keeping our Netflix. Streaming and 1 out at a time. I can't tell you how much we've saved in rental and late fees.

  46. 46

I used to love Netflix but they are taking advantage of me by raising their prices. I live paycheck to paycheck and Netflix is a my guilty pleasure. I'll have to check out their competition to see the best place to take my business.
