The repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell (DADT) was a major step in the right direction…now let's finish the job!
Back in July, we were disgusted to learn that even though DADT was being repealed, gays in the military would still not receive the same benefits for their same-sex partners as straight couples.
Now, the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) is planning to file a lawsuit in federal court by the end of the month, in an effort to secure the same rights/benefits for same-sex couples that are given to straight couples.
The lawsuit will go against the federal Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), and it claims that the "federal Defense of Marriage Act violates the Fifth Amendment right to due process, in what the group says will be the first case of its kind."
Here's what executive director of SLDN Aubrey Sarvis had to say about the lawsuit:
"There is a huge disparity between gay and straight service members who are providing equal service, taking equal risks, making equal sacrifices. This inequity should not and cannot stand."
We 100% agree with the SLDN, and we wish them the absolute best of luck with their lawsuit! It's time for members of the military and their families to ALL receive the same treatment, regardless of their sexual orientation!
EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL!
