Sorry, Gleeks! Three Of Your Faves Won't Be Returning For Season Four!

glee characters not returning for season 4

Hopefully they'll return in a spin-off or something!

Last month, Ryan Murphy spoke about season three of Glee, and it was sounding as though it would be the last season for those whose characters will be graduating.

Now, the series creator has confirmed that Lea Michele, Chris Colfer, and Cory Monteith will not return for the show's fourth season! Sad!

He explains:

"You can keep them on the show for six years and people will criticize you for not being realistic, or you can be really true to life and say when they started the show they were very clearly sophomores and they should graduate at the end of their senior year."

"We’ve never done anything by the book. We made that decision and I involved Chris and Lea and they thought that was a good idea. They both trust the writing and trust me and felt that it would be great to have an open and closed experience for them to go out while they were on top."

"We already made the decision before the new writers came in, but everybody likes where we’re taking it and what we’re writing toward."

MINOR SPOILER ALERT: Here's Ryan on his plans for Lea in season three:

"I’m much more interested in Lea’s character — not so much on her relationship with Finn, but more on what her dreams are beyond high school and how she plans on getting them. That’s what my senior year was about."

As disappointing as it will be to see these characters go, we totally respect and appreciate what Ryan's trying to do here. It would be pret-ty lame if they tried to figure out ways to keep everyone around, even though they're graduating.

Plus, we have no doubt we'll be seeing PLENTY more of Lea, Chris, and Cory! We just hope they'll be back, in one way or another.

What do U think?? Will U be sad to say goodbye to Rachel, Finn, and Kurt?

    I'm sad there's a season 4.

  2. 2

FUCK U RYAN! I won't watch without Lea!! the 3 best are going! no way! what makes you think I will watch for mercedes or brittany or those other boring characters that sing so so the 2 best singers are going. and hey smallville continued with the main characters when the finnished high school, so yes you can make more seasons with Lea please!!!!

  3. 3

oh no i am really upset by this but it's for the best

  4. 4

I get it but I do think the show will fail once Lea leaves. People love her more than anyone else on the show. Aside from that, only doing 3 seasons is stupid…should be 4.

  5. 5

Re: paulina=dan radcliffe fan #1 – Exactly!!!! Lea is the best thing about the show!!!!!!!!!!!! :( Ryan Murphy is a moron.

  6. 6

I think some of the cast members might have been getting 'too big for their britches'.

More cash demands, diva behavior and generally swell headed.

Best their should be gotten rid of. If they really are 'star material', they'll do just fine.

    If not,..

The truth will be told. Either way, time for them to go.

  7. 7

sooooo sad :( KURT AND LEA WHYYYYY!!!!!!!! :( they are the one I love the most with Sue !!!!!

  8. 8

these 3 should seriously look at the cautionary example of David Caruso leaving NYPD Blue..leaving a hit series thinking he could head out for bigger and better things
    .
long story short- a few so-so movie rolls- a lot of time off and now finally back to TV with CSI Miami
should have stayed with Blue for a few more seasons
    .
these 3 are still so young-they should stick out Glee a bit longer and not mistake their narrow role and popularity from it for universal acting acceptance- there is a big difference- but someone must be telling them that they are "all that and a bag of chips" and to strike while the iron is hot
    .
but that approach to fame fails more than it succeeds

  9. 9

    thats a shame

  10. 10

Pretty sure we'll be saying goodbye to everyone soon. They have made practically the whole cast gay, and america is not so much a fan of that and will continue to switch off as they have done with season 2. plus the writing started to go downhill after the season one hiatus and it showed!

  11. 11

    Season 1 = Great!
Season 2= eeehhh ok. Too Many "themed" episodes and no character building.
Season 3 = kinda interested in seeing it, but not relly

removing 2 of the 4 people who get nominated for awards and are your shows biggest stars..

    Season 4 = ratings drop/cancelled.

  12. 12

Wow Ryan Murphy is an idiot!!!
It's like he wants the show to be cancelled in season 4.. he's taking out the 3 main characters and 2 of them have the best vocies on the show!!
I only watch the show because of Lea and Chris, they have the most interesting story lines in the show!
there goes all of their ratings in season 4…

  13. 13

Gee- Look at you Perez- copy & pasting from other entertainment sites. Such a shame you cannot actually get the interview yourself. Guess you aren't so popular in the gay world as you thought.

  14. 14

now we will not have to be anoyed by that verbose jap anymore.

  15. 15

CANCELED! Getting rid of the 3 main stars will not work. Character develop hasn't been done enough for the others to carry it on

  16. 16

These three are the main reason I'm even watching it.

  17. 17

He's going to kill his own show. This show is already "unrealistic" for a high school glee club that break into song and dance anywhere they go, really? And not to mention getting rid of an Emmy nominated actor (Chris Colfer) just so he can keep the "reality" of the show going. I know I won't be interested in it once part of the main cast is gone because in TV, there's just no replacing a main cast, it's never the same.

  18. 18

Wished they could have worked a story line out. Will certainly miss Kurt.

  19. 19

All 3 are my favorites and I'm sad to see them go, however I am very excited to be graduating with McKinley's Class of 2012!

  20. 20

Don't like any of them, their characters bug me especially Lea's. The character Kurt is sometimes funny but most of the time he's annoying.

  21. 21

First off let me say that Im a fan of the show and Im sure everyone has their own opinion on this. I personally am not happy with the direction of the show. Ryan Murphy has a history of destroying his shows after a few seasons and Im sure this will be no different. If you need proof of said destruction of the show, I give you the Glee project. It wasn't enough to have a really great idea, and fairly original execution of said idea, he had to turn it into a reality show. Im actually fine with Cory going as he can't sing, dance or act and he looks like a constipated toddler. (Yes, I know, I'll get letters.) But Lea and Chris are two of the more talented ones in the group as well as some of the only charachters with lives that anyone REALLY cares about. I just think its a little early in the shows lifespan to start dismantelling the cast. Especially when you consider that season one was only so so to begin with, so Murphy only has one really great season to speak of. Remember I said this even if you disagree, this marks the beginning of the end of Glee. Im not saying it will be taken off the air, (After all we love to keep shows past their prime while cancelling the promising ones.) but enjoy season 3 because it will probably be the last decent one if it's decent at all.

  22. 22

i agree with the decision to graduate them, but was his reasoning really that people would complain it would be unrealistic? absolutely nothing about glee is realistic

  23. 23

BOOOOO!!! I can't stand Rachel so I'm all about that but Kurt???! HE'S THE BEST THING ABOUT THE SHOW!! fuck this bullshit, I won't be watching this anymore. What a huge bummer! We love you Chris!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. 24

i think its a good idea… i'm sick of these "we're clearly 30, we're just still in highschool!" **cough, veronica mars, what? cough.**

  25. 25

Re: *Sloane – Um, pretty sure it was NOT Lea, Cory or Chris's decision to leave the show. Read again… get your facts straight….

  26. 26

This will ultimately result in the cancellation of the show, in my opinion. The cast is great as is and if Ryan was smart, after the first season, he would have figured out a way to extend the high school years as long as he could as to keep the same cast. When they leave, people will undoubtedly always compare new cast to old cast which will kill it. The concept of the show is good and all but these 3 actors especially made it EPIC. There will be no replacing them, no matter how hard Ryan tries. I knew they would have to leave eventually but at this point he should just end it and maybe come up with the premise for a new but similar show…

  27. 27

I kind of feel like he could have done something here, like oh I don't know, maybe stretched out their senior year in to two seasons? We've seen shows before that didn't go through an entire school year in one season, he definitely could have pulled it off here. Sorry, but I highly doubt many people would stick around without Lea, Cory and the ever amazing Chris Colfer.

  28. 28

I think a move like doesn't actually help the longevity of this show. It's bad enough that the show strayed from its original concept in the first season to a teenage soap opera in its second, now to let go some of their best singers? I don't see how its going to improve the show or bring in more viewers. I too doubt this show will go past 4 seasons, there's really not too many more places it can go.

  29. 29

Ryan Murphy should have kept them sophomores indefinitely. That's how most people like them. I have never seen the need to follow our calendar year. So what if it's not realistic. Keep them seniors for years! It feels more like family that way.

  30. 30

Sorry, Glee! Most of your audience won't be returning either.

  31. 31

Il be sad to see them go especially kurt however Im excited to see what new talent will be introduced in season 4

  32. 32

My favorites were Lea, Cory, Chris and Amber… so once Amber is gone, I'm gone. I think that he's an idiot for graduating them. There's no way the show is going to be nearly as good, considering those three are basically the face of Glee.

  33. 33

I really respect Ryan.. but I think now he's making a mistake.
Lea, Chris and Cory are the most important characters in Glee..
They make the story of Glee… The story of Glee involve them..
Even though I dont like Finchel, most of the episodes are about Finchel…
    And Klaine…
I really love Cory, he's so cute, and Glee would not be the same without him, Lea and Chris…
I think season 4 will be the worst.. there will be less audience.. Im sure.
    Well.. I hope Im wrong..
But.. arrrrgg.. I really cant imagine Glee WITHOUT Cory..
    ;(

  34. 34

a spin-off would be soo nice. lea michele's character has so much future. rachel could go to broadway, meet a guy, have obstacles and what not.

  35. 35

re: Aliceyu, I don't know. It never seems to work. Look at the Degrassi graduates, 90210 and all the sitcoms that start with children but as they complete high school the sitcoms usually end. No one seems to care about the adult lives of their favourites.

  36. 36

    No Lea, No Glee!
