Sunset Junction Music Festival CANCELED!

Sunset Junction has been officially canceled this year!

The city of Los Angeles denied the permit for this year's festival even though organizers raised enough money to cover fees the city was demanding.

Unfortunately, they only had about $100,00 of the $141,000 owed on hand, which prompted the city to deny the proper permits needed.

A lawyer representing Sunset Junction said that a check could be delivered by Thursday, one day after the deadline.

The board's president, Andrea Alarcon, wasn't having any of it though. She said:

"We've given you opportunity after opportunity after opportunity to come clean, to make it right. This is far short to making it right.

This is not an indication to me … that any funds will be available for issuance of a check to support the special events permit. I do see a deposit of $100,000, but that doesn’t mean a whole lot.

Fail me once, shame on you. Fail me twice, shame on me. This organization has failed this city time and time again."

Wow, she isn't messing around! We are sooo sad about this!

This is the first time in 31 years that the festival has been canceled.

What are the Silver Lake hipsters going to do this weekend?!?

Did you read what you wrote? They had enough money to cover the fees, but only had $100K of the $141K due. The dude running the show is a crook who refuses to answer any questions about where the money's at. Bring it back to its roots: a free COMMUNITY event.

mmmm hipsters…no one I know that lives in Silverlake or Echo Park goes to the event. The event organizers are super greedy! The event use to be free to all residents of the neighborhood but now they charge $25. Theres isnt any parking within a 12 block radius, the music is super loud(until 12am) and a bunch of drunk a**holes walking around around acting like idiots!!! I'm glad they are cancelled maybe I can relax this weekend!

So much for the 'can do' attitude nowadays. Besides, some kids might have tried to sell
10 cent lemonade, another no-no now. On the other hand, if the festival has outgrown the community and is a bit out of control as per dabro@7, that's another matter. Let the cozier little community based music events commence.

Re: lalalola77 – They had the money on the way, not all the money in the bank. Think for a second or two next time…

Most of the real Silver Lake hipsters don't even go anymore, haven't for years. It's now mainly a festival for tourists, who come with their cameras to take pictures of the Silver Lake freaks (true). I remember when it was a $5 donation (not that long ago) and Sonic Youth was playing. I also remember when my parked car was badly bashed by someone leaving the festival and driving drunk. Sunset Junction is not a big thrill for a lot of residents. I won't say all, but a lot. It's really hard to leave home (no parking when you get back); we're held hostage for the weekend. I always sort of look forward to about 2-3 of the acts, but I also dread it every year.
