Not cool, BBC!

The highly-popular UK series Torchwood featured a sex scene involving bisexual alien-hunter, played by gay actor John Barrowman, and a male bartender that was ultimately cut by the British channel.

Ironically, the scene remained intact on the U.S. airing of the show.

A show source said, "You can get away with scenes like that on American cable channels, but you can't on prime-time BBC1."

Um, really? Isn't the UK supposed to be much more liberal when it comes to nudity on television in comparison to the U.S.? Hmm, seems a little shady and possibly homophobic. Let's hope not!

Well, in the meantime, look at the pretty pictures of John and his co-star below!

    HOT motherfuckers!!!! yes baby!!

Seriously you see "gay" and immediately you go "Oh this must means they're homophobic!"
In the US it's on CABLE. Like Showtime or HBO don't show racy sex scenes? Torchwood has children audience as well as older audience in the UK. Plus it moved from BBC3 to BBC1 = less freedom. It has nothing to do with it being a gay sex scene. It's a sew scene period.

Gosh these ignorant comments "Isn't the UK supposed to be much more liberal when it comes to nudity on television in comparison to the U.S.?" really pisses me off. Don't you watch True Blood? Isn't that on CABLE in the US?

And I'll know this will never be read, I just needed to get it out once.

The episode had not aired in the US yet. It will only air stateside because its on Starz, a premium channel. BBC One is equivalent to our normal primetime channels. It wouldn't air on a regular channel here either. I'm glad I have Starz. :D

  4. 4

I was gonna say that I have watched both episodes that have aired in the US and I haven't seen this part in anyone of those. To be honest I thought they were going to take away the fact that Captain Jack will sleep with anything as long as its good looking. The only reason I say this is because That means he would be having sex with men on the show and usually American Television never shows this kind of thing, but luckily it aired on premium cable so they aren't taking anything away. which is great!

  5. 5

In England, at least, Torchwood is part of the whole Dr. Who franchise. Its prime time family fare. Full throttle nude sex scenes - gay or straight - arent the norm. The beeb isnt being homophobic.

  6. 6

Um. That scene looks INSANELY FREAKIN' GRAPHIC. I seriously doubt the fact that their both guys is the issue..

Compared to previous series of Torchwood, this level of nudity/ sexual content is far more explicit! Normally the BBC reserve the steamy stuff for shows that appear on bbc3 or 4 or a late night film on bbc1 or 2. It's real naive for you to start pulling the homophobia card. I'm not going to say the British media is leaps and bounds ahead of anywhere else because it isn't. Doctor Who has been a very successful show for the BBC and so moving Torchwood to BBC1 would always see a softer approach to the new episodes, regardless of them being aired after the watershed. Basically i'm sure this has far more to do with brand stability, general target demographics and network precident than anything remotely homophobic. Though ofcom would probably receive thousands of complaints over this from parents who thought this would be in line with the last series and let their kids watch.

this is one of the most disgusting things, how disgusting is 2 guys having sex… Perez you see gay and you blog about it no matter what it is about…

  10. 10

Re: highway703 – I have a feeling what you do would be disgusting to many…who cares…girls and girls, guys and guys….girls with guys….Live and let live…don't be so judgemental and closed-minded.

  11. 11

I don't think this is a case of homophobia. The BBC is comparable to our network television (ABC, CBS, NBC, etc). Torchwood airs on Starz in the US, which is a premium cable channel like HBO or Showtime. Unless British network television regularly shows straight sex scenes on a regular basis, this isn't an issue of homophobia, it's a difference between network and premium cable television and what can be shown.

I'm from the UK and I feel I need to straighten a few things up here. Firstly
Torchwood Is NOT a family programme and never was. It does and has always
gone out after the 9 o'clock watershed. If parents allow children to watch
this then they are wrong. Torchwood has had violence, flayed bodies and
children being killed on screen, THAT is NOT a family programme!

BBC One have and do show sex after the watershed, both straight and
lesbian..but they seem to lose their bottle with regards to gay sex! Sex is
sex no matter what! I think the only reasone they show lesbian sex half the
time is because some twisted hetro guys get off on it!!! Sad sods!

The use the excuse that Jack is seen as a hero amongst children and they're
worried they may see this…Maybe they should have thought of that when they
showed Jack kill his own grandson in a VERY violent manner!

I would like to add that I am a lesbian myself so don't get off watching men
and women or men and men having sex! But that doesn't give the BBC the right
to tell me what I can and cannot watch!

Also some here main stream TV in UK are like they are in the US a d don't
show such things! Ever seen RTDs Queer As Folk! Graphic gay sex shown on
mainstream TV! Channel 4 to be exact! It's JUST the BBC who lack gonnads!

  13. 13

that ass belongs to the new cast member of the show Nikita, Dillon Casey. IMDB him, he's hot

  14. 14

When will you get it through your thick head?!?! He's not bisexual! Jack is OMNISEXUAL!

  15. 15

Re: PoppingLola – Parents are wrong to show Torchwood to young children but from the general look of these stills, it is a far cry from what the show has aired before. I suspect the makers have been criticised for the content before and two naked people going at it probably isn't going to help ratings! Personally I don't see how a sex scene can enrich a storyline as Barrowman claims but i'll track it down anyway so I have a decent idea. BBC tend to shy away from showing anything remotely sexy, this is true. I do think it's down to a lack of balls as opposed to homophobia, though. If you look at the online news articles on this most of them seem to indicate that the BBC is very aware of how fickle an audience can be.

  16. 16

I just think it's HILARIOUS that everyone's big concern was that having the US involved with the production would "water down" Torchwood's raunchy heart, but no - it was the BBC, it's parent that was the problem all along.

And thank you Perez, for posting those yummy pics. HAWT.

  17. 17

    Re: caffeinatedangel

You're a retard. BBC 1 is a 'standard' channel in basic cable packages in the UK. Starz is a premium. If they watered down True Blood to show on a family friendly channel like ABC or NBC would it be considered homophobia? No its just common sense that you don't show graphic details on basic cable during hours where most be are awake.

Enough with this 'homophobia' bs Mario. Maybe you should learn what the fuck you are talking about first.

  18. 18

Capt. Jack isn't bisexual by the way, he's omnisexual. This means, in the words of John Barrowman, he will do anything with a hole!

  19. 19

Straight or gay sex scenes like this should not be aired on any prime time show. It's not about homophobia, it's about decency.

  20. 20

You've been reading the daily mail again havent you? how about reading the actual guidelines on whats allowed pre and post watershed. The BBC is well known for being brave enough to put gay characters front and centre of major shows - like Torchwood. Its pretty damn rude to accuse this country of being homophobic. WE have had civil unions here for years WE have it written in law that people cannot be discriminated against for their sexuality - YOUR country does not.

  21. 21

it's not homophobic. With have this thing called a watershed in england which means nothing 'racy', 'sexy' or swearing can be on the main TV channels before 9 o'clock. Small kids watch this show and you can let the see this sort of stuff, gay or straight, when they're still 6 or 7.

  22. 22

No way are the BBC being homophobic. They've stated right from the off that Captain Jack is omnisexual and embraced that aspect of his character, but in the U.S. Doctor Who (the family series of which the show is a spinoff) has only just started to really establish a wide fanbase, where as next year in the U.K. it's the show's 50th anniversary. Consequently the BBC have to be a lot more careful about what they air in Torchwood because of the family orientation and huge following of Doctor Who who watch Torchwood.

Also, to appeal to US fans Torchwood has a longer viewing time in the U.S. than the U.K. so obviously some things are going to get cut.

  23. 23

Re: chabbie – wrong, its comes on after the watershed and it is not a family show. obviously youve never watched it

  24. 24

BBC 1 are the the least liberal prime time TV channel in my opinion , so I'm not surprised. DOesn't matter if its a gay scene. If it where on BBC 3 ITV2 or even Channel 4 which seem to be very liberal . This would have been shown no propblem so no you idiot it's not a homophobic thing which you seem to like to yell out constantly.

  25. 25

that 3rd shot is really f*cking HOT.

  26. 26

Wow, it has nothing to do with the fact that it's gay. Unlike America, Britain have joined the modern world and accepted it! It's more due to poor scheduling by the BBC (if there are scenes unsuitable to be shown at 9pm, don't air it at 9pm)

  27. 27

UK channel = BBC1 US channel = some channel you pay for…
It will probably be in it on the BBC3 repeats.

  28. 28

It would be shown at 10pm but for some reason I think it was put on at 9. And Channel 4 would show it and not give a fuck…

  29. 29

Re: jade_iris – Spoken like a true Torchwood fan! =)

  30. 30

It's not the sex or the nudity its the actual act bewteen these two men which would make the majority of the population violently sick. Congrats to the BBC for not bowing to the gay mafia which is very much in fashion at the moment.

  31. 31

gay scenes shouldnt be on TV point blankkkk…its disturbing especially to us who have childern.

  32. fiona says – reply to this

    32

Seriously, put it on the gay or porn channels, where no one has to be surprised by the programming.
I personally do not need to see this, it doesn't do it for me at all.

  33. 33

    my god that was hot

  34. 34

I live in Canada and have no say in either the UK or the U.S. opinion, but I'm glad that a show is finally showing two consenting adults (straight, gay, whatever,…) enjoying themselves. Oh wait, straight sex scenes have aired on TV and in films for years.
    There are no victims here.

  35. 35

I'm sure if this were a female and a male sex scene, then it wouldn't be considered "raunchy"
