It's about time!
After receiving reader backlash for lack of female writers and characters at DC Comics, the publisher has finally told fans that they are taking their concerns "very seriously."
The company has gone from having 12% to 1% female creators. That's a HUGE drop!
"Women are half of the world, and a significant percentage of the DC Comics character stable, and yet only 1% of their creators. And the way that you treat and represent half of the people in your world – and by extension, half of the people in the real world who might potentially buy your books – should be more than a marginal concern."
And it IS a concern! Fans have launched a petition declaring that "these kind of numbers are not acceptable and will not be tolerated." They are demanding that DC "do something about these appalling, offensive numbers or you will only continue to see your sales numbers plummet".
So far, 3,000 readers have signed the petition, which they say shows that, "when women see other women creating comics, they feel empowered. It encourages women to read, to buy, and to maybe one day contribute to the comic book industry."
Hasn't DC realized that comics aren't just for boys anymore? Just by the huge female draw that is seen at Comic-Con every year, they need to realize that women have a voice in the superhero world and it's time to be heard!
