Jared Leto: The Media Should Be Ashamed

Jared Leto Bashes Media

In light of Amy Winehouse's death, Jared Leto spoke out in a recent issue of Rolling Stone.

In the editorial, the frontman for 30 Seconds to Mars bashes the media for parading her addiction:

It seems that many in the press had no problem acting as though her disease were as trivial as the latest 'hot beach bods' spread. Maybe the next time someone exhibits the classic behavior of an addict in trouble, rather than using it as tabloid fodder, more energy could be spent attempting to help the person. It's a heartbreaking loss, not just of an incredibly talented artist, but of a beautiful and blessed young woman in the beginning of her life.

Yes, very tragic. Our thoughts still go out to Amy and her family.

Thank you Jared! I'm so happy that someone finally just said it. How many public figures does this have to happen to for the media to finally get it? These people are human beings with feelings and they go through trials and tribulations just like anyone else. Then on top of that, they have to go through their problems with the entire world watching them. I can't tell you how many blog posts I've read where they've totally trashed Amy Winehouse as if she were nothing but a piece of dirt on the bottom of someone's shoe. They made fun of her and called her all kinds of names as if she were nothing. These people, whether they realize it or not, contributed, however indirectly, to Amy's demise. There is power in the pen. You can use it to lift someone up or you can use it to destroy them completely. The choice is yours. Use it wisely.

i'm just excited for the release of tony bennett's duet with amy on his upcoming duets album. i don't claim to be amy's biggest fan, but i've truly loved the album 'back to black' for years. RIP amy.

Paris, your site is one of the things he is talking about. You're part of the problem. As are us the readers of your site and the tabloids. We read it. If we really wanted it to stop we'd all stop reading. Hypocrites is what we all are.

  8. 8

perez like everyone else said your type of website people like you are who he is refering too. Jared used to have drug problem and beat it. Maybe if the "media" who was following her every move would of been human and stepped in sooner she might still be alive

  9. 9

Hypocrite, you were on the frontline on those kind of behaviour !

Thanks Jared, right and true words.

Jared is spot on when commenting on this tragedy and Perez, just because you always write how tragic this is doesn't mean that you have to speculate and sensationalize this situation, just think about her loved ones. BTW I see that Jared is wearing glove and I went to 30STM signing recently at one festival and he wore these gloves that doctors wear so he doesn't have to touch anything and he would not let anyone hug him or get close. I understand that it's business and he's always sick so he tries to prevent it but maybe couple lbs would help because this man, though beautiful, is so fragile that I thought he'll break at any moment. EAT Jared, EAT!

no one to blame but the user and you can't change someone unless they want to. I'm guessing she didn't hang out with people who hounded her about her drinking etc issues.

And why is he wearing a plastic glove?

  12. 12

I'm so tired hearing about dead artist lose their life to addiction. Once they're dead I think we should just let them rest in peace. Tabloids and news media get a thrill about talking about it for weeks and it's honestly disgusting after awhile.

Many people tried to help her. Media chronicles things that have already happened, so if anything, helps those close to that person see what they're really up to when they're not there to see it. It's not media's job to scoop her up and put her in rehab. No, no, no.

Leto's heart's in the right place, though.

am I the only person that sees the irony of you posting this and praising his comments Perez.. you personally chronicled her addiction and downfall as well as every other trouble celebrity and pseudo celebrity in fact its pretty much your bread and butter..

  17. 17

YOU DID THE SAME THING, YOU FAT FUCK! Before she hit the big time and dropped your ass, you were saying nothing but amazing things about her… After that, YOU bashed the poor girl. And now you're pretending to be hurt as a very close friend. BULLSHIT! Anyone with a brain sees what you are doing.

  18. 18

You made fun of her. You bashed her mercilessly. Then when she died, you tried to present yourself as her friend and gave us all a bunch of phony sentimental CRAP so you could make yourself look better at her expense. The only thing you care about is cashing in on Amy Winehouse while she's still a hot topic, at which point you'll do the same stuff all over again to someone else. No one with any sense is blind to you; your ugliness inside is worse than your considerable ugliness on the outside. You can post all you like about how your "thoughts" are with Amy and her family, but make no mistake: We see you for exactly what you are.

  19. 19

Go blow yourself, Perez. Much like with Brittany Murphy, you were one of the worst offenders when it came to dehumanizing Amy. But I'm sure it increased visits to your website and dollars to your bank account.

Okay, enough. I get and agree that Amy's death is very tragic, but the responsibility lies with Amy herself, not the media, not her parents, not fans, not anyone but Amy. Until a person takes control of their own life, they are subject to any kind of embarrassment caused by their actions. The media, as far as I know, did not give Amy drugs and alcohol. She surrounded herself with sorrow and it resulted in her death. That's that. It's no one's duty to help an addict except for the addict themself. Quit blaming and learn a lesson.

  21. 21

Do you have any recognition or physical reaction when you post something that is a directed at you? Are you numb to it, does it ever register with you? It would be interesting to see you mingling at an industry event with friends and artists that respected and loved her. Wonder what they say when you flit up to the conversation, "shit here comes Mario, I talked to him last time, it's your turn" Oh Hey Mario!

  22. 22

Re: onetonine – There is truth to that… Hypocrisy is an equal opportunity characteristic

  23. 23

I can't feel sorry for anyone who choose to do drugs. Everyone knows how dangerous, stupid and addictive drugs are but they do it anyway!! It's unfornunate that Amy paid the ultimate price but this is her doing - no one else.

  24. 24

That plastic glove wearing bullshit is gonna kill him quicker. It'll fuck up his immune system and he'll get VERY sick with every little sneeze. Dumbass.

For a second I thought this was a photo of Halle Berry!!

  26. 26

You keep pretending to be all sad and heartfelt for the family, but when you go back on your posts of Amy when she was alive you tagged her with piss running down her legs in numerous shots. I don't think you have any right to be hurting for her, you obviously didnt care when you bullied her which probably hurt her feelings and helped aid this tragic behaviour.

You were never her friend it's about keeping your friends close and your enemies closer. Your one of the biggest bullies that the world knows of and yet you protest about how terrible and wrong it is. Instead of feeling sorry for everyone feel sorry for yourself, you and people like you is what killed her. You put guns to peoples heads and taunt them until they pull the trigger then you turn around and make bank off their death and try to cover up your role in all of it with sympathy.

You'll be lucky if half the world doesn't spit on your grave when you die, your a disgrace.

  27. 27

I refuse to click on any post that has that "…to read more click here" bullshit.

  28. 28

I am glad Jared is pretty because he is an idiot, and so is everyone else thinking that anyone but Amy was responsible for her choices and the way she conducted her life. Unlike many addicts she actually had millions of people rooting for her and a shitload of money to fix her issues. She was a celebrity! She got attention for the good and the bad! Now everyone is trying to make her a victim and blame anyone but her own mental weakness for her death. She was talented no doubt, but she was broken and wasn't strong enough to stop being an addict. That's why she died, no other reason.

  29. 29

I am honestly blown away that you retards think Perez actually posts on here,
seriously? I'm fuck, seriously? …btw, anything said by Mr. Leto here has been rendered moot by his ridicules hair…

He may not have mentioned you by name, but I'm sure you are one of the people he's referring to. Just because you went back and deleted all of your negative stories about her doesn't mean they didn't happen.

  31. 31

Ugh the read the rest of this entry link is such crap! Perez is sooo desperate for hits now that he has to do that in order for people to give a shit. And who cares about Amy Crackhead Wino Junkie!

    THIS!

  33. 33

Um, what's wrong with Jared Leto's hand? Is he wearing a latex glove or something….?

  34. 34

Too bad this talentless jackass didn't die with that tranny Winehouse.

  35. 35

Uh yea Perez i'm pretty damn sure you assisted in her early demise with all of the disgusting and hurtful posts about her. This isn't exactly People magazine. As the person responsible for this site you can report of troubles if they are public and just announce them and wish them well. Drawing on people and name calling isn't exactly necessary.

  36. 36

Although the papparazzi are seriously annoying in their efforts to catch scandalous behavior, they are not the ones that put the shot glass in her hand, the needle in her arm, the crackpipe in her mouth. Amy Winehouse and her so called friends that supplied her with the stuff are solely to blame for her untimely demise. We need to quit conveniently finding blame in the misfortunes of the rich and famous…they are ultimately responsible for their own actions and behaviors, just like the rest of us.

  37. 37

On the flip-side, I thought that was a picture of Yoko Ono!

  38. 38

Love your trite little response there hypocrite. He was talking to YOU as much as to any other media outlet dipshit.

  39. 39

hes wearing the plastic glove to keep the ink off of his hand dumbasses. and perez he is refering to you and people like you in his post.
