R.I.P. Stealing Towels In Hotel Rooms

| Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & TrueR.I.P.Tech TalkBusiness Blitz

hotels to electronically protect their towels

Good news, Bed Bath & Beyond! People will need to buy towels once again, because they're not going to be able to steal them from hotel rooms anymore.

While it hasn't become a massive trend yet, hotels are starting to install electronic chips on their towels and linens in an effort to keep from them getting stolen by guests keep track of their inventory.

As far as the towels are concerned, they cost approximately $1 more than regular towels, but we SUPPOSE it's worth it if it means that they won't go missing.

The only downside - these towels and linens are dirty because the electronic chips can't be washed…

JK! They can absolutely be washed! Sounds like a creepy, 1984-like inneresting new piece of technology to us!

What do U think about this new security method?

How does this prevent towels from being stolen? Seems like you can cut off the tag/chip.

  3. 3

Theft is theft; I've never understood why people take towels from hotels.

Don't forget to bring a towel!

Huimor. The latest said attempt to increase those almighty left clicks. Wasn't funny and It ain't workin. You need a soul/personality to be funny.

  6. 6

Just how easy it will be to cut out the chip? People won't mind having a small hole in their towel if it's for free.

  7. 7

hotel towels are cheap…..why people steals them is beyond me, they get holes in them after 5 uses. microchipping them sounds ridiculous………might as well microchip the shampoo, conditioners and soap people don't use and take home too…….

I agree with miss_couture and dd. I guess I'll be more mindful when I try and use my five finger discount. Maybe if hotels weren't so expensive we wouldn't have to steal the towels to compensate. lol

I totally agree April 20th. I don't care for hotels cause I don't know if they changed the sheets or cleaned the room. I sure as hell don't want to take a towel especially considering that hundreds of people have already wiped their a** with it. No Thanks!

  10. 10

or they could just keep track of how many towels they give each guest and charge it to there credit card

  11. 11

Ok so, paying for these chips is cheaper that buying new towels……how? It just seems like a stupid idea. Why not just charge a person's credit card if there's a missing towel?

  12. 12

i never understood why people want to take the towels from hotels. i don't care if they get washed, you don't know what kind of people were using those towels before you. i won't even use them, i just take my own.

  13. 13

The only downside - these towels and linens are dirty because the electronic chips can't be washed…JK!

Oooohh hahahahaha so funny Perez….NOT. Seriously, you and your "writers" need to leave the comedy to someone else. Anyone else.

  14. 14

Can someone please explain the fascination with wanting a towel that thousands have also used on their "areas"?! They want it SO bad that they have to steal it?! Are you serious?! Ew.

It's pathetic that people steal from hotels to begin with. Apparently, it's enough of a loss to the bottom line that they are resorting to this measure. Stealing is on the rise. It was only a matter of time in this shitty economy. People complain about the price of a hotel room and don't factor in the loss the hotel takes from theft. Ditto with supermarkets, clothing stores, etc. If people didn't steal, the cost of goods for food and clothing would drop approximately 10%.

Re: dd – BEST AVATAR! Love it!

  17. 17

Why would anyone steal a towel from a hotel to begin with? Any towel is so filled with bacteria, semen, bodily fluids that even if you can't see the grossness, you know it's there. Ick. Gross. Some people are real pigs.

  18. 18

No idea why someone would steal a towel, never taken anything other than leftover shampoo. Most hotels give you separate beach or pool towels. Do ot get the thing about other peoples "cooties".

  19. 19

I would like to know why a subject like this is on a celebrity gossip website in the first place? Whoever thought of putting a chip in a towel is an idiot. Is it to hard for the housekeeping dept to take an inventory and if towels are missing charge the credit card they have on file. Just like when someone takes anything else. Theft is theft no matter what it is. File charges against them and maybe they won't do it again and eventually the thefts will stop if ppl know that the hotels mean business and will file theft charges. The End.

Hotel towels are made to be tough… they last a hell of a lot longer than regular towels that are available at department stores. Why? Because they are washed and dried numerous times… usually more than once a day. A normal towel would be destroyed after one day at a hotel. THIS IS WHY PEOPLE STEAL THEM! And hotel washer and dryers are not like the ones you have in your house, these are industrial appliances. They wash and dry at higher temperatures plus are usually pressed at a high temperature killing most bacteria and microorganisms. They actually work better at killing microorganisms than the washer/dryer combo in your house.

  21. 21

Re: buggadaboo – really??? Charge ppl for taking a towel or two??? Now thats using common sense… it'll cost more for the taxpayer in the long run than the hotel putting in chips!!!

  22. 22

    Its towels people!
