London Charges President Obama Fine For Traffic Congestion

| Filed under: AnglophiliaLegal MattersPolitikBarack Obama

President Obama has a fee to pay in London and they’re serious about him paying up.

The President’s motorcade has been fined for not paying a congestion charge in London.

Apparently Mayor Boris Johnson wants Obama to pay a $16 congestion charge involving his security vehicle “The Beast” as well as other cars in his motorcade.

According to Johnson:

"Our roads were not closed during the President's visit so his motorcade will pay. 'The Beast' will pay the charge, I'm delighted to say. We didn't charge the pope when he was here because all the roads were closed, so the popemobile was exempt. But this was different."

And since the US didn’t pay up in time, they now face a $200 fine.

But the US isn’t buying it with The American Embassy stating they were “wholly in accordance" with the 1960 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations treaty which apparently "prohibits the imposition of this sort of tax on diplomatic missions."

Thats strange. Usually foreigners get everything for free in the UK and with various benefits thrown in! Its usually just the poor workers who get charged for everthing.

Just pay it and make the UK look more petty than they already do for requesting it in the first place…

  4. 4

Oh for God sake…pay the damn thing. Umm, by the way? What did we charge Kate and William for the congestion they caused? Yeah, that's what I thought…NOTHING!! Diplomatic courtesy. Think that's why we got away from the brits in the first place.

don't pay it obama…kick the can down the road and make your kids pay it later.

  6. 6

Oh man 16 dollars you have gotta be kidding? PETTY MUCH London? After all the shit we do for you. Oh hell pay it alright but you better be prepared for the reproductions.Morons.

  7. 7

Have the British paid us for the intelligence and support that helped them defeat Argentina during the Falklands campaign?

Boris Johnson is a fool. The President's motorcade is exempt.

Re: MB927 – Everyone has to pay the London Congestion charge. A presidential motorcade shouldn't be an exception. It's not petty at all, and it's not the UK asking for the fee - it's the City of London.

  9. 9

HaHa! FINALLY somewhere where he isn't ABOVE the law, because he sure is in the states!

  10. 10

The bill is being charged to the US embassy, not directly to Obama. Embassies should pay the charges, every other Londoner has to. The total bill across several petty embassies who refuse to pay for what they are using is £51 million, outrageous!

  11. 11

Hahaha! oh this is brilliant, way to go Boris.

  12. 12

the issue of whether the charge is a tax or not has been being asked for a long time and the american embassy pushing the issue might mean its finally decided - thats the point of all this. Either Boris is using the opportunity to decide this in the most high profile way he can manage or this was arranged in advance with the embassy as some kind of publicity stunt.

Re: Gimmeabreak711 – Do you mean REPERCUSSIONS? Now who's the moron? Every vehicle that passes through or around London has to pay that fee, it is the law. Obama was in a vehicle. He is not above said law. When you visit a country, you respect the laws of that country. There are no two ways about it.

  14. 14

Obama's just waiting to raise taxes on the wealthy here so that he can use the excuse that he can't afford to pay the fine

  15. 15

The UK is in debt at least this isn't coming out of college tuition.

  16. 16

Re: caroaber – Why is it exempt. Even the Royal Family pay congestion charges!

  17. 17

Thats the standard charge for driving in central London! Why should he be excluded?

  18. 18

I hate to sound stupid, but these comments are throwing me off. Are yall saying you have to pay $16 to just drive in London or pay $16 if you start congestion?

Either way, I see both sides of the story. London shouldn't let someone be exempt from their law even if they are a leader of another country, but at the same time they should have some curtesy to Obama and just waive the fee. So it's kind of a tough situation.

I feel like they are trying to make a point with this whole situation, but in the end it's probably just going to back fire and either make London look bad for charging or America look bad for not paying.

Re: asdfg1 – If you drive in certain areas of london in peak times you have to pay a congestion charge, because it gets so busy and all the fumes and stuff. everyone has to pay it, its not that he caused congestion, its just what the charge is called

  20. 20

We should have charged the royal family when the prince and his new bride came to the United States.. what a bunch of losers!!

  21. 21

Re: Gimmeabreak711 – What do you for London exactly? And I think you mean repercussions not reproductions……

  22. 22

Re: Tink66 – the city of london has a standard congestion charge that everyone has to pay to prevent too much traffic. as far as im aware, LA does not have anything like that so william and kate shouldnt pay anything. typical americans thinking that the world sucks their dick and they can do anything they want…

  23. 23

Everyone has to pay the charge (except residents within the area who recieve 90% discount, and blue badge holders who don't have to pay) so why the fk should he not pay? Also regarding people bringing up help for past wars, THE UK IS PAYING FOR THOSE FAVOURS!!! We pay £40billion interest payments every year as well as paying the actual debt, that's the main reason why The UK has a national debt of over £1TRILLION!!! Not because of the recession.

'Oh hell pay it alright but you better be prepared for the reproductions.Morons.'

I think you may mean 'repercussions'. Just a helpful hint from a 'moronic' Londoner.

In London, embassies have amassed approximately £28 million in unpaid charges as of 2009, with the American embassy comprising approximately £3 million and the Russian, German and Japanese missions each have around £2 million of outstanding fines.

Heck, I would pay the sixteen bucks for Obama. The other cars can pay for themselves.
Nice, gracious hosts toward a visiting statesman. Pffft.

  26. 26

I don't care if everyone does pay this fee in London. Obama is the head of the US. This just makes London's mayor look like an Ass. I say pay the bill announce it on TV and show what a jerk this man is being. Let's charge William and Kate for coming here I'm sure the cause a few traffic delays… how would they like that? ASSHOLES…

  27. 27

Re: MRSMOMOA – Boris Johnson most definitely is an ass, yes. BUT being head of the USA, Obama should realise the congestion charges are there to help relieve pollution and he should, therefore be willing to pay. If he paid he would be advocating "green" living which is probably what Boris was trying to do

  28. @v@ says – reply to this

Well, there's congestion somewhere, anyway, because this fee sounds full of it.
    Poor Londoners.
