Check Out Ricky Gervais' Rejected Cover Photo For Rolling Stone!

Damn! Talk about controversial!

Check out this pretty eyebrow-raising photo taken of Ricky Gervais by Nadav Kander for a potential cover of Rolling Stone, which was ultimately left abandoned because of its pretty blatant religious implications (above)!

Ricky explains:

"To be fair, when I described it to them over the phone weeks before the shoot they said they'd like an alternative, if I wanted a front cover…They definitely would have gone with the alternative, but since I didn't give them one they went with Rihanna."

Ha! Can't say we blame them, given what we could imagine to be A LOT of backlash from many!

Too it's probably going to get just as much exposure now as it would have if it DID make the cut!

What do U think?? Do U find this pic offensive?

so christians are alowed to spew there religious shit on everyone but atheists arnt even alowed to write the word on them. be proud to be an atheist. its the only religion that makes any sense logically.

  2. 2

It's only offensive in the US. I can't find any reason why this photo would be problematic.
    I think it's bloody brilliant

  3. 3

Never mind the religious connotations, I'd reject it for the hideous pasty middle-aged torso, the baggy high pants, the lack of imagination …

  4. tasha says – reply to this

"I would rather live my life as if there is a God, and die to find out there isn't, than live my life as if there isn't, and die to find out there is." Good luck to those who don't believe.

  5. 5

yeah I really don't see a problem with this..I'm an athiest and I respect other peoples religons so why can't you respect ours? people are so hypocritical. If gaga and madonna can be on a cross why can't this dude be on a microphone?

  6. 6

as a proud athiest i find it disrespectful to mock other people's religion by imitating jesus on the cross. i don't like my beliefs (or lack of…) being disrespected so why do it to others?

  7. 7

Rolling Stone is a Illuminati Satanic rag…the Atheist's out there better get some sort of spiritual base your going to need it.

  8. 8

Not offensive in the least. I agree with him 100%. Re: T.E.A.M.J.O.L.I.E – Exactly!

  9. 9

The only thing offensive about this photo are the mom jeans.
Re: T.E.A.M.J.O.L.I.E – Atheism is not a religion - that's the whole point of being an atheist. It shouldn't be an 'ism' either. 'ism' implies a set of believes, but atheists don't have a common set of beliefs, we simply don't believe in gods.

  10. 10

Tolerance would suggest that you try to peaceful with people no matter what they believe. I think that's all rolling stone is doing by refusing to use this as the cover of their magazine, which is widely circulated to many people of all sorts of religious beliefs.

Just because you have prejudices doesn't mean it should be manifested on the cover of a magazine, in your comments on perezhilton, or in a bunch of bombs strapped to your chest.

The only way to keep the peace is to be respectful of what people believe no matter what.

  11. 11

Not exactly out-of-the box. RS has been doing crucifixion themed covers forever, including one with Howard Stern in the 90's (IIRC) — they even repeated the theme in another Stern cover shoot years later.

  12. 12

Re: lalaaly55 – I see your point, but it would be interesting to know Ricky's thoughts on this before considering it disrespectful.

  13. 13

YAWN! The Jesus cross and crown of thorns thing is soooooo 1989 Madonna, and he has a nasty body on top of that. It's not controversial, Perez, it's an old, worn-out technique to generate shock value that fails miserably.

  14. 14

Re: tasha – I would rather live a life of morality on my own free will and kindness than because I think there is something in it for me in the end. Christianity is a selfish religion dedicated to a selfish god.

"A religion true to its nature must also be concerned about man's social conditions…Any religion that professes to be concerned with the souls of men and is not concerned with the slums that damn them, the economic conditions that strangle them, and the social conditions that cripple them is a dry-as-dust religion."

I can quote stuff too. :)

  15. 15

made me laugh… I like it lol

  16. 16

Kayne had a thorn crown on the cover of RS. I think Ricky looks pretty good (body wise) those jeans are pretty strange.

  17. 17

Re: AshleyDuh – You obviously don't know anything about Christ's teachings and are confusing man-established religion with those teachings. The Christian Taliban/Immoral Majority are the least Christ-like assholes that walk the earth and, like generations before them, pervert the religion to control the followers, while reaping in money and power.

  18. 18

This is NOT offensive in the least….it's called freedom of speech. It is funny and fun. LOVE IT!!!!!!

  19. 19

Re: T.E.A.M.J.O.L.I.E – really, so believing that something can come from nothing is logical? Not even science has been able to prove that!…so much for your logic lolzzzz

  20. 20

I love it, and it's a shame they were too chicken-shit to go with it. If the religious can have their images on covers of magazines, there's no reason athiests can't do the same. EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL!!!
Right, Perez? You DO support this photo, don't you?

  21. 21

jack nicholson already did this shit. look him up with the word atheist on his chest.

  22. 22

Re: Dyna_Chaal – its stupid! It's a classic publicity stunt and ploy for attention…sex and anti-religious sentiment…their is nothing new under the son, all are recycled ideas and this one is pretty shameful!

  23. 23

Re: Nikkicat85 – it is not hypocritical to ask for some respect…that you do not mock my beliefs as this man has done by holding the microphone like Jesus held the cross. This is very offensive, and deliberately so. Moreover, while I respect everyone's right to believe what they will without judgement from another, I will not sit here and pretend it is ok to do away with the word of God, Jesus and the Bible. All who do not believe and do not grasp to that the power of his holy name shall parish like the fools they are. That is the Truth! Because I love you I tell you this, it is only a fool who beleives something came from nothing or that humans are smart enough to even understand an ounce of all that is in this universe and beyond!

  24. 24

Ugh. Who cares? I'm Catholic, but I'm not offended. People are WAY too touchy.

  25. 25

Agreed….most offensive are the Dad jeans

  26. 26

So? He's an atheist like most normal people these days.

  27. 27

No, it's bloody brilliant and hilarious, but I'm also an atheist. I can understand Christians being upset over it and not seeing the humor. But that's just because we see things differently.

I find gay bashing to be particularly offensive, but if they are allowed to mock and harass entire demographics hiding behind the right to practice religion, then we can poke fun at their beliefs. The difference being that one group is not demonizing the other. (Not all Christians are gay bashers just like not all atheists bash religion. There's jerks in every group!)

  28. 28

It's only offensive its its uninspired and boring predictably and desperation to piss off those same catholics that Madonna went after with Like A Prayer, and Katy Perry and Lady "Thief" Gaga went after in Judas. Boring. Being desperate to shock isnt shocking. And Gervais looks like shit! WHo wants to look at a badly photoshopped and still fat hairy brit?? Even Perez takes a better picture.

  29. 29

Re: ccmyplaymate – Consider, my friend, that traditional religious imagery offends those who don't believe, yet who are bombarded with it nonetheless. You can't prove that there is a God, and you can't prove that Jesus even existed (the Bible is an unsubstantiated book, and doesn't count as evidence). It's true that they can't prove that God and Jesus DON'T exist, but your faith doesn't counteract their arguments. Teachings of a corrupt institution don't add up; you have to let them have what they believe in; it costs you nothing. But they are as offended by your religious imagery as you are something irreverent, and you can't cry "offense" without taking a long look at your religion's past. Peace; I mean you no harm.

  30. 30

  31. 31

Re: ccmyplaymate – what so you think some imaginary being made up everything. coz if you beileve that everything had to come from somewhere then where did god come from?? if find it funny how christians cant explain that. Re: rosebud99 – and not beileveing in god is a beilef in itslef . not necesserily a religion but a number or atheists beleve in the teachings of darwin. so its sort of a religion.

  32. 32

It has nothing to do with the word you ignorant idiot. It's the obvious visual of him mocking Jesus.

  33. 33

Re: ccmyplaymate – ..there is no need to start a religion debate here this will cause thousands of comments an uneeded drama..believe what you want I don't care but you don't need to push it on others..I have actually gone to church numerous of times with a friend in need and the people were nice but still not for me. I appreciate your thoughts and what I'm sure were attempted kind words.

  34. 34

Re: ccmyplaymate – and there is scientific proof to say that yes there was a jesus but he was not crucified. he was most likely stoned to death as was the custom in the day. im a historian and in those days the romans( who were the current rulers) only crucified top roman soldiers or nobles. they would never have crucified a peasant and he would have never been allowed to preach the way the bible says he did. they would stabbed him on the sport. its just logical. he was probably some mad man who just beileved he was the son of god. and judging by the fact that the story was written 50 years after it actually happened makes me think its all a load of bull shit. so to say that jesus carried his cross down the street is misguided.

  35. 35

Good for Ricky — THAT was perfect!

    and, anyway,
just having a pic of the hair on the back of his head would be more interesting than a full Rihanna — she's such a pseudo-act, she is borrring.

  36. 36

  37. 37

sooo, its cool to be anti religion (while using a religious image to get the message out) but being anti gay is an atrocity?! what a joke! the homos are being all touchy over anything gay and Christians are not allowed to get touchy over this and stand up?

  38. 38

I happen to be a believer in God and I am fine with this photo. Everyone is allowed to have their beliefs and I don't see why people need to be patronized.

Re: T.E.A.M.J.O.L.I.E – Are you mental? Atheism is in NO WAY religion.

  39. 39

Re: jay_ay_dee_e – You are right. To be an atheist is by no means a religion. The definition of religion is the belief and worship of a deity. Atheists simply do not believe in gods, other than that, what they do believe in can range from something quite conservative to complete nihilism.

  40. 40

I do not push my beliefs on others….making fun of other's beliefs is just not cool.

  41. 41

As a fellow Atheist, I love this. I get offended by peoples daily bible quotes, prayers and that churches are tax free when clearly we are supposed to be a country of separation of church and state.

  42. 42

Re: lalaaly55 – i could not agree more.

  43. 43

This whole thing is absolutely hilarious…it's not controversial..it's just funny.

  44. 44

Re: T.E.A.M.J.O.L.I.E – Yeah, Believe in nothing, pffftt hggmmm.
You couldn't even be a member of a Masonic Lodge with your belief system.

  45. 45

well, now I don't feel so alone, thanks Ricky… religious people are ridiculously sensitive

  46. 46

    Re: tasha – which god?

  47. 47

    Re: ccmyplaymate – retard

  48. ick says – reply to this

  49. 49

??? Why the hell is this offensive.

Its only contravertial due to the small minded nature of most Americans, "god" forbid he not be Christian.

If he did this in Europe they would tell him they needed something edgier, no-one would bat an eyelid.

    In the

  50. 50

You do not have to believe in God to live a good life. Morals and values exist without religion.

I have always thought if I just claimed to believe in god and only be a good person so I had my butt covered, god would actually see through it. Essentially he knows the true feelings in your heart, whether you truly believe.

  51. 51

I'm more offended by his "mom" jeans

  52. 52

Re: tasha – So then, in other words, believe in a "god" just in case there IS one, when we die? Hardly seems like one has a deep love for their "god" and their religion, if they are just going through the motions, you know, just in case there IS a god, so they can get into heaven. Here is the best example of the lack of logic in believing in god, as told by my grandfather, who is now deceased, and most certainly is NOT looking up OR down on us, as I type this: An atheist is walking down the street, and a "christian" kills him. The atheist goes straight to hell for not believing. The killer, who repents, goes to heaven when he dies, JUST because he believes. Now really, what sense does that make? And if "god" loves his children and created us, why would he send any of one us into a torturous hell to burn and suffer endlessly for eternity? Seems kinda harsh punishment, coming from gentle Jesus and/or "god", our "father".

  53. 53

Re: fefe fancypants – Very well said, could not agree more!! Mixing church and state, not only was supposed to NOT happen hundreds of years ago; it is still HERE and going strong! PLEASE! A President, namely George Bush, "talking" to god, and addressing our nation with the crap that "god" told him to "attack Iraq"??? HTF does this stuff even happen, now that we have science to prove evolution, and logic and common sense to prove that there is no god?? The bible was written by sheep herders thousands of years ago, yet modern day, seemingly intelligent people, STILL believe that the stuff in it is real. Mind boggling!

  54. 54

It can be offensive in America only, what a bunch of hypocrites.

  55. 55

Re: AshleyDuh – I agree. I live a moral life - I don't lie, cheat or steal - and I don't need religion or God to guide me. If someone needs religion to get them through life, then that's their choice, but I have a very happy, fulfilling life without it. Atheists aren't amoral - we're simply educated people who choose to believe in reason over archaic beliefs.
Re: ccmyplaymate – You're clearly not well-informed when it comes to science, otherwise you wouldn't think science believes "something came from nothing". Your religious images offend me - Jesus is always portrayed as a white man. Now THAT is offensive.
Re: anjakin – Not true. An image like this would offend Catholics, and nearly all countries south of the US are incredibly religious. Actually do some reading on world religion and you'll find that America isn't the only country where the majority of its population is Christian.

  56. 56

Re: MikelJoshua – that's not Jack Nicholson! That's another shot of Ricky Gervais from the same shoot - but he does look a little like Jack Nicholson in it…

  57. 57

Re: La Garse – Religion has been used to forward individual interests…the belief system of Christianity or the belief in God or Jesus is not the problem. People throughout history have appealed to various things to forward their own interests and religion is but one of those things…so don't point the finger at the institution rather the individuals who've perverted the word to suit their own interests whether that be capitalism, murder, hate etc… none of these things are supported in the Bible or convict my "religious past" as you stated!

  58. 58

It's an awesome photo and too bad they felt ridiculous America couldn't handle it.

  59. 59

Re: T.E.A.M.J.O.L.I.E – how is a historian's probable perspective of how Jesus lived his life and was crucified equal to inconclusive proof that it was so??? All it is is speculation that a book written more close in time to the actual events is false in some respect or another. That isn't science but theory and speculation.

  60. 60

Re: TheMrsBradPitt – looool how very eloquent of you! simply put calling someone a retard is incredibly offensive. Not to mention u have absolutely no idea who I am, my station in life, the number of degrees I have under my belt etc… so don't belittle people that's not what this is about. I respect all peoples right to believe in what they so choose but will always tell u my truth and don't shy away from that. I think if we can all respectfully state our beliefs their should be no anger or war but instead a simple disagreement.

  61. 61

Re: ccmyplaymate – actually it is science. its a fact that in those days the romans only crucified romans who were high up in the class system. peasants were stoned to death or stabbed on the spot. thats a fact not theory. and the book was written 50 years after the events happened by people who probably wernt even alive when it happened because people rarely lived past the age of 30 in those days. jesus was a peasant. it is impossible that he would have been given an honourable death such as crucification. and he wasnt a roman either and they only crucified romans. im sorry that your misguided narrow mind only sees what a made up book tells you but sorry to tell you that most of it is lies and the rest is a twist on
    the truth.

  62. 62

Re: Serena Loves Mario – loool are you assuming that I believe Jesus is White? hunny you are sorely mistaken…those are pagan common day images of what Jesus was and is no where in the Bible is he described as a White person so I don't believe that that is so…pick up a Bible and decipher for yourself what God and/or Jesus looks like. U won't find any descriptions of a White man there. As a researcher, I resent being told that I know nothing about science, I know it very well because I do it!

  63. 63

Re: T.E.A.M.J.O.L.I.E – I'm narrow minded? This coming from someone who just spewed one perspective of the truth and is hammering it down my throat as the only possible truth? u are calling me narrow minded??? I think u need to check yourself, look in the mirror and see your own hypocrisies…this is what I mean, believer or non believer human beings are walking contradictions.

  64. 64

he couldve gone with better pants

  65. 65

I must say that is weird you have to put a specific religion down to show your love of a different religion or ideals. I mean you don't see christians pissing on a book called atheism 101. It's just kinda weird.

  66. 66

So Rolling Stone has no problem putting very young teenage girls in their underwear on the cover of the mag, but not this? The hell?

  67. 67

    Sweet! Like Jesus, like Ricky.

  68. 68

Re: starlighht – exactly! believe what u want to but why must you insult someone elses beliefs to make your point???

  69. 69

Re: ccmyplaymate – I have read the Bible, and I never once said that the Bible claims Jesus was a white man, did I? You said this image was offensive, so I responded by saying I was offended by the ignorant Christians who depict Jesus as a white man. There's nothing pagan about those images and you clearly don't even know the meaning of the word "pagan". I'm highly educated when it comes to science, I have a master's in physics, so don't be condescending towards me and think I know nothing.

  70. 70

Despite the bad jeans, I think Ricky is looking HOT! And no, I'm not offended by the photo. I think it's clever. I'm all for clever.

  71. 71

what people do to stay in the news…scratch my head…thats no even art

  72. 72

Re: ccmyplaymate – The belief system is a problem is the system is founded on lies. I agree that religion has been used by individuals to further their own ends, and that's a deplorable thing. The christian faith has a long history of discrimination, bigotry, aggression, murder, and hypocrisy, just to name a few charming traits. There ARE good christians out there, but it's distinctly possible that they've been sold a bill of goods that has no truth or merit. And while you find the Gervais photo to be offensive, consider the religious imagery that atheists are bombarded with on a very regular basis. Their sensibilities should be as important to you as your own are and deserve the consideration you're wanting for your own. And that's really my sole point.

  73. 73

The guy looks like a loser. Who is he?

  74. kosh says – reply to this

It seems to me that everyone has forgotten the literal interpretation of KANYE WEST as Jesus Christ ON ROLLING STONE magazine in 2006 or so. He is a hard core Christian. Everyone is so uptight.

  75. 75

Re: ccmyplaymate – You always seem to pass off your anger as love - I for one am not buying it

  76. 76

Re: Serena Loves Mario – The person you are responding to is always like this - extremely arrogant and all about a religon he or she clearly doesn't understand
everyone is undereducated according to fountain of knowledge

  77. 77

it's images like this that give athiests like me a bad name. we keep saying we want tolerance and acceptance from others but how can we expect that when we blatantly mock their beliefs? it makes athiests look like arrogant ass holes. please do not judge us all by this picture.

  78. 78

a picture of Jesus getting buttfucked by the cross would be much more controversial than this

  79. 79

I would not have found it offensive if this pose was not mocking another religion. Atheists should be free to be open and communicate their beliefs, please no trashing someone else's belief.

  80. 80

    So many double standards…
No art should ever be censored due to religion, we don't live in a theocracy…

  81. 81

Re: ccmyplaymate – science and facts dont lie . you beileve what you want to beileve but when you are shown the truth you shy away and deny its real. these are not my beilefs . they are fact . i beileve in the scientifically proven . get your facts right.

  82. 82

Re: T.E.A.M.J.O.L.I.E – atheism is as much a religion as turning the tv off is a channel and bald is a hair colour seriously wtf you call yourself an atheist

  83. 83

I don't care about the religious implications. I just thank Jesus that Ricky lost weight before taking his shirt off.

  84. 84

    Re: Midnight Empress
"The Jesus cross and crown of thorns thing is soooooo 1989 Madonna"
Madonna isn't the first to do it, either, sister!

  85. 85

Re: Serena Loves Mario – loool you didn't really say anything in that banter but call me names so their is nothing to respond to!

  86. 86

Re: La Garse – Christianity may have been used to forward ruthless aims, but no more than other religions such as the muslim faith etc…U SAY their is no evidence for Christianity I got 3 words…THE SHROUD OF TOURIN!

  87. 87

  88. 88

Re: T.E.A.M.J.O.L.I.E – GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT science has also been shown to prove several aspects of the bible to be truth shroud of tourin anyone????

  89. 89

Re: ccmyplaymate – im not sayin the whole bible is false but i am saying that this particular aspect of it is. i have read the bible and find a lot of it to be inspiring and yes very true. but the rest is stories and in this part lies.
