Anne Hathaway Defends Her One Day Accent!

| Filed under: AnglophiliaFilm FlickersAnne Hathaway

Well, hey! Sounds like she did her research!

Although Anne Hathaway's British accent in her new film, One Day, has caused a bit of controversy surrounding its authenticity, the actress has come forward to explain why she chose to take it in the direction that she has, and also assert that many audiences are pleased with her performance!

She explains:

"Emma is from Leeds but has been at university, and then goes to London, so the accent is designed to change the way it does when you leave home, particularly in the UK. I met ten people from Yorkshire and nine of them didn't sound like they were from Yorkshire anymore."

"I've had people come up to me who have seen it actually and they say, 'I didn't think you could pull it off.' And people feel inclined to tell me that they really had no faith in me whatsoever. So far, it's ended with a, 'But you surprised me, and I really enjoyed your performance.' But I'm just waiting for that person to come up and say, 'Well I knew you couldn't do it.'"

Check out the full interview (above)!

Ha! Well, we would be more inclined to believe her if these words were coming from someone other than her, but hey!

We'll give the flick the benefit of the doubt before we make our final judgment!

What do U think?? Does Anne pull it off?

Your an idiot Anne and they should have never cast you as cat woman…you are not pretty enough.

What is she talking about….you never lose an accent that much!

an accent doesnt just disappear. It may not be as strong as it was but a northerner will always sound northern…they wont suddenly develop a stupidly posh southern accent because they moved to London…I didnt pick up a farmer accent just because I moved cities for uni and left home!

She was horribly miscast in this movie

she says she spoke to people from yorkshire, but did she speak to people from Leeds is the big question!! Yorkshire is the biggest county in England and there is more than 1 yorkshire accent. people in leeds don't speak like people from harrogate, or whitby or hull or sheffield. Saying she spoke to 10 people from yorkshire doesn't inspire much confidence! I only hope she had help from a dialect coach so that she doesn't offend people from leeds with her accent! plus i live near Leeds and went to uni in stoke on trent… i sure as hell dont have a stokey accent!

Love Anne… why does it seem people only bitch over British accents? People tend not to attack over American accents. *Look at Daniel Craig in Cowboys and Aliens (terrible)

    LOVE HER

Her accent isn't remotely working class or Yorkshire like the character is meant to be. And my uncle has lived in London for 20 years but still has a Manchester accent and so does my aunt who has lived in Canada for 18 years. Most people in the UK go to universty in a different city and very few just lose their accents.
