Did Amy Winehouse Die Of Alcohol Withdrawal?

| Filed under: Amy WinehouseR.I.P.Sad Sad

amy winehouse may have died of alcohol withdrawal

Could this be what happened???

Last we heard from Amy Winehouse's parents, her father Mitch was making it clear that he does NOT think drugs were involved in her death.

Now, we're hearing that Amy's parents reportedly believe that their daughter died from alcohol withdrawal.

A source close to the family says that Amy's parents told her to gradually cut down on drinking, but she stopped drinking cold turkey, and her body couldn't handle it.

Here's what the source had to say about it:

"Abstinence gave her body such a fright, they thought it was eventually the cause of her death."

"He [Mitch] said doctors had told Amy to gradually reduce her intake of alcohol and to avoid binging at all costs. Amy told him she couldn't do that. It was all or nothing and she gave up completely. Mitch said the shock of giving up, after everything she had been through over a bad few years, was just too much for her to take."

Guess we'll find out exactly what happened soon, when those toxicology and histology reports come back.

So sad.

Whatever happened it almost certainly was a direct consequence of her substance abuse problems. There's nothing to be gain by trying to water it down. Wait for the toxicology results FFS.

  2. 2

Now kids this is why you should drink! You could die if you don't

Highly likely…the DTs will kill ya if not sedated and monitored in the ICU closely. What a loss of talent. :(

lol no matter what she died of drugs or alcohol somehow.

  6. 6

This is what I originally thought when I heard that she was drinking again and also having seizures. They've had to dry her out in the hospital a couple of times, and each time a person goes through alcohol withdrawal it becomes more and more pronounced and dangerous the next time they experience it. It is a phenomenon called "kindling". Alcohol is the only drug thats withdrawals can kill a person. And it does, a lot more often than people think it does.

  7. 7

who cares shes dead move on to the next druggie..start with loser lohan

Parents will believe what they want to believe…. I had worked in hospitals in the 90s who did not know how to treat DTs, the Doctors just let the PATIENTS WITHDRAW, Painful for the patient AND US, the nurses and our aides as some of them tried to beat the crap out of us… We might NEVER know why she DIED ON THAT DAY…. but it is because of her alcohol and drugs and her inability to give them up years ago… her body was damaged beyond repair probably YEARS AGO… and it was just a matter of time.. Granted, we see people that are out of control addicts all their lives but for some reason, they have bodies THAT JUST DON'T GIVE UP. Hers was not one of those, maybe her mind, her soul gave up that day too….

  9. 9

    The DTs can kill you.

  10. 10

She died of self-destructive compulsions brought on by the mental, emotional and spiritual damage done to her during her chaotic, dysfunctional and unstable childhood.

Amy used to always wear ballet slippers, right?

Well, there is a photo around when she was a little girl showing her wearing ballet slippers.

Anybody out there make a connection?

(This is not for the pigs who'll respond, "Jus cuz somebuddee wars slippers…"

  11. 11

Damn, that would be a cruel irony. She was a tiny fragile girl and she was winning her battle against her demons. It's very sad.

  12. 12

The lack of compassion among those of you who manage to overlook her death and decide to judge her because of her addictions is an embarrassment. Alcohol withdrawal can absolutely kill an alcoholic — sudden withdrawal of any central nervous system depressant will do the same thing. It must be lovely to consider yourself so perfect that picking on an addict - a dead addict - seems acceptable to you. Are you your favorite person? Can I have your autograph?

  13. 13

I thought the 12-Step religious cult's "Higher Power" was suppose to sprinkle the One-Day-at-a-Time Magic Dust on her…

It is a REAL HIGHER POWER isn't it?

I'm a friend of a representative of Universal Music Group in New York. Universal Music Group is the parent company of Island Records, based in the UK, that Amy Winehouse was signed to. He told me that a big meeting happened yesterday about Amy and what's the next move in her Posthumous career. The girl ain't been dead a week and they already making moves. (sad, but this is a business). The discussion came up about Amy's health and possible cause of death. An executive said that he's close to the family and they think she died of an withdrawal from drugs and alcohol which caused seizures. She was trying to go "cold turkey" for months and started to have seizures. Her body became dependent on alcohol and she was trying to fight it. She saw the concert from Serbia and was so embarrassed about it and was trying her hardest overcome that addiction and change the negative views about her. Weeks before her death, her health was on a roller-coaster which caused her to have around the care from doctors and nurses. She's be happy and cheerful, then depressed and so sick she couldn't walk, especially with the seizures. As a fan and being so close to the music industry, I'm so proud of her for trying to overcome her addictions on her on, but when in that severe of a state, you need help! She wasn't on drugs or had any alcohol at the time of death. Please continue to pray for her soul and her family.

  15. 15

Addiction is evil, unaddressed emotional pain is an open wound. Unless you were walking in her slippers, you have absolutely no idea of what lead to this point.

I hope that our treatment of dual addictions and behavioral issues improves. The treatment needs to evolve, to keep in synch with addicts behaviors. May not help her, but it may help our kids.

  16. 16

looks like there a bunch of doctors here who know how she died. wait for the results before judging and defaming her character

  17. 17

Re: twww – very credible point of view… and those of us in the treatment industry know how dangerous alcohol withdrawal truly is… next time an artist in pain goes through withdrawal, I hope the treatment they receive is a better match for the progression of their addiction.

  18. 18

Re: Robdawg – whether people agree or not her death has raised the topic of the treatment of addictions. I see a lot of that throughout these comments. It may be cold to the fact that Amy was a person, but is beneficial as a topic in our society.

  19. 19

Another 12-Step religious cult success story…

The 12-Step religious cult is not "FREE"; Amy spent hundreds of thousands on 12-Step religious cult treatment programs and EVERY ONE OF THEM FAILED HER!

  20. 20

That's like when your daughter dies at a gang bang from a BBC rupturing her intestines and then the parents saying she probably slipped on a wet floor and hit her head.

  21. 21

    Re: HILRAY
You go from thread to thread spewing poison. Want to tell us what is wrong in your life?
Maybe there is help and hope for you.

  22. 22

    It is very likely, RIP

  23. 23

i find that very unlikely. i have never heard of anyone dying from alcohol withdrawals and we have a huge problem with alcohol in our country. i have been through it myself and was a pathetic drunk for many years, i went cold turkey and nothing that bad happened to me.

  24. 24

Wouldn't know anything about this but if she did die from from this how sad..how sad that your body was so riddled with booze and drugs that when you stop drinking you die..either way she did it to herself..I feel bad for her parents and those close to her.

  25. 25

i hate how people act as if she wasn't important just because she drank and used drugs. it's not like she was evil, killed and ate children, or had sex with animals. she had a problem that was bigger than her, and it's really so sad. it seems like she was really trying to get better, but it was just too late. a shame really, my heart sinks a little everytime i see or hear these stuck up snobs say "who cares, she's dead, stupid junkie, move on to the next druggie, i can't wait for lindsay lohan to die." really, these people that say these hurtful things are the ones that people won't care if they die. amy had a heart, these people are just dark and mean. like you, HILRAY – .

  26. 26

by the way, i'd like to say, HBIC65 – i love you for what you just said.

  27. 27

GUESSING AND CONJECTURE IS STUPID AND USELESS
    .
    .
WHY NOT WAIT UNTIL THE TOXICOLOGY ETC. IS IN AND THE TRUTH IS FINALLY TOLD
    .
UNTIL THEN THERE SHOULD BE NOTHING TO SAY ON THE SUBJECT

  28. 28

    Re: paris knight
You clearly have no idea about TRUE alcohol addiction. Google is your friend. Research and learn. Plenty of people have died from alcohol withdrawal.

  29. 29

Re: rickraton – Yeah, same with Pams_triple_filled_silicone_breasts. All he//she does is sit here and bitch and bitch and BITCH about how "evil" the 12-step groups are on almost every addiction-related post now. Either they've never been to one, or they've worked one the wrong way. But anyhow, it's really disgusting when you see folks come on here and say negative things that you know they don't have any clue on. I mean, people have the right to say what they want, but it still sucks thaat they try and relay the wrong message.

And by the way, "Pam", you said that Amy spent hundred's of thousands on 12-step programs, when in fact the main 12-step programs like NA and AA are NON-PROFIT!… There's a bunch more i'd like to say to you, but you're obviously too sick to be able to ever understand. Good day.

  30. 30

Re: paris knight – Well, it's true. Look it up if you don't believe it.

  31. 31

Re: paris knight – It doesn't exist because it didn't happen to you?

One of the major complications of alcohol withdrawal are seizures. Read : Complications of Alcohol Withdrawal, Pathophysiological Insights by Drs. Trevisan, Boutros, Petrakis, and Krystal. It is one of the many, many publications written on this subject.

  32. 32

Enough already let this filthy skank rot in hell

  33. 33

Re: Manda756 – HAHA I love it. Perfect.

  34. 34

it breaks my heart to see her go. damn.
and i didnt even think that was possible

  35. 35

This is most likely what happened. If a person who is heavily dependent on alcohol suddenly stops drinking cold turkey, delirius tremens will start within 6 to 48 hours. It involves confusion, hallucinations, and seizures. If not medically treated these seizures can easily cause death. So sad. =( Especially since, if she was trying to quit drinking, she probably thought she was doing something that would be really good for her. =/

  36. 36

Re: PlayingTheAngel – Add me to your very long list of people you need to make amend to you DRY DRUNK!

  37. 37

………..Saying that 'her death was not from drugs' when she died from alcohol withdrawal is a complete contradiction. Her death happened because of alcohol withdrawal, alcohol is in fact a drug.

  38. 38

she was so beautiful without all of that crazy makeup she wore.

  39. 39

Re: paris knight – Wow, you are ignorant.

  40. 40

Re: daisygirl8706 – I thought this, too; however, she had all these body guards around her. In fact, one said he asked her to quiet down while playing the drums earlier that night. Wouldn't they have known if she was going through DTs? I'm willing to bet she had an extremely bad seizure in her sleep and died from it.

  41. 41

She should have been in hospital if she was withdrawing from alcohol then. I am sorry but her parents especially the father seemed to only care about her career and not her health.

  42. 42

If she truly did die as a result of alcohol withdrawal, there would be evidence of that during the autopsy, no? That was the impression I got when talking to a friend that is a medical examiner. There would be evidence of any fatal injury a convulsion would cause, and there'd also be evidence of excito-neurotoxicity. I really think what killed Amy is in her tox report. We unfortunately have to wait awhile, since they don't release that until many weeks after the tests were ran. The media should cool it on the different stories they're running about what might have caused her death. The need to wait for the result and then run the story with the actual truth.

  43. 43

You know, it's pretty sad when people judge the dead. Amy was a talented, creative, and bright individual who by the way, won 5 grammy's. What have those of you who are trash talking accomplished? Furthermore what does her sobriety or lack of have to do with "religious cults" or "12 step religious cult programs"? Ignorant statements made by uneducated, insensitive, and cruel people out there who should probably seek help for their own personal issues. You CAN absolutely die from alcohol withdraw, it is very dangerous! Google it, those of you who seem to think it's a joke. People that binge drink on a day to day basis for long periods of time an then stop, can die! Whether she was an addict or not, she did not deserve to die. No one deserves to die because of an addiction.

alcohol withdrawl was my first thought when I heard of her death. and yes, it is real. very very real. for those that profess to know better - get a clue. once your body is truly dependent on it, alcohol withdrawl can be hell, pure hell, and should definitely be monitored by a qualified physician. cold turkey is very dangerous. even gradual weaning can be dangerous. and that isn't 'what helps me sleep at night' - it's the facts. do some research. the woman was struggling to overcome her addictions. likely she just made a wrong choice about how to deal with this particular one.

  49. 49

Re: bre – I feel bad for being mean to Paris (I wrote that she was ingornat), it was her experience. I'm a recovering alcholic - probably drank 6-8 glasses of wine a night for quite some time. I stopped cold turkey and I didn't get the DTs…I think Paris is just relating to her own experience. So glad I stopped!

Re: Get A Brain – Maybe you need to get a brain. 12 step cults like AA are statistically shown to have lower success rates than alternative , or even "spontaneous remission" for alcoholism.
    *
And if you're wondering how this could be related to Amy Winehouse: 12-step cults have HIGHER MORTALITY RATES than other treatments and no treatment at all. Why? Because the focus on total abstinence - and the way this cult ingrains the belief that "you are POWERLESS over your DISEASE of alcoholism", increases the likelihood that those who do later drink will BINGE drink - either because being "powerless" gives them implicit permission to keep drinking, and/or they get into a cycle of guilt/shame/drinking. More and worse binge-drinking is obviously associated with higher death rates - whether by alcohol-poisoning, accident, liver cirrhosis, etc.
    *
Amy Winehouse's involvement in 12 step programs in the past would have significantly worsened her proclivity to BINGE DRINK, and adhere to an "all or nothing" approach to alcohol/drug consumption. All of which would increase her risk for death. So, yeah, totally relevant.

  51. 51

Oh come on. That's not the reason she died. It's sad this is how it ended for her instead of getting clean and healthy but "quitting cold turkey" didn't kill her.

Toxicology's not back yet. This is a grimm faerie tale.

  53. 53

Re: Harry Jenkins Fan Club – YAWN. AA works for a ton of people, and it's not a religious program…it's a spiritual program. Just because it didn't help you doesn't mean it doesn't work.

  54. 54

Re: Get A Brain – Don't pay attention to people who bash AA - it didn't work for them, so they decide to call it a cult. Everyone who's in AA knows the truth, that it's not a religious program. It works for millions of people, end of story.

  55. 55

Yes it is very possible. Also seen it on dr G a few times

  56. 56

perez hilton sucks! and he sucks a lot! … this is all positive media for Amy good for her too bad its all bs and perez hilton should b unemployed hes a waste of space … not to mention he takes up a lot ouch!

  57. 57

Re: Harry Jenkins Fan Club – I do have a brain, thank you for your concern though. I can see by your dry sarcasm and shallow sense regarding those in treatment programs you don't see fit that what you may be lacking is not a brain, but a heart. I don't really care one way or the other what you are lacking. Furthermore, I don't care what you think I am lacking. What I do care for are the millions of people that are addicted to drugs and alcohol. Having lost many people whom I loved deeply. 12 step programs like AA help a great deal of people, I have seen living proof. Also, religion and spirituality are two entirely different things. If you don't have one or the other don't bash others because they do. The world can do without insensitivity and negative input. Amy Winehouse was a TRUE talent. It's not about your opinions on what you think you know or what you want to press upon others. It's about the loss of a person, a human being, someones child, friend, love.
