What a wonderful idea! We wholeheartedly approve of this!
PerezHilton.com has been informed exclusively that this year's MTV Video Music Awards will feature a Best Video With A Message category, in an effort to shine "the Spotlight on Music Videos that Served a Higher Purpose."
Here are the nominated artists/videos AND the reasons why they're being recognized:
P!nk – F****** Perfect - P!nk lets out a rally cry of reassurance for anyone who’s ever felt less than perfect.
Lady Gaga – Born This Way - Mother Monster gives birth to a world free from prejudice, judgment and self-doubt.
Katy Perry – Firework - The California Gurl celebrates the spark and originality in all of us.
Eminem feat. Rihanna – Love The Way You Lie - Em and Rih Rih illuminate the pain and peril of domestic violence.
Rise Against – Make it Stop (September’s Children) - Rise Against reminds LGBT teens pushed to the edge that “It Gets Better.”
Taylor Swift – Mean - Taylor Swift cautions negative naysayers that being mean gets you nowhere.
Think one of these artists had a good message this year? MTV will allow viewers to vote via mobile phone or at vma.mtv.com through August 16th!

This category seems ridiculous. The last music video that really moved me into thinking it had a 'message' was Christina's Beautiful. It was understated and perfectly exemplified the song. However, all of these videos do not make me stop and go 'now that video is saying something!' Videos with true messages come along once every ten years or so… this category is a joke.
What!? Rihanna? Lady Gaga? Taylor Swift? KATY PERRY? MTV music awards should just be re-named the 'Music awards that only Top 5 artists can win.' It's all just advertising and commercial pushing. Honestly… Well at least the tweeny-boppers will be happy.

The second I read the category, I automatically thought of P!nk! So glad to see that song made the list. I hope it wins. So many of her songs over the years have had messages and as usual people don't give her the recognition she deserves!

Pink better win because out of all these videos, hers was the most inspirational and it actually told a story. Lady Gaga might have a chance of winning just because she's Lady Gaga. Born This Way was an ok video, but it really didn't convey the message of the song. If Katy Perry wins, I'm going to be so pissed because Firework is really not inspiring and the song annoys the hell out of me.

The fact that neither is included in this category is a huge snub to him, considering all his songs, hits or not, have a decent message. I guess you have to pander to the gays to be nominated.

The VMAs are getting to be a real joke! Nothing against any of the nominated artists but why on earth have they included a new category at the last minute? If they were going to do it then it should have been included from the outset. As for the "message", getting a message from a video is a personal thing and songs/videos mean different things to different people. Its so personal that this category is a joke really and in any event will be won by whichever star gets the most fans voting for them online ;o)
