RAINN Responds To Johnny Depp's Comparison Of Being Photographed To Rape

Sometimes, people don't appreciate the power of their words.

In the next Vanity Fair, Johnny Depp gives a candid and in-depth interview for the mag about being such a huge star in the business. One of the topics discussed was paparazzi and the numerous photo shoots he's obligated to do a year and Johnny admitted that he feels somewhat violated while being photographed. In fact, he went so fact as to likened the process to rape, saying:

“You just feel like you’re being raped somehow. Raped… it feels like kind of weird .. just weird, man.”

Weird is not the word, man. Rape is one of the worst acts of physical violence there is, if not the worst. Weird no way covers the feelings victims of such violence feel after they've truly been violated in this way. You picked the wrong choice of words, friend - and there's some people who have something to say back.

RAINN (Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network) issued this statement moments ago in response to Johnny's interview, hoping to reach out to the actor and show him the error of his word choice. The statement reads:

"While photos may feel at times intrusive, being photographed in no way compares to rape — a violent crime which affects another American every 2 minutes. RAINN welcomes the opportunity to speak with Mr. Depp and educate him about the real life experiences faced by survivors every day, and ways that he can work with RAINN to help."

Something to consider, perhaps. We understood where you were going with the comparison, and in spite of it, we don't think he meant any harm by it. Still, it couldn't hurt to be a little more sensitive to those who have truly had experience such a horror in their lives.

Wouldn't U agree?

You know what? How about about nobody talks at all anymore, because it seems like speaking in general just pisses people off. Everyone and their mother has to respond to every comment ever made so apparently it would be better off if we just live in silence. Geez.

    Re: Sick_girl – I couldn't agree more!

  3. 3

I think he does deserve the bad press that statement is totally uncalled for.

You know, it just seems to me that every and anybody with a cause, a mission, an agenda, a whatever always finds a reason to jump all over anything that anybody has to say these days! Johnny Depp has been around for how many years now and has done God knows how many interviews? Has anybody learned anything at all about Johnny in all of these years? For the most part, he has always been a stand-up, class-act dude and has never uttered single malicious word against anybody. I'm certain he meant no disrespect to victims of rape. It's stupid nonesense like this that takes attention away from real rape victims and puts it on insignificant crap. If you are so concerned about becoming an advocate for rape victims all of sudden, stop focusing on Johnny and go do something about the widespread sexual abuse, rape and violence against women in sub saharan Africa!

    this is just stupid

sick of this america hating leftist and his whiney sensitive man shit. you make millions and have limited talent. be happy…get an education or something

I find this difficult to comment on, never having been raped, and not being a celebrity who is constantly hounded for my picture. But I do know the word has more than one meaning . Apart from a sexual assault, rape also means: (from the dictionary)

destruction, violation, ravaging, pillaging, plundering, desecration, defilement, sacking, sack.

In that sense I understand what people like Johnny D. & Kristen S. are talking about - a rape of the soul. I am sure neither meant any disrespect to rape victims, but I don't see any wrong doing here, in using the word.

    Michele

Fail on Johnny Depps part… Bad choice of words for sure. RAINN did the appropriate thing.. they never once bashed him..just let him know that it isn't the same and that they're willing to define what rape actually is..and that it shouldn't be taken lightly

I think you all need to relax..
    Perez is the shit :P

  14. 14

Dude should always have a beard or mustashe, without them he looks like a woman.

  15. 15

SHUT UP. I'm sick of all these stupid groups bitching about everything.

  16. 16

"RAINN welcomes the opportunity to speak with Mr. Depp and educate him…"

Who the fuck do they think he is? A kid?
Who the fuck do they think they are? His parents?

You CAN use this word in other contexts without minimizing the physical act itself.
Read a book. Learn words. And the different meaning of words.

  17. 17

Re: Sick_girl – agree totally here. This is complete crap. He wasn't talking about it in a sexual context, it was about feeling violated and having no control. It's pretty obvious what he meant. Why can't you say anything now days without everyone taking it as a personal attack.

  18. 18

Re: curiousred – EXACTLY. you expressed it perfectly.

  19. 19

There will always be a group somewhere that has a problem with anything anyone says. They probably created this group a week ago just to bitch at him for it.

  20. 20

As someone who has been raped, I honestly didn't think twice about his comparison until it was seemingly blown out of proportion. I do find it strange he chose to compare his experiences with photo shoots to something so devastating - but I feel like he was probably going for 'dramatic'.

  21. 21

what an insensitive idiot. You just don't compare that to rape. You DON'T

  22. 22

    Sick_girl: Funny. And true.

But I gots to go with bobo99 as well. I'm so sick of this priviledged crap actor. STFU Johnny, be grateful for all you have and stop your whining. I'd be happy if I never had to see another photo of you. Make it happen!

  23. 23

Oh, and, he looks like Mario Cantone in the picture. Only Mario is manlier.

  24. 24

Oh..Rape is a bad choice of words. He really should've just said that he felt violated in some sense. But to be raped is EXTREMELY traumatic and leaves long lasting mental and physical scars. NO photo (no matter how often) can equal rape. I think all the people saying "oh you need to get over it" (I'm paraphrasing) really need to serve in a rape crisis center for about a month. These celebrities are the ones who need to move on..Your LIVELYHOOD is about being in front of a camera and now your feel jilted? We must see a balance in all of this. I love JD>>he's a great guy..but bad wording.

  25. 25

OMG, really RAINN, this is absolutely ridiculous. I don't think anyone needs to be educated on rape, I think we all know what rape means and how horrific it is even if we haven't actually been raped. All these organizations from RAINN to Peta need to lighten up and get off of everyones back and worry about the actual people who are out there being raped and who have been raped and stop worry about what celebrities say!!!!

  26. 26

    He is anti-American.
He has been quoted as saying " America is like a dumb puppy".
    He is a low-life moron.
He has two children with his partner Vanessa Paradis, who looks like she's from a trailer park! Bony back and bad teeth!
And he should thank his lucky stars that the public cares about him, because I DON'T! The total lack of gratitude to his fans, and the complete overreach of comparing being photographed to being raped shows his entitlement and lack of IQ!

  27. 27

his attempt at being deep fell flat

get back to the real world where everything u say is under the micropscope and now in some castle in europe being deep and meaningful

love this guy but yes not the right wordage. maybe he should of just said it in french

  28. 28

I am guessing that the majority of insensitive comments are coming from men since you are less likely to get raped and preyed upon….Johnny Depp signed up for all of this fame, he choose this life…people who get raped are unwilling, do not have a choice and preyed upon….He is an idiot and his looks have faded anyway…horrible comparison dumb arse.

  29. 29

I can't stand when people don't know what a word means. Rape..doesn't just mean a sexual thing. Rape can mean more than just a sexual act. Please use the dictionary. The dictionary is a thing where WORDS ARE EXPLAINED…just FYI.
rape   [reyp] Show IPA noun, verb, raped, rap·ing.
    noun

    4.
an act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse; despoliation; violation: the rape of the countryside.
    5.
Archaic . the act of seizing and carrying off by force.

  30. 30

You know there are different connotations of the word rape. Its literal meaning is to seize/strip/take away by force. He is being "raped" of his basic liberties. Let him say what he wants to say. Geez!

  31. 31

I think he meant it in the sense that he feels taken advantage of. Like when someone buys something really expensive but not worth the money; they say they've been "raped" by the cost.

  32. 32

you don't use such a polarizing word without expecting repercussions. As many of you have said, this man has been in the business for a long time, and I personally think he gets his rocks off by saying things that make him seem "against the grain." He knows what kind of images people think of when you liken something to rape. He knew what he was saying and why he was saying it, regardless of the deviations of the definition. Neither party needs to make such a big deal about it. Seriously.

  33. 33

I loge Johnny deep but when i read this I thought it was rude how can you compare a photo wi something so horrible. Insensitive

  34. 34

Celebrities should just keep on looking Pretty and not TALK or give interviews, as they always give away how stupid they are!

  35. 35

Moments ago? I read this story hours before you posted this Perez. Nice try. Didn't Kristen Stewart say this last year?

  36. 36

8 out of 10 rape victims are just dumb whores that decided to drink a bit much. I still don't understand how a girl can be traumatized for getting fucked..Unless it was 8 guys holding her down beating her I still don't understand how a girl can be emotionally traumatized..A "rape survivor"? LOL..ok…..

  37. 37

Re: sanfran1 – I know he choose this life ..but he is being HONEST,he is just saying that he hates this part of his life..and we are criticizing him for hate that?He is saying what he thinks..only that, but not in a SEXUAL CONTEXT! We know what he really wants to say..stop saying nonsense. And for me Johnny looks YOUNG and so HOT here,he still has the sexy look …you jealous!Love you Johnny!

  38. 38

"we don't think he meant any harm by it" Perez, you asshole! When Kristen Stewart made the exact same comparisson last year, you pounced on her like a lion on a limping antelope!
Re: yousuckpeople – Exaclty! Maybe Johnny could've used a better choice of words, but the fact is that rape can mean something other than a sexual attack.

  39. 39

People are dumb. He clearly meant that getting photographed is basically him getting taken advantage of. Heres the difference…
“You just feel like you’re being raped somehow. Raped… it feels like kind of weird .. just weird, man.”
If he would of said "you just feel like you're getting taken advantage of..it fels kind of weird"..Same damn thing, Only a single word was used differently. Get over yourselves and stop being so damn uptight.

  40. 40

Re: sanfran1 – Do you feminist ever get tired of looking like retards? Thats a serious question…

  41. 41

Re: CookiexNinja – i have to agree with you. johnny depp will say anything to make himself seem edgy or as you said it, against the grain. thats one of the reasons why i cant stand him. hes so pretentiouse its actually sickening. i used to think he was such a major talent…like 20 years ago. but he tries so hard to be seeing as this edgy, person outside the box , type of guy that he only comes off as being transparent. anyone that cant see right through him is an idiot.

  42. 42

Whoa, I remember Kristen Steward compared being attacked by paparazzi to rape and she had to issue a public apology!!!
On a serious note, rape is a very very serious crime.
There are just certian things you dont say and comparing a photo shoot to getting raped is one of them. He signed up for this lifestyle if he doesnt like it anymore, he must just quit. A raped person didnt choose anything, they are victims of crimes and is a terrible ordeal.

  43. 43

The word rape has multiple meanings. In its other meanings it does not mean a sexual act of violence. Rape can also mean to despoil, violate or lay barren, such as deforestation is raping the earth. Mr. Depp is by no means a stupid man and he most likely meant his remark in this manner rather then the actual sexual rape. The context clues point to this. I am a survivor of sexual rape and I do not feel his comment belittles or detracts from what I suffered by any means. It is a word, with multiple meanings, as so many words in the English language have. I feel angrier that there is the outrage surrounding this. It just proves that our society as a whole is lacking severally in education. Words have power to describe things and create a picture and an image. The word rape, though used mostly in the context of a sexual crime is also a powerful verb that communicates the depth of violation being felt. To say one feels raped while being forced into photo shoots would be an accurate description if it caused that much distress. Should he be in that line of work if taking pictures feels as if his very existence is being violated, probably not. However it is absurd to take this so literal. Lets talk about Occupy Wall Street and the men and women who are being violated for their peaceful protest. That is something we should be up in arms about, not some actors off handed comment that used an English word in a context outside of what is the norm for everyone.

  44. 44

Damn.. fucking people with your P.C conservative shit.. please shut the fuck up already.. it is like we are going backwards intead of forward.. bitch and whine about everything damn.. can't even speak anymore without offending someone..

  45. 45

Oh come on. Clearly he didn't mean it like that. It's sad that now he's probably going to have to make some big public apology for something that's been blown way out of proportion. EVERYONE says inappropriate things. I don't think he was trying to bring up rape victims or make them feel bad in any way. Come on people. I hear people use the term "rape" all the time and they don't actually mean the physical act of rape. Like when someone says, "I'm getting raped on my taxes." No one gives them crap for it because they aren't celebrities.

  46. 46

Being a survivor myself I'm not offended by what he said. I understand what he meant. In a sense perhaps but not close to actually being raped. And Beauty222 you'd be surprised how many don't know what rape actually is. But good for RAINN for the schooling anyways. He's one of my favorite actors and he's known to be dramatic. So I take it as that.

  47. 47

    Re: winter80 – I was just thinking about that…
it was totally different of "we don't think he meant any harm by it"
    ??? I don't get it

  48. 48

Re: NookiesWA – STFU and stop trolling, it's fucking pathetic now. If you think rape is such a good thing, then please go to jail, and we'll see how much you "love" it then.

  49. 49

Re: Pretty Boys Are Forever – No one trolling bro…I do find it funny that you're so retarded to the point you think someone speaking the truth and being 110% correct about it is a troll. As I said, I don't see how a woman can be so traumatized for life just because some guy held her down and stuck his dick inside of her.

  50. 50

What else can you expect from a man who supports a hebephile serial rapist? Johnny Depp comes across as weak, ignorant and plain stupid.

  51. 51

Re: NookiesWA – You are a truly disturbed person. You have shown so many signs of Antisocial PD, that I'm almost convinced that you do indeed have it.

  52. 52

These people do realise that the word 'rape' does not always imply sexual violence, right? Pick up a dictionary and they will see he probably meant 'rape' in the 'act of plunder, violent seizure, or abuse' sense. A word can have different meanings ya know…

  53. 53

Oh the comments, the comments. Who Pays Cash Daily?

  54. 54

As much as rape can mean other things, I do think it was a bad word choice, simply because when you hear that word you think of the sexual conotation more than you think of any otther meaning. Should he issue a public apology? Probably not as I think most people can see what he meant and that it just wasn't the world's best word choice. However, I HATE celebs bitching about their lives, especially when it's something like photoshoots. He signed up for this, photoshoots are a part of it. I mean, if he was talking about them taking pictures of his children or being outside his house he might have a bigger point but photoshoots? Get over yourself, Johnny.

That being said…am I the only one who feels like he did something to his face?

  55. 55

Re: winter80 – I know right, totally unfair. Why jump down her throat but not his. I understand what they both meant but sure, bad choice of words but unless you are an IQ less moron you'll understand the meaning of it.

  56. 56

Re: Everything popular is wrong. – shut up you fool, reach some information before say nonsense! And @Sick _girl..I'm agreed with you 100%

  57. 57

I'm so sick of stars whining about this. Nobody says you have to be famous. I'm gonna guess you've made enough money to last you a few lifetimes. You're a FILM ACTOR. YOU ARE PHOTOGRAPHED FOR A LIVING! Either stop whining about it or pick a different career. Its never too late.
