Philadelphia Vs. People Who Text While Walking

philadelphia vs people who text while walking

Might be time to invest in some bluetooth headsets!

Starting next month, officials in Philadelphia, PA will put more of an effort into enforcing their Give Respect, Get Respect program, which is "aimed at reining in bad behavior by motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians in Center City."

Along with drivers/bikers who don't follow the rules of the road, Philadelphia police will be targeting people who are texting while walking without looking ahead of themselves.

Here's what the city had to say about it in a statement:

"Pedestrians may be reminded to be more aware of their surroundings; however, there are no citations issued by the PPD (Philadelphia Police Department) for texting while walking. If a Philadelphia police officer observes a driver, cyclist or pedestrian participating in any kind of potentially dangerous behavior, the officer will remind them to be careful."

Sounds like an ambitious plan by Philadelphia. Guess we'll see if pedestrians are able to walk around the city without sending out crucial messages to friends like "c u soon" or "k."

Do U text while walking? Would U be able to walk without constantly sending messages on your phone?

Most fucking annoying trend, people texting and walking like zombies. Idiots getting in the way at the mall, on the streets, in the parks. Fuck!

Hmmm. Maybe we should also put in a program called "stop chewing with your mouth open, remember to say please and thank you and generally, don't be an asshole."

  3. 3

Yes it is fucking annoying when some knob is texting and walking, but i think police should concentrate on catching real criminals, not some annoying dick walking slowly.

damn i wanted to be the first to comment on this one. well i just have to say is that the claus "without looking ahead" is gonna be the deal breaker for the prosecution if the defendant ever pushes it to go to trial, but again they will be going against the word of a cop, which is like going against god to the legal system and which case youre pretty much screwed if you pull your phone out to check the time.

The government seriously has nothing better to do than chase down people texting while walking & ticketing them?? This is just sad news. If someone is texting while walking & gets hit by a car or something like that, well it's their own fault now isn't it? They need to stop making these INSANE laws against cell phones!!

Recently there was a woman who was texting/walking and she was at the mall and walked right into a water fountain. Funny as hell. She is now sueing the mall for putting the fountain in the middle of the mall. My oh my, what has the world come to? If everyone had their phones taken away the hospitals would be full with ppl having a nervous breakdown and panic attacks. Ridiculous.

This is not really going to happen. Just a story…

  8. 8

I am so glad I don't live in a country where the police will tell me I can't text on my telephone while walking and where people get annoyed by seeing others text while walking. Mean spirited people…. Americans.

  9. 9

Nanny state…what's next?…assigning tickets for walking too fast or too slow or perhaps wreckless walking or walking while intoxicated. What other rules will Liberals create?

I live in Philly. This is FALSE. Do your homework. The MAYOR confirmed it a rumor.

Last semester I seen a girl walk into a utility pole. Seriously it does look zombie like and retarded.

  12. 12

That is an awesome idea! We have got to stop with this stupid texting everywhere stuff. Texting in the car (even with Oprah's "no texting contract" people are still stupidly doing this), texting while riding a bike, texting while running, and all sorts of things and causing tons of accidents both on and off the street. It is a public safety issue and it is about time someone did something!

  13. 13

actually, this is completely false. i live in philly and its simply a big rumor.

  14. 14

I live in philly and this has been on the news lately. I think it's a bit extreme and just be smart about it. Text and walk if you can keep up with the flow of the crowd without walking into things. This one woman yelled at me one time because I was just holding my phone in my hand as I got to the intersection the same time as she did. She was carrying a HUGE painting, so I stopped to let her pass, and she had the audacity to yell at me? Her giant-*ss painting was more of a nuisance than me just holding my cell phone. If I wanted to be a true philadelphian, I would have told her to f*ck off but I didn't. I don't think it's right for the police to dictate to us what we can do while we're walking. If someone wants to be an idiot and get hit by a car bc they're texting and not paying attention to the traffic, that's their own fault.

Throw in a cavity search too,(right there on the spot) that'll teach-em………

  16. 16

now if only they'd do that in NYC - trust me, they'd make enough $$ to cut the deficit…

  17. 17

I'm probably the only one that does this, but I actually move to the side, stop and text. People who don't pay attention are fucking annoying
