Steel Magnolias To Be Remade With All-Black Cast

This is an interesting twist.

Lifetime will be remaking Steel Magnolias (the 1989 movie starring Sally Field, Dolly Parton and Julia Roberts) and will be giving the movie an all-black cast.

Kenny Leon, the director of the 2008 ABC movie A Raisin in the Sun, will be directing this version in which the movie will be set in Louisiana and will be set among a group of women in present day.

The 1989 version is pretty flawless so it will be hard to remake such a classic.

We wish them all the luck though!

    Racist!

they'd never remake a black film with whites only, thats a fact!

  2. 2

Noooooooooo!!!! Don't ghetto up Steel Magnolias. It's a classic!!

Re: PHWOARR – they already have asshole.

It is called a Tyler Perry movie…..which is all black cast……….

  4. 4

    Boring . . . .. . . tired of remakes.

  5. 5

How about Mary lou Angellu for the Sally Field role, there both about the same age, and they both like to EMOTE a lot

  6. 6

How about LaToya for the Dukakis role, she has the life experience needed to pull that one off

  7. 7

NOOOOOO!!!!! Enough of the bloody re-makes. Why is there a need to re-make this and with black characters…what the hell is the point? If you want to see Steel Magnolia's then rent it or download it…the re-make will never be as good as the original.
    UGGHHHH…fucking lazy ass hollywood producers!

  8. 8

Why all the negativity…maybe sum ppl would like to see the friendship of black women in the new magnolias. Why so much racism!

  9. 9

I'm tired of remakes. If it does indeed get remade, Angela Bassett needs to be in the film. Excellent actress.

  10. 10

I think it has a lot of potential.

  11. 11

WHY?…are we going to re make Gone With the Wind too?…why not after dirty dancing, Wizard of Oz etc…UGGGHHH

  12. 12

    Horrible idea

  13. 13

No problem … it'll bomb at the box office, and the black community will get pissed off, crying racism, when it's really all about the fact that some movies should never be remade. I'm sick of reverse discrimination, affirmative action, and the whole race issue. And you know who focuses on it most? The blacks. Do they think my white ass really cares enough about them to hate them? Nope. They aren't on my radar. But good luck to them. LOL

  14. 14

Has the Hollywood well really run that dry? Call me I'm full of ideas! (new ones even).

  15. 15

My God, why? Just another black power-trip.. should be on BET instead of Lifetime - I mean, white people are re-making The Color Purple!

  16. 16

I hope the new cast can actually act. The acting in the original was SO BAD.

  17. 17

this is silly….steel magnolias is based on a true story. The woman herself was white her son is white (who mind you is in his late twenties) her husband was white her mother was white. What would you say if Hollywood did the story of say Billie holiday with a white woman…it makes NO sense! I mean i am all for diversity in movies…but movies where the characters are real people…. that's just ludicrous!

Re: PHWOARR – I AGREE….I hate that it is being made over…it will flop!

  19. 19

Yeah, isn't that called every Tyler Perry movie? Seriously, they need to leave things alone…

  20. 20

ugh! What a terrible idea. This movie is a classic. Bad acting? Ouiser Boudreaux is one of the greatest characters of all time, and nobody could play her role better than Shirley Maclaine. Just add this to the list of completely shitty idea's in todays movie business.

  21. 21

THat is SUCH BULLSHIT!!!! Racist! And Unoriginal.

  22. 22

This movie is so dear to my heart. People who don't know the true story don't understand the importance of Shelby. But just to clarify for those of you who don't know…This isn't a movie about some small town (that my husband and I are from) and a group of girls who go thru some life changing events…It is about a woman named Shelby who was a Phi Mu at Northwester State University in Natchitoches Louisiana, who had diabetes and risked her life to have a child so that she could be a mother and when she died the people closest to her had to cope with her death. This movie should not be remade by any other cast black, white, blue, or yellow It just shouldn't happen. The lessons taught in this movie are priceless for young women (really for any woman) and very dear to every Phi Mu and I mean EVERY PHI MU! I mean thank God this isn't going to the box office (Lifetime is making it) it would ruin everything! Do your self a favor before you go pro remake go watch the move and read a little bit about the history.

"Pink is my signature color"-Shelby, Steel Magnolias

Re: CanadianBacon – They are remaking Dancing with the Stars.

  24. 24

I am a HUGE Steel Magnolias fan. PLEASE don't make this ghetto. No fat suits. No baby mama drama. No drug jokes. Stay true to the great story of the original and it will be fantastic. Good luck!

  25. 25

I guess white people just need to get used to the fact that we are being run out of america! we don't stand up for ANYTHING anymore because we are so scared to offend ANOTHER RACE OR ETHNICITY!! why are people so blind to the fact that white people are smarter, more ambitious, and more able to LEAD our country than any other race!? i mean come on' i have NOTHING against hard working, good WHITE acting black people but lets face facts, most black people are ignorant and live up to every negative stereotype against them! i am seriously not racist, i just see things HOW THEY ARE!! just because its black doesn't mean its BETTER!!

  26. 26

Re: FleurPhi – "My colors are blush and bashful" lol, one of my favorite lines. And as a fellow Louisianan, I applaud everything you wrote.

  27. 27

I'm black and I hate when they make a 'black' version of anything. Do something original for once. Geez!

  28. 28

Love this movie, it's a classic and a heartwarming story. I don't think a remake is needed, but it's interesting to see the story set in an African-American "environment". Hope it turns out good.

Re: kkat917 – Your whole comment is ironic. You talk about how you are not racist followed by racist remarks, you talk about others ignorance while being ignorant, and then you talk about how white is better and end your rant with; "just because it's black doesn't mean it's better". Well, let me tell you this; just because it's white doesn't mean it's better. Actually, *any* colour doesn't necessarily mean it's better. If your comment wasn't meant as a joke, I would highly recommend that you sue whichever school you got your education from, because you clearly know nothing about anything.

  30. 30

This is some Bullshit!! This movie is absolutely perfect and should NOT be remade. Period!!!

  31. 31

Re: XraySpex – LOVE Angela Bassett! such a great actress but she's underrated

  32. 32

HEY!! LETS REMAKE "THE COLOR PURPLE" WITH AN ALL WHITE CAST!!!! IT MAKES JUST AS MUCH SENSE AS WHAT THEY ARE DOING TO "STEEL MAGNOLIAS" OH WAIT…THEN THAT WOULD BE CONSIDERED RACIST….WHAT BULLSHIT!

  33. 33

Why does an all black cast mean the movie will be ghetto. You bunch of racist hypocrites. I guess because it was an all white cast it makes the movie untouchable. Its only okay when white people duplicate other races. You people are a joke and by you people I mean the people who left racist comments. Wow having a black president has given people the confidence to say anything.

  34. 34

Re: kkat917 – ha ha ha. Yes and your comment shows just how brilliant you are. It has nothing to do with being white its all due to the fact that you're an idiot.

  35. 35

Re: Beautiful Disaster311 – Thank you so much! I admit I was on the war path last night lol but I just wish people understood the importance. I mean my wedding was under the oak tree where her son cried at Weazer at the Easter egg hunt! It's a staple movie that's all, I don't think it's racist that they are remaking it or that we don't want it remade but it's just like what @OBOMASFULASHIT said (well kinda) tons of people would be upset if they tried to remake The Color Purple…just sayin
