New York Town Clerk Refuses To Sign Same-Sex Marriage Licenses!

| Filed under: Icky Icky PooGay Gay GayPolitik

Awful. And when it comes down to it, just truly sad.

Despite the state of New York legalizing same-sex marriage, a town clerk in Cayuga County, New York, has refused to sign the licenses, and has asked that she be be allowed to let a deputy take over the job.

According to a citizen in the town:

“Ledyard Town Clerk Rose Marie Belforti submitted a letter to the Ledyard Town Board saying that her religious beliefs prevented her from signing marriage licenses for same-sex couples and the board discussed Belforti’s letter at Monday’s meeting, according to John Binns, a member of the town board.”

Ugh. Absolutely deplorable.

The law is the LAW, lady! If you don't like it, work somewhere else!

Luckily, that seems to also Gov. Andrew Cuomo's opinion on the matter, as he's stated publicly that if town clerks cannot follow the legislation, then they need to leave their posts!

Good! Have fun trying to find another job in this economy, gurl!

Fire the bitch if she can't do her job.
Plenty of unemployed to fill the position.

  2. 2

some people have religions that are against same sex marriage… religion aint in the schooling system.. why should she be fired followin what she believes? dont judge people about that perez.. thats not your job… u job is to judge celebrities.. keep it that way!

  3. 3

Why is it so bad that she is standing up for something she believes in. I may not agree with her but I def commend her for standing up for what she believes in! If she was standing up for GAY rights you would call her a hero but because it goes against her religion she is awful? BS!~

  4. 4

I didn't think you were suppose to discriminate based on religion. You're post is very cruel Perez. I'm actually disappointed. You preach equality, but you sure as heck don't practice it. She shouldn't be punished for her beliefs. Just like you shouldn't be punished for yours. Sad.

  5. 5

Re: iTaLiAnaPriNcess – She wasn't fired, and if she was, it wouldn't be for her beliefs - it would be for refusing to do her JOB! If she has a moral objection to what she does, then I'm sure someone else would be happy to take her place. The US needs to settle this issue on a Federal level, so all its citizens are treated equally.

  6. 6

Gosh Mario she has her own agend just like you

  7. 7

I didn't now this website was here to attack against someones religious beliefs. I am very disappointed !!!!!

  8. 8

You are extremely vocal about tolerance and equality, yet you find individuals that do not agree with YOUR stance "deplorable"? You are promoting intolerance by the very comments you post. respect differences and embrace tolerance, but give others that have different views than yourself the respect that you wish them to show you.

  9. 9

isn't it her "right" not to sign it? I don't agree with it just saying…

  10. 10

Fire her! Her religious views aren't material when you work in the government sector … her opinion about same sex marriage is irrelevant. Her job is to put her signature on the paper, not pass judgment.

  11. 11

Separation of religion and state…it's a state job. If she can't separate her religion from her job then she needs to find a new job.

  12. 12

Excuse me but it's called a "conscientious objection", which is a human right recognized by the UN and the U.S. government. It allows people to refuse to perform acts that go against one's core beliefs instilled by religion, amongst other things. This woman did not say gay people cant be married, she just asked someone else to do it, that gay couple is still getting married.. I dont get why this is such a cause for outrage, Perez. Not everyone thinks or has the exact same values like you, nor should you expect them to.

  13. 13

It is against my religion to be a law abiding citizen and do the job the town pays me to do. Please discuss. Hmmm. I can think of a few million people who are ready to put their personal beliefs aside, follow the law and sign the darn papers. That's just silly.

  14. 14

Re: Serena Loves Mario – never said she was fired. the person before me said she should be. i was directin that towards his/her comment. but the thing is children are pushed to recite and/or practice their religion in schooling systems unless in a specific facility. why should a women… with her religious beliefs go against all that she was raised upon becus the state decided they are gna approve it? a kid wont get kicked out of school so why should a lady get fired for not signin something she doesnt believe in? she has her morals

  15. 15

dnt get me wrong im pro-gay marriage i work with gays & my best friend was gay & i was gna be his surrogate! the thing is.. she shouldnt be forced & if she refuses should loose her job

  16. 16

This is not attacking someones religion..it's her job..and now the law. If she can't do it she needs to leave and let someone who's religious beliefs wont interfer with their job simple as that. She is interfering with peoples right to get married..and the law. Seperation of church and state..get over it.

  17. 17

I completely agree with @blonde chic and @ reply to this. Also, you of all people should know about lawsuits Mario. If they tried to fire that women they would be slapped with a discrimination lawsuit- you're not allowed to fire someone based on their religious beliefs. As an employer of many writers you should be well aware of that as well. Instead of spreading peace, love and acceptance you spread hate and intolerance. This women didn't get in the way of gay marriage, she stepped aside so that it could still happen and so that she could honor what she believed at the same time and somehow she's the bad guy. You have a lot to learn about integrity and honor Mario.

  18. 18

What about this womans religious beliefs for some reason to some people supporting Gay marriage is worse then all the other sins they get involved in on a daily basis, not everyone may agree but doest she have her rights too?

  19. 19

Good for her that she stand up for what she beliefs. And even if she lost her job, I can assure you that she will get another one because God will bless her to standing up. Just because gay starts to get accepted, doesn't mean everyone should. I respect you as a person but I don't agree with your life style and I don't judge you.

We can't erase the fact that God does not tolerate man lies with man. If th bible didn't say that, then its a different story. But the thing is it did and you cannot deny it!!! Stop force it on others and let them stand by their own beliefs. No one stopping you from standing on yours. As long they don't hurt you. But you can't force them to wash their hands on your sin.

  20. 20

This was bound to happen so no big deal just fire the clerk for refusing to do their job and move on.

  21. 21

must agree with all the others on here pointing out the hypocrisy of your "tolerance". People are allowed to hold whatever belief system they would like. Although I may not agree with her beliefs she has every right to have them just as you have every right to love a man.

  22. 22

Yes I'm certain her "god" wants her to forfeit her job, her benefits, her pension and her unemployment. WHAT A LOSER!!! Hopefully she can clean the stained glass windows in her church. WHAT A MORON!!!

  23. 23

i know it deplorable to be christian. she should go to jai or die rather than have any convictions. just shoot her.

  24. 24

If her beliefs interfere with her performing her job, then she should get another job. Another case of someone using the bible to justify bigotry.

  25. 25

Gay people are "absolutely deplorable". I agree with the worker.

  26. 26

Re: mlizaa – I agree, the only thing deplorable here is Mario. He is supposed to deliver celebrity juice and not use this blog as a platform for his political views.

  27. 27

Agree! she is an idiot. You can't mix your personal beliefs with work. You are paid to do a job under the law. The church does not pay you for your personal beliefs. Have fun eating from that!

  28. 28

She has as much right to her opinions and beliefs as you do, Mario, and if you find that deplorable, there's more wrong with you than any of us realized. So cram your equal rights for all thing unless you're going to actually practice what you preach. Asshole.

  29. 29

everyone has a right to there religion and beliefs, but if it get's in the way of the law and your job than you shouldn't work there….

  30. 30

She's being paid by tax payers to do HER JOB. If she refuses to do it, fire her. She'll have all the time in the world to become a minister in whatever crackpot religion she's in.

  31. 31

You say to follow the Law, then tell the Cali gays to follow the law and stop fighting Prop 8, it was voted YES and there still trying to repeal it, so please with all this follow the law crap!

  32. 32

All these posters here who're standing up for religious beliefs. I guess you're all for a Muslim man refusing to serve a woman or vice versa?

  33. 33

Hey dimwits, her opinions do not matter. Its a matter of following the law. Take your neo-nazi
beliefs and find another country where that is cool. Freedom for all, thats the American way!!!!

  34. 34

The town has the responsibility to provide someone to sign the license and as long as there is a deputy to sign should not be an issue.
Pharmacists have been allowed to refuse to fill scripts for the morning after pill. They may also be able to refuse to fill birth control pills.

  35. 35

That's why more Atheists need to be in government!!!!!!!!

  36. 36

no matter how many atheists are in the government or how that same-sex marriage is legal, this country is based on christian principles.
I don't see the big deal, she don't want to sign fo gays she can sign for striaghts, we can still get married too, ya know. Anyway saying she should get fired is stupid since she already RESIGNED from the job. PEREZ JUSTS WANTS ANOTHER PLATFORM TO BASH CHRISTIANS.

  37. 37

Calling her deplorable is rather insensitive and hypocritical, she does have her own rights and should be allowed to express them. However, her position of power is funded by the US government and taxpayer money and as such, regardless of her religious beliefs, she is expected to follow the law on this. If it was a privately owned corporation it would be a different story but it's not, gay marriage is now supported by law in New York and as such she cannot refuse to sign those documents without suffering consequences. She should be warned that if she refuses to do her job she will be fired, if she continues to disregard policy then she should be let go.

  38. 38

Her religion should have no merit on signing a "civil" document.
When you take a public service position, you agree to provide that service to all members of the public. Not just the ones you like.
    *
so amazing how bigoted, hateful, and entitled religious people have become. i mean so many people have serious illusions of grandeur just because they choose to believe in some made up, unproven fairy tale. don't these people believe in something like "god created man in his own image" i guess they have changed it to "god created man in MY own image" "and if you are different than me you don't deserve my respect or tolerance". disgusting!

  39. 39

People need to stop hiding their bigotry behind a cloak of religion.

  40. 40

ITS HER RELIGION. HER RIGHT. WTF?

  41. Rohan says – reply to this

    41

    Great celebrity news!

  42. 42

Wow, it is so funny how you are so quick to get mad at someone who doesn't see things as you do. She is not out dancing in the street and holding up ugly hateful signs, she isn't sying no one should sign the licenses she is just saying she can't, she is quietly standing up for her own moral code. I think that is what is so great about America we have religious freedom and her job description did change after she had the job, so she has ever right to say that she is not ok with it.

  43. 43

Re: honeylove021 – Read an actual history book. The United States was not founded on Christian principles. The founding fathers were not religious and didn't want religion to take over the government.
Christians are the least persecuted group of people in the US, yet so many are so incredibly vocal when it comes to claiming their beliefs aren't being respected.
Re: fefe fancypants – That's very true. We would treat everyone equally and would base policies on fairness and what is best for our country, not on what we believe God would want us to do. I'm an atheist, but I believe if there was a God, he would believe in equality. He would be disgusted by these Christians who go out of their way to persecute others.
People need to stop being concerned with what's going on in the bedroom of other consensual adults and be more concerned with their own lives.

  44. 44

Re: pienado – she is doing her job…..shouldn't force someone to do something they don't believe in.

  45. 45

Re: RiseToStardom – The thing many people fail to see is that a true christian does not compartmentalize their life. If you are a christian then every part of your life should line up with that, you can't be a christian at home and not one at work or vice versa. I fail at this everyday myself, and i thank God for Grace so I can try again, but my life is for Him not for me so I must glorify God in my job, in my home, and in my life. I must point out the lady is not saying no one can do it, she even has someone willing to do it she just feels she can't.

  46. 46

Re: cluckcluck – Religious beliefs are incredibly diverse and you can claim anything you believe is due to your religious beliefs. I believe teenagers shouldn't have babies, so I'm going to work in the state's register of birth's department and claim my religious beliefs prohibit me from filing the birth certificates of teen mothers. You'd think I was insane, wouldn't you?

  47. 47

There is NO god people. Hate to break it to you. Now stop being as*holes. Stop hating people who do not believe your fairy stories. Take you religion and shove it!

  48. 48

As long as someone will sign, she should be allowed to keep her beliefs. Religious freedom and all.

  49. 49

So gays get to have rights, and religious people do no? That sounds fair.

  50. 50

Re: Serena Loves Mario – I NEVER SAID OUR FOUNDING FATHERS WERE RELIGOUS. I SAID OUR LAWS WERE BASED ON THE TEN COMMANDMENTS. TECHNICALLY OUR PEOPLE FROM THE MAYFLOWER WERE RELGIOUS, THEY JUST WANTED TO FOLLOW THEIR OWN BELIEFS. IM THINKING YOU NEED TO READ A HISTORY BOOK, PREFERABLY ONE NOT GIVEN TO YOU IN SCHOOL.

  51. 51

Re: honeylove021 – Wow. I'm probably the last person that needs to be told to read a non-school history book - you can barely get through my living room without stumbling over a book on some historical topic. I have hundreds. You do realise that those on the Mayflower didn't found the US and our laws have nothing to do with the Ten Commandments? You claimed our country is based on Christian principles, which it isn't. Religion has no place in our government. For someone who is telling others to read a book, you're lacking basic knowledge about the founding of our country. Don't believe everything you're told in church, or you'll just sound foolish.

  52. 52

In some states, if a woman goes to have her birth control persciption filled, if the pharmacist has religious beliefs that women shouldn't use the pill, they don't have to fill the perscription. Are you going to go after them for that perez?

  53. 53

Re: honeylove021 – Considering you wrote the following, I think I should suggest YOU pick up a few books…."um exactly my point… When were born were neither straight nor gay… Their not born that way. We choose to be straight and we choose to be gay… Straight is just the natural way to go to reproduce."

  54. 54

Re: bsteves06 – Someone should. Would you rather the world be filled with more unwanted babies?

  55. 55

    Re: pienado – agreed

  56. 56

I feel so sad for Perez. His trying so hard to make homosexual to be a norm. That's really sad.

  57. 57

Scary how many of you think that this is okay… Maybe if she said that she refused to sign marriage licenses for interracial couples, this would've outraged you. But it's the same thing… her religious beliefs have no place in a government job. If she doesn't perform her duties, she should be fired. It's frightening how apathetic so many of you are to the fact that rights are being taken away under the whole guise of "religious freedom". What about the freedom to get married and not be treated like a second class citizen?

  58. 58

Re: Serena Loves Mario – I am a straight female, and even I know that gay isn't something that you do….its something that you are.

  59. 59

    Re: fusionise

Gay IS normal. It may not be in everybody but it's not a disease and it's not a defect. It's just how some people are born. Unfortunately, ignorant people like yourself understand that.

  60. 60

Re: Serena Loves Mario – Sorry, I meant that to go to Honeylove..

  61. 61

Re: main@cardmagnet.info – You have clearly had a big bowl of stupid for breakfast. The whole point of the article is that she is NOT doing her job. Go to your job and tell your boss you are not doing your work because of your morals or religion.
Let us know how you make out.

  62. 62

Re: pienado – @Kim K's Ugly Hippo Ass NOT main@cardmagnet.info

  63. 63

Re: Lilygirl27 – No problem. She needs more people setting her straight.

  64. 64

why do so many people forget that this country was founded on the belief in separation of church and state ? you can have whatever religious beliefs you like, but they do not apply to legal matters. if she doesn't want to sign the papers then maybe she should work somewhere that her beliefs would not interfere with her job duties, like maybe mcdonalds.

  65. 65

Re: skittishkitty – first of all…it is my belief that anyone believes what a bunch of men wrote thousands of years after "god" was supposedly around is pretty damned gullible. second…. perhaps you've never heard of separation of church and state? she can believe whatever she wants but her job duties include signing the licenses. if she can't bring herself to treat all people equally then she should work somewhere else.

  66. 66

Re: iTaLiAnaPriNcess – The only bible you need is a dictionary.

  67. 67

As a government employee, she is required to uphold and abide by the law. If she refuses to fulfill her duties, she cannot expect to keep her job. The state of New York recognizes same-sex marriages; _any_ official who has a problem with that should probably resign before they are fired. In an economy like this, I'm certain that the town of Ledyard can find plenty of people willing to fill this position and do what's asked of them. Requesting a deputy to do one's job creates a redundancy that I'm sure town governments can't afford in this age of budget crunches.

  68. 68

    Re: honeylove021 – you're dumber than you look…

  69. 69

Re: Serena Loves Mario – touche' !!!

  70. 70

i totally stand by what i say… but if evidence shows u are born that way. watever. there is nothing wrong with either. gays are fabulous, but they need to accept that other ppl believe in different things.

  71. 71

ps.there is the definite line between state and religion, but that is according to the law and our country. not the citizens and residents who live here. i put my faith before anything else, and because of that i can learn to love ppl of different race, gender and sexuality. realize we have different ways of thinking, if gays want acceptance, accept others for who they are, not with hate but love. give to get.
Re: Serena Loves Mario – watever, american history has never been my forte, too boring i prefer european history. but thanx on actually lookng back on comments. i wnder if ppl actually read anythng isay

  72. 72

Re: ms trudy – judgey judgey

  73. 73

It is her job. Her religion is just an excuse. Would she claim the same with a mixed race couple? That's in the bible too, or is she placing her personal beliefs above the law. Maybe someone should investigate any mixed race licenses that she granted. Then her whole religion excuse would be thrown out.

So at work tomorrow, I'm going to tell my boss that showing up for work is against my religion but he still has to pay me.

  74. @v@ says – reply to this

    74

This underlines the premise of separation of church and state. She has a governmentjob.

  75. 75

Re: wnyguy – I bet she's a complete hypocrite and eats shellfish! God told her not to eat them in the Bible, but she refused to listen! She'll listen to the gay part of the Bible, but not other parts that she deems silly.
She should be obeying and serving her husband instead of working, anyway.

  76. 76

She shouldn't be fired for her religious beliefs. I may not agree with them, but she has a right to her religion. You shouldn't discriminate against her for that, Perez.

  77. 77

She did the right thing… she stepped aside because of her conscience and allowed someone else to step in.I say more power to her. She didn't say gays couldn't get married …she said she can't ,in good conscience , do the papaerwork. She has a right to step aside.

  78. 78

She believes in her religion but that's right, nobody else's beliefs are important unless they support the gays.

  79. 79

Oh my religion says I have to wear pink hair and heels everyday. Also, I have to kill squirrels, and run over puppies on peoples front lawns. Also, I don't want black people to come into my clothing store. When they come up to the cash, I don't serve them. I also don't serve muslims, or jews. My religion also makes me hire mexicans to cut my lawn. I don't even pay them. It's just my religion. I CAN DO THAT RIGHT?!?! ITS MY RELIGION. I'M ALLOWED TO DO IT!!!!!!!! RIGHT?????!!!!. Grow a fucking brain people.

  80. 80

If she does not want to do her job, then fire her or she should resign.
    End of story.
I have no problem with her having her beliefs, that is fine, but you were hired to do a job and if you can't or won't do it, then there is no need for you.

  81. 81

Re: ms trudy – I think the statement About bible written by a bunch of men require more than just saying that. Obviously u have no clue how the bible works so I suggest that u do a lil more research or study it. I agree that it's her job, but if she is willing to risk her job because of what she believe, then there is nothing wrong with that. And I'm sure that she thought it through before she decides not to get involve. And she knows what is going to be the risk. But just don't downgrade someone for what they believe. Just chill.

  82. 82

Bingo, Mario! Once again, much ado about nothing. The county has made arrangements for others to sign licences as a protection of this clerk's freedom of religion. No one is getting turned away from getting a license for same sex marriage. Thanks for yet another Chicken Little story.

  83. 83

The law is NOT above God. religion comes first-always!!!.

  84. 84

perez really makes me sick. i feel as though the shit he posts about gays just makes people hate us more. i'm gay, obviously, and the comments i read here after he goes on some stupid gay rant kinda hurt. it's like he's not doing any good at all, just making anybody who doesn't believe in gays just hate us more.[br][br]so to those people who do respond negatively to his ignorant and discriminatory posts, just know that there are gay people that actually understand that not everyone is absolutely for everything gay. and that's okay. straight people have a right to stand up for what they believe in just as much as gays. and just because this woman in new york didn't want to sign a gay marriage license, doesn't mean she just hates every gay person there is (but she probably does hate perez, for instance). she just doesn't believe in marriage between two people of the same sex, and i applaud her for standing up for what she believes in, and not bashing every person who doesn't agree with her, like perez does.[br][br]anyways, thanks to anyone who reads this. i hope perez/mario does. he needs a fucking reality check.

  85. 85

oh & btw, why don't my break codes work? why don't they work but the link codes to reply work? wtf.

  86. 86

Her religious beliefs should have nothing to do with her paid job. If she doesn't want to sign the licenses, she should find another job that doesn't require it.

  87. 87

thank god someone is doing something right!!

  88. 88

I really really really really wanna throw something at you perez. You are fucked up in the head.

  89. 89

Re: toxic prince – you are absolutely right. he is unknowingly and naively flushing his cause down the toilet. he's hurting it! I support gay rights and every gay post just makes me increasingly annoyed with it all. the way he is reporting this stuff is horrendous.

  90. fid says – reply to this

    90

@italianaprincess: Your logic is completely flawed. If her job is to work for the city, which really is a representation of the laws of the people, then she has to uphold the rules. Because what you're basically saying is a police officer can say "well, my religion makes it so that I believe women are inferior, therefore I think her husband has the right to beat her". It's one thing if you work for a corporation and they're doing something illegal and you don't want to take part in it, but to say that you won't honour the law because you don't believe in it AND you get paid by the city, then you need to go find work elsewhere.

  91. 91

Move her to another position or give her the boot.

  92. 92

    Re: iTaLiAnaPriNcess

She isn't willing to do her job.

  93. 93

If her religion interferes with her ability to do her job, she needs to step down, she went into the job and this is part of it.

  94. 94

Amazing how bigots use religion to hide behind. Sadly as a civil servant she'll get to keep her job and probably sue the state.

  95. 95

Just sack her, if she refuses to do her job in these economic times it shouldn't be hard to find someone who will.Re: BLonde Chic – because it is her job, if her beliefs infringe on her ability to do her job she shouldn't have taken the position to begin with. It's like taking a job as a sales assistant at H&M then once you have the job refusing to wear clothes from the store because you don't like them.

  96. 96

The hypocrisy of Perez knows no bounds. Apparently, when someone does something that goes against his homosexual agenda, we hear, "The law is the LAW, lady! If you don't like it, work somewhere else." Yet when California outlawed gay marriage, it was deplorable and a miscarriage of justice and it needed to change. Why wasn't the law the law in that case, Perez?

You can't have it both ways, Perez.

  97. 97

Since when is this CELEBRITY news? Stop the gay agenda and go back to posting the celebrity news and maybe it would not be 2 or 3 days old once you post it

  98. 98

I can't believe some random lady from some random town in NY made it to perezhilton.com. Wow, and to think back in the day if you were a nobody you had to make a sex tape with a celebrity to get on here.

  99. 99

ALL of you people spouting off " What a hypocrite Perez is, its her right not to sign coz its her religious beliefs" are FULL. OF. SHIT!!!!!!! Il put it simple for you HIGH HORSE RIDING TARDS…. It is her JOB to sign these marriage licences. If she cannot do her job, as per her contract, for ANY reason wether it extended sickness, religious beliefs or WHATEVER she is legally OBLIGATED to LEAVE! Perz put it SIMPLE enough for you plebs when he stated "Its the LAW". This is only partially to do with gay rights VS religious rights, but more to do with a woman refusing pointblank to do something she is contractually obligated to do within her job description. I spose haters will always find something to HATE on *sigh*
