Happy 30th Birthday, MTV!

| Filed under: TV NewsMTVMusic MinuteMedia MinutePerezTVReality TV

We CANNOT believe that MTV has hit the big 3-0! Crazy!

Check out the video (above) of CBS' Early Show taking a look back at 30 years of Music Television!

The network truly has evolved over the years! And for better or for worse, we def agree with interviewee Carson Daly who says that MTV is "not going anywhere."

What do U think about the way in which MTV has changed over the past thirty years?

MTV went way downhill in it's recent years. Shame.

  2. 2

MTV needs to change their name because they hardly play music videos anymore…

Jersey Shore, Teen MomTV is more like it

  3. 3

There is nothing music about this television anymore. Never watch it.

I grew up with MTV. It was amazing to get to know all those popstars and I wanted to be like them, made my own videoclip in the garden. In the 00's MTV still was fun to watch music videos but more and more the reality and commercials began to push back music videos and that's a shame! Other music networks who first had copied MTV are much better now. They also have reality but not as much as MTV.

MTV's actual birthday is on Thursday. I know this because it's my 30th birthday too!!!

MTV sucks anymore, but I remember not having cable until a long time after MTV debuted and I always felt left out. I remember visiting my grandmother and begging to go stay the night with my cool aunts that had cable just so we could watch MTV. I guess it had to evolve and frankly MTV is not made for my generation anymore, but I what it used to be and I am sad for what it has become.

i hate what MTV has become im not gonna lie i do watch some of the sows it has but i miss the old mtv,the one i grew up watching its ashamed that its basically a reality tv channel now

I will hold the memories of the first few years fondly. And from there, who knows, who cares. I don't have cable, don't own a TV and I from what I know about empty vee's programming, I would avoid watching anything of theirs on principle.

I want my MTV BACK… not this shit that is on the channel now. It was amazing, but China Girl was crazy … and mind blowing as a video, David Bowie shook the format with it. And IA the first Real World was great, now reality personality is just a type of career.

MTV has gone downhill. What happened to the music? I wish it would get back to that instead of focusing on teenage pregnant whores.

  13. 13

MTV used to be great, now it's just shit. It sinks a little lower with every lousy reality show that put on. They should change the name because this channel has nothing to do with music and hasn't for a long long time.

Reality TV killed the Video Star. Greed killed alternative music. Rap videos set back women's rights 20 years and skewed the definition of success. Would Nirvana ever have been recognized as one of the best bands of all time in 2011? I highly doubt it.

MTV has gone down the toilet, that's where. Especially in the last 10 years or so. Any channel that turns its back on the generation who made it what it is and starts showing crappy shows about knocked up high schoolers and overly tanned douchebags in New Jersey is not worth my time!

  16. 16

    I want my old Mtv!

MTV ruined rock and roll by making it all about image. Granted image was always a part of selling music, but not the end all be all. No longer could an artist get a record deal if they had great songs, a great voice, and a great show. No, they suddenly had to be a model, too. Christopher Cross made it just under the wire. A year or two later and he'd have never been signed he certainly was no male model!! Why are we celebrating the death of the singer songwriter??

Boo to MTV! It should be called RTV - Reality Television. Although I do watch some of the reality shows on their network, it's not what it used to be. The irony is that MTV is responsible for reality tv and the first 3 seasons of the Real World were "real" and had substance. Maybe it's a good thing that MTV hardly plays any music videos as they'd most likely play the crap that's on the radio anyways…

  19. 19

YES!!! I remember when it was MUSIC. MTV is shit nowadays but i can't say i wouldn't have been hooked on 80's jersey shore.

  20. 20

Gotta agree with poodle, MTV is not what it used to be, but I grew up mainly before MTV and remember going to many great ballrooms up and down the California coast and dancing my night away to great bands. Ah well, things change, you are no longer going to get to see some truly great bands without paying a bundle.

  21. 21

MTV sucks. now all they have on that shitty channel are a bunch of horny teen mom whores and fat ass oompa loompas on that shitty show jersey shore. it's pathetic. who actually watches that junk? lol for real.

  22. 22

I grew up with MTV !! I remember seeing XTINAs iconic music video and she and Britney Madonna where part of this iconic era .. Not gaga, katy , riahana, and other bitches new comers , only emanem , Madonna ,xtina , Britney , what an iconics artis still all superstars !!!

  23. 23

Oh come on!!! It aint even MTV anymore. They don't play music. It's a freaking reality TV channel.
