Sean Maher Comes Out of the Closet

Sean Maher, the actor best known for Firefly and currently starring in The Playboy Club, has recently come out of the closet!

Whoo! Score one for visibility and progress!

This is after fourteen years of concealing his sexuality for his acting career.

In a recent EW interview, Sean decided the time was now, and told his story:

I [was] 22, I move to L.A., and it’s such a cliché, but the day I arrive, publicists from the show [I was working on at the time] took me out to The Ivy for lunch. They’re telling me, ‘You know, gosh, we’d really appreciate it if you could keep your girlfriend on the side because we want to appeal to the female demographic of the show.’

At that moment, I didn’t think to say, ‘Oh, I’m gay,’ because right before I left New York, I had my manager tell me: ‘You need to get a girl on your arm or people will start talking.’ I remember telling him: ‘I’m gay.’ He had no idea. And he said: ‘All the more reason to get a girl on your arm.’ My agent was also like, ‘It’s best if you keep your options open. Maybe bisexual?’

So I kept thinking, This is my first show, I don’t want to get fired. I’m thinking, What is the potential that if they caught wind that they had cast a gay lead actor that they would fire me? I was young, I was 22. I didn’t know anything. So that sort of started the idea of, okay, well, I’m working a lot, I guess I’ll just keep that gay part of my life on the back burner for now. I went so far as to sleep with women a couple times. It was a very confusing time for me.

[Being in the closet] was so exhausting, and I was so miserable. I didn’t really have any life other than work and this façade I was putting on. So I kept my friends from college [where he was out] separate from my work friends, and that was very confusing. I just kept going on and on painting this picture of somebody I wasn’t. I didn’t have time for a personal relationship anyway. And you just don’t realize that it’s eating away at your soul.

I don’t think I have regrets. I do believe that sort of this journey took me to the place where I got and I don’t think I would feel so strongly about doing what I’m doing now had I not suffered for the years that I did.

Creatively, I feel so much more open and free, and I am so happy on The Playboy Club. I think it’s because I’ve never been so open on set. All of the relationships that I have off-camera, I never would have allowed five years ago. It feels so liberating.

Sean is the father of two beautiful children, both of whom he parents with his partner of nine years.

We applaud you, Sean! Better late than never! We bet it's definitely not the easiest being gay as an actor in Hollywood, but you decided to hell with all that, and we completely support you!!!

You have a lot of proud fans, Sean. And not just because you're brave, because you ARE a good actor, and that's what your career is about!

    who?

  2. 2

Was this really a surprise? ————————————————————– Oh well, Jessica Simpson should be announcing her pregnancy any day now!!!!!!

  3. 3

I didn't know he was even IN the closet - I always assumed he was gay. Oh well, good for him.

  4. 4

LOL… watch his career crash and burn.

  5. 5

@shelah I think being on the playboy club will do that for him

  6. 6

Score one? I think Neil Patrick Harris is having a great career being gay in Hollywood. He play's the straightest character ever. MOST people are very accepting of different sexual preferences these days.

Re: smasher003 – agreed. besides..perez probably had no clue who this guy was or even cared about his life until he decided to come out

  8. 8

    Re: xoxo_anonymous – Agreed.

  9. 9

Won't be watching the playboy club anymore……thanks for ruining the fantasy Sean!

No one needs to know that you like to suck cock except you!

  10. 10

@Kim K's SAGGY Ass You're aware that the playboy club isn't a reality show, right? does the fact that you know eddie cibrian is married to skelator take you out of the show too?

  11. 11

Thats about as surprising as George Micheal and Doogie Howser coming out

  12. 12

First of all if you have a problem with selling yourself in a particular image don't become an actor…. cause that is what you have to do. Second… stop acting like gay people in Hollywood is some kind of suppressed scene. It is not. Give me a break!

  13. 13

Congrats Sean! I'm so happy for you and your family! We Browncoats would've loved you no matter WHO you were sleeping with.

P.S. Perez, you're an ASS. SCORE ONE? It's NOT ABOUT YOU AND YOUR DAMN AGENDA. It's about HIM. Why do you insist on making EVERYTHING about you and gaydom?

  14. 14

@Kim K's Saggy Ass: You obviously never watched The Playboy Club at all, because Sean plays a gay man in the show.

  15. 15

I'm guessing this closet was wobbling on its last hinge! He didn't even have to say anything, unless he was going to come out as straight!

  16. 16

Shut up, Saggy Ass. You never have anything of value to add to the posts. You bring NOTHING to the party. Yea, you can't read this but I am one of your many detractors. You try to stir the pot but lack the intelligence to do so.

Back to your comment, I watched 10 minutes of the plot with my spouse. They politely asked me to turn it off. I agreed. It sucked.

  17. 17

"Better late than never"? Huh? He never pretended to be straight, never toted around a beard like most of them do. He had no record to correct and he wasnt living living a lie. While its nice that he did come out in terms of serving a role model, he certainly wasnt under any obligation to come out.

  18. 18

hope he told his son and daughter first !

  19. 19

Well good for him!!! I don't think it will make a bit of difference to his fans-and there are many of them-once a browncoat…

  20. 20

    ugh. next!

  21. 21

    ………who?

  22. 22

Re: The Eric – Exactly! I'm happy for him and all, but I still have no idea who he is. If he is best known for a show that was cancelled and a show that just started and will probably get cancelled, it's not like he's a Hollywood heavyweight to begin with so he wasn't risking much.

  23. 23

Re: JennFrost – Exactly! To think it is keeping score is ridiculous. I saw this article (The EW one) yesterday through Jewel and as soon as I read it I was so touched and then went, "I bet Perez is going butcher this and make it all about him, such a shame to ruin such a beautiful piece"

  24. 24

I think it's a damn shame that people feel the need to come out of any closet they're in. Sexuality shouldn't be a big deal at all, I don't get it. I don't care who you want to sleep with. It's so stupid. You don't have men standing up and saying 'I like to have sex with women' because it's not I don't know out of the norm say (not saying that being gay makes you not normal but I mean socially at the moment..). Your relationships and your sexuality should just be a private thing anyways. It's just such a weird idea that people have to announce that they're gay/lesbian (especially for actors). Maybe one day people will get a clue, stop being close minded and stop making such a mahoosive deal out of someone's sexuality.

  25. 25

    Re: xoxo_anonymous – Very true!

I applaud anyone who after living a closeted life finds the strength to come out and experiences joy as a result, so "yay" Sean, very nice. That said, Mr. Maher must be the most gifted actor in Hollywood. Ever. Cos I knew Sean in NYC, we waited tables together, and NO ONE ever assumed Sean wasn't gay, nor did he ever act as if he wasn't gay. He was gay. Gay gay gay. Then gay some more. And after that, he was gay. Not in a "Paris is Burning" way, but definitely in an unmistakable way. I'm sort of shocked - indeed, even a tad suspicious - that he was actually as closeted as he depicts. It strikes me as nearly impossible, as someone who, again, actually knew him pre-fame. I don't know…I can't help but sense some kind of "spin" here. (Again, not to denigrate his coming out. I'm glad he did and that he's happy he's done so, regardless.) I could be biased because I did know him and can't imagine not thinking Sean was gay. It would be like someone not thinking I'm gay, which just doesn't happen. Rambo I ain't. I guess ultimately, as LIna Olin/Irina Derevko of "Alias" fame once said - "truth takes time."
