New Zealand Has Zero Tolerance For Crazy Baby Names!

| Filed under: Baby BlabberWacky, Tacky & True

So, if you want to name your kid a number, fruit or a planet, we'd stick close to America.

New Zealand has but a ban out on baby names they deem too weird. The country’s Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages has decided to get more invovled in the decision making process of what NZ's citizens can name their tykes. A list of forbidden names for kids has been released (and is growing), including such nom de plumes as Lucifer, Duke, Messia, Bishop, Baron, General, Judge, King, Knight and 89.

89? Really?! We could understand 69, but 89?! Who cares! LOLz.

Guess it's a good thing you live in elsewhere, right Gwyneth Paltrow, Victoria Beckham, Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie

What's so wrong with Victoria Bechkam's baby names? And Angelina's for that matter? Those names might be unconventional, but they're not abnormal. Also, I went to school with a kid named Duke. I always thought his name was bad ass. I met him in 1st grade and knew him up until high school ended, and I always loved that name.

Re: SadieG – i agree, i have always loved the name Duke! wasn't that the name of the Channing Tatum's character in 'She's the Man"?

Im with New Zealand on this one. What may seem unique or cute at birth usually sounds ridiculous by puberty.

  4. 4

    My dogs named Duke …

  5. 5

a "nom de plume" is a pen name……not a birth name…….so, are they banning birth names, pen names or all names? you fail again mario……….

I can understand banning the name Lucifer, but it seems like they're taking it a bit too far with other names. A parent should be allowed to name their child whatever they like, as long as they don't decide to pay homage to Hitler.

  7. 7

    I like it

What's wrong with the name Duke or Bishop?
I get wanting to try to deter people away from naming their child something stupid, but who is to say what is weird and what isn't?
It's not THEIR baby… so why should they have any say in what the name of the child should be?

is silly as i think this law is….(and honestly i don't live in NZ so who cares…) THIS IS NOT NEWS….this ban happened a while ago and was in the news sometime at the start of the year…..i guess there is a reason why i only come on this site a couple of times a week (it use to be a couple of times a day)….you really have just gone done hill…shame……please stick to what you know….report the gossip….be a tabloid……all this other crap is stupid…..

  10. 10

Let people name their children whatever they want. How ridiculous.

  11. 11

that's really stupid. People should be able to name their kids whatever they want.

  12. 12

    I thought Duke was a genuine name…

  13. 13

yeah what's wrong with "Duke"? kinda sucks to have kids there then

  14. 14

89 is a symbol mainly in the middle east that has to do with pimping and drugs

Lucifer? LOL Some parent out there named their child Lucifer?

  16. 16

i dont see the problem with the name Duke….or bishop.

  17. 17

wow! are you sure about this, i am from new zealand and i havnt heard about it. i know someone here who named their son duke, i think its ridiculous that name is for a dog!.
(and i am not one of those people that like boring names either)

  18. 18

i have an unusual name i will be giving my daughter, i might actually be slightly worried after hearing this but i will be living in america by then so thats lucky!.

  19. 19

What's wrong with the name Duke? Seriously? Is it a baby or a dog? Enough said.

Duke, Bishop, Baron, King, Knight etc are deemed too close to titles. We're still part of the Commonwealth in NZ - we have titled citizens (Lady xxx, Sir xxx, Dame xxx etc) so names based on the titles of the Peers of the English Realm are a no go. That's why ;)

    And this is Celebrity News?
    I'm another lost member………………………………

  22. 22

I'm in N.Z and a parent and i think it is good, some people are just idiots. A while back some people wanted to name their twins "Fish" and "Chips". How mean is that!?

  23. 23

im from NZ i don think 69 a gud idea either prez, i think its partly because someone called their kid 4real

  24. 24

Wait So I cant name my kid Lady Gaga?

In NZ at least. In America it's just a matter of time!!!!!
