We can't even begin to imagine how confusing, frightning, and traumatic this all must have been.
Rose McGowan recently opened up about an extremely dark period of her childhood, during which she spent with her father in the Children of God cult, before they escaped when she was only nine years old in fear that she might be sexually abused.
She describes it as "polygamous cult that blended free-love attitudes with Christian proselytizing," and explains:
"You weren't allowed to have imperfections. I had a little wart on my thumb, and I remember walking down this hallway — a door opened and some adult grabbed me and just cut it off with a razor blade and stuck me back out in the hallway with it still bleeding. At a very early age I decided I did not want to be like those women. They were basically there to serve the men sexually — you were allowed to have more than one wife."
Her father realized that he was in trouble when he was asked to draw cartoon literature in support of adult-child sexual relationships, and so he took Rose and her siblings in the middle of the night, and hid in a stone house until the cult members stopped looking for them.
"I remember a man trying to break in with a hammer. As strong as I like to think I've always been, I'm sure I could have been broken. I know I got out by the skin of my teeth."
Wow. Absolutely unreal.
We are just so grateful that her father realized when he did what kind of danger in which he was putting his children, and was brave enough to escape with them!
Hopefully this can serve as a cautionary tale to those in similar situations, and we pray for the safety of young children who are being led into this kind of lifestyle.
Thanks for speaking out, gurl!
