Nine Lives Lost In Tragic Reno Air Show Plane Crash.

Just awful!

During the National Championship Air Races and Air Show in Reno, Nevada yesterday, a pilot lost control of his vintage plane during a race, only to crash into box seats next to a grandstand, leaving 50 injured, and sadly, as of today, nine dead.

According to authorities, seven of the victims died on the tarmac, including the pilot, and the remainder succumbed to their injuries in the hospital.

Check out footage from the crash (above). WARNING - although not graphic, this is not easy to watch.

Although the pilot, Jimmy Leeward, lost his life in the crash, along with many others, more than one spectator have come forward to call him a hero for avoiding the grandstand.

Ben Cissell explains:

"I think that pilot in the last seconds pulled up because he saw the bleachers and saved about 200 or 300 others. I don't mean this as a disrespect to others injured, but that pilot is a hero. He saved a lot of lives today. It could have been much worse."

And Kim Fonda agrees:

"I closed my eyes and said, 'I am going to die now'. I was literally preparing to die and then he jerked the plane away and it landed like 25 feet from us. I want his family to know he was a hero."

So unbelievably tragic. And although our hearts go out to all those injured, as well as the loved ones of those who were lost in the crash, we are also very grateful that no more lives were lost - especially when this could have been a much more catastrophic accident.

May those nine people R.I.P.

When you loose a elevator and stall the plane you have no control over it. Jim was a great pilot but there is nothing you can do when the plane stalls at that speed so close to the ground.

Another low blow for Nevada. First, the shooting that left 4 dead (including 3 National Guardsmen and a civilian before the shooter took his own life) and now this. It is just devastating. I was with my family at the air races on Wednesday and cannot imagine this happening. Nine more are still in critical condition, but hopefully they will pull through.

Perez, reconsider your ad placements. This was a horrible tragedy… did you really need to have a pre-roll advertisement of the Charlie Sheen Roast before the terrible video?

  4. 4

U must think people live in little boys butts all day like you do.

Re: MVPnis – "LOOSE" REALLY????????? ITS LOSE RETARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
TO "LOOSE" IS TO RELEASE PRESSURE AND OR TENSION FROM

They need to CANCEL that damn air show. It is a race that uses unsafe airplanes. Even my father-in-law, who built airplanes for a LIVING, says that racing those types of airplanes should be outlawed. There were three pilots killed in 2007, one in 2008 one this year, and another year two of the airplanes crashed into a nearby neighborhood. Since this race began, 20 pilots have been killed and now 9 spectators. How many people have to die before they decide enough is enough?

It's tragic. But I can't say it's surprising. If I went to one of these air shows I'd spend the entire time looking up waiting for a plane to crash into me. Of course I'm a paranoid f–k, but still these shows are dangerous.

He really is a hero… I think they put it well by respecting the lives lost but also giving credit where it's due.

Loser and these shows should be outlawed…very retarded.

You take a risk when you go to these shows. I would never go or certainly not take children! Is it really that exciting to watch??

I live in Reno just five minutes away from where they hold the air races. Words can not describe how awful this tragic event was. The city of Reno is now mourning together for the all of the families and victims that were effected by this tragedy. Watching everyone support each other has made me extremely proud to call myself a Nevada resident. My thoughts and prayers are with those effect, may you all rest in peace.

even my backwoods local news paper covered this a day before you….

@adg100 and vengance: Your comments were nasty and unnecessary. Nine people have lost their lives in this tragic incident - show some respect.
And yes - perhaps these air shows ought to be banned. Too many have died.

    Tragic story.

But Perez your reporting time is awful, there are already new stories being published with regards to this. You need to just get one of your interns to read online papers all the time and then do the awful rewrites that leave out vital information about a day or two earlier.

No it wasn't easy to watch but the fact that I had to watch a 20 second ad before the video made it worse. How can you make money off of people's deaths with no regard for them and their families?

Same tjhing happened in my City last month. But, no people were killed just the pilot. Very sad for all the people at that Air Show. I love seeing those planes fly. The Blues Eagles are my favorite. When they do it right and it goes well those shows are awesome.
    Prayers to all the families.

    Re: vengance
Since your only contribution to this post is being a douche grammar Nazi, here's a grammar lesson for you. It would be "IT'S LOSE, RETARD," not "ITS." "ITS" indicates possession, while "IT'S" is a contraction of "IT IS" or "IT HAS."

Tragic and sad that people died and got hurt my thoughts are with them. Tragic, sad and disturbing that you use someones tragedy to make a buck for ad placement. I hope you send that money to the family's so they can bury their loved ones and pay for the medical costs from the crash.
