The Future Of Glee: What Will Season Three Bring?

We've been toyed with, Gleeks. We were so sure that we were going to go through Glee withdrawls over the summer with no new episodes on Tuesday nights. But between the tour, the reality show, the concert movie and all the controversy, we might've actually had our fill!

JUST KIDDING! We can never get enough of Glee! Don't be silly! But we'll admit, we're having some serious anxiety attacks about the coming season. So many people are saying so many different things about the show, a spin-off and who's leaving and who's staying. It's all just a mish mosh of information!

Hoping to clear up some of the confusion was FOX’s programming president Kevin Reilly at the TCA yesterday. Kevin came forward on behalf of the network to address many of the concerns fans and critics have for the future of the show. He broke it down into each individual concern and addressed each the best he could.

Here are some of the HIGHlights:

On the controversy:

“I was extremely upset to learn about this myself on Twitter — I’m kidding. I can laugh about it because it’s taken on more of a heated momentum than it actually is. This show is such an undertaking. As you well know there are many successful shows that have genuine controversy and fighting. That’s not the case with this show. [Creator] Ryan Murphy and his group of associates do a phenomenal job. In the middle of Ryan’s creativity this got out… this was a two-day issue that took on a bigger life. These guys get along incredibly well.”

On the spin-off:

“The spin-off was in the wind. We haven’t said we’re not doing it. We talked about it last season. Ryan did talk to all the actors about it. Ryan himself has said he regrets he talked about it. The spin-off will stay in the wind. We collectively decided to revisit it in the back half of the [season] … I don’t even know what it would be.”

On season 3:

“I sat down with [executive producer] Brad Falchuk and Ryan and talked about this season’s arc. My two cohorts at Fox were fighting back tears at one point. The season feels so focused this year. It’s a very back to basics year. There’s not going to be any guest stars or tributes. There will be a graduation at the end and three will graduate. There will be surprises about how that will play out. Glee is an incredibly creative enterprise. It’s almost too much of a good thing. We’re going to focus on our core cast.”

Then he backtracks a bit, clarifying:

“Initially, there’s not going to be any big guest stars or tribute in the first batch of episodes. And in general, [back to basics] will be the focus for the season. There’s an arc that will drive the year. The competition will be alive and well. You will have the winner for The Glee Project joining at some point down the road.”

On last season:

“Anytime you have a show burning that brightly you worry about it stumbling. Last season we had a lot of creativity, lot of success, a lot of ideas were tried. When you hear from the audience, ‘We still love this thing’ — nobody ever said ‘that’s bad’ — but, ‘Give me what I want in its core.’ There were a lot of different ideas we tried. We discovered amazing talent. Others were guest characters that interrupted other storylines. And Ryan agrees to that. A show this creative done 22 episodes, if this were on cable it would be 13 brilliant episodes.”

And that, fellow Gleeks, is as solid of information about the future of our favorite show as we are going to get. Obviously, we are going to have to wait this out and hope that when the show premieres again in September, it will live up to Kevin's words. Back to basics. No flashy guest stars. We've said it before and we will say it again - if this truly is the end of Lea, Corey and Chris, we want THEM to get the best stories. They deserve that much.

Also, it should be noted that Kevin is the first grown man to be brought to tears by the power of Glee. Just saying.

Ryan Murphy better not mess this season up, It's their last season together, so they need to focus on the original cast. I don't care about Blaine or the Warblers, or Vocal Adrenaline, or any of them. Can't wait for Mercede's boyfriend, and Brittana.

"3 will graduate" well Naya said yesterday at the TCA event that shes a senior as well (and theyve all gotten the first script) and Marks stated hes a senior. That makes 5. So I dont take what anyone says as solid information anymore. No one knows whats going on and thats fact.

    who gives a toss?

It will be a continuation of unrealistic story lines, lip-synched production numbers and bitchy lesbian counselors in manly track suits. So, the usual crap.

Does anyone else see that she has no neck?

Re: hrg – Yeah well blame that on the writers, they screwed everything up. No point of keeping any of them for the fourth season now, that cast had the BEST chemistry, and they're just going to be split up. They should of split up senior year into two seasons, so we could have more time with the originals. Not like I'm going to watch after they all leave anyways.

Re: SarahNJ – oh i totally agree. I just think the producers/writers/people in charge of Fox need to stop talking now lol cause they keep digging themselves into deeper holes. I still love this cast. theyre the only people I dont dislike. the writers messed it all up

    Haha - she got fired!

I don't understand the love for this show. I tried to watch it a couple of times but it sucked. Lea Michele sounds like a guinea pig undergoing severe torture.

That just answered nothing.. Ur a fat pig asshole!

I will miss them. Wow just wow I can't believe this.

No Lea and Cory = no Glee …

If only 3 are graduating, then a bunch of them will be failing. In addition to Rachel, Finn and Kurt, Lauren, Santana, Puck and Quinn are known to be seniors as well.

quite honestly, they need to step it up. first season of glee was amazing. second season, aside from a few episodes, was extremely boring. and if they in fact take off kurt, rachel and finn, i will stop watching after season three. period.
