Married Couple Of 72 Years Die Together Holding Hands

| Filed under: R.I.P.Love LineSad Sad

Gordan And Norma

Here's something a little Notebook-esque for you!

If you've watched that movie, you know what's coming up is about to be pretty sad but filled with a lot of love.

Gordon and Norma Yeager of Des Moines, Iowa were married for 72 years before they died last week from a tragic car accident.

According to Sgt. Joel Ehler, the couple pulled "away from the stop sign and failed to yield to a westbound vehicle. The driver of the other car was unable to stop to avoid a collision."

The couple ended up in the hospital where, as their conditions deteriorated, they were moved into a room together to rest side-by-side so they could hold hands.

Gordon passed away at 3:38pm, surrounded by family and still holding hands with Norma.

According to the family, this happened right after:

It was really strange, they were holding hands, and dad stopped breathing but I couldn't figure out what was going on because the heart monitor was still going. But we were like, he isn't breathing. How does he still have a heart beat? The nurse checked and said that's because they were holding hands and it's going through them. Her heart was beating through him and picking it up.

Norma died an hour later, still holding hands with the love of her life.

The family said they felt very blessed they could die together, surrounded by love:

Neither one of them would've wanted to be without each other. I couldn't figure out how it was going to work. We were very blessed, honestly, that they went this way.

They recall Gordan always saying how he wished he wouldn't leave this world without his wife:

I have to stick around. I can't go until she does because I have to stay here for her and she would say the same thing.

That's a lot to take in! We really wish the accident didn't happen, but at least they were able to be together in the end. At least they both had long, happy lives.

As for the other couple involved in the car crash, our thoughts are very much with them. The husband was quickly released from the hospital, but his wife, though stable, is still being treated in critical care. We wish with all we have she makes it out as quickly as she possibly can.

You are so SLOW w/ stories. It was cute till you found out the caused the accident, hahaha.

What about the guy they hit? All the lovey-dovey stuff is sweet and cute until you remember they could've killed someone.

Oh for pete sake. It was an accident. It wasn't an on purpose. I'm sure they didn't say "Let's pull out in front of this car and kill both of us and hurt the people in the other car." All around it's a sad story and may they rest in peace together.

These people were too old to still be driving in the 1st place. Elderly drivers are worse than teen drivers.

Very Notebook. Thats so long to be married, good for them. Glad the other people in the involved in the accident will be okay.

Friends of my grandparents also died together, the husband collapsed on the floor and was unconscience his wife called for a paramedic after the call she started cpr on her husband as the emt's entered the house they saw the wife actually was unconsience also laying across her husbands body. Later the family found out they both died of a heart attack just minutes apart.

People in their 90s still driving? I didn't know that was even legal…I guess we can see why…

Wow, that story is so touching.

Dude this was already a main story on Yahoo yesterday but with better writers.

Oh Piggy! This must be incredibly sad for you since you will most likely end up all alone, forgotten, or worse yet, ignored. I suggest you go back and view your own New Year's resolutions (you released a video, remember?). In six months, you will be what? 33? 34? You have already submitted to medical procedures that you feel make you more attractive, but I must tell you, in today's HD atmosphere the tampering is evident. Imagine yourself in 10 more years. What will you offer to Prince Charming? Your lovely home tucked away in the Hollywood Hills? Or the use of Teresita's parking spot down in the alley by the dumpster? It's important that you become aware of what the future brings you, for today's actions will form the path you choose.

So, is his name "Gordon" or "Gordan"? And you totally left off the word "hold" in the most important sentence of the whole goddamn article: "The couple ended up in the hospital where, as their conditions deteriorated, they were moved into a room together to rest side-by-side so they could hands." Yes, I sure hope I can hands too when I die.

It was an accident and I am so sorry it happened. But the fact that they had been married so long and loved each other that much is very sweet. A lot of people go their whole lives and never found what this couple appears to have found a long time ago. My sympathies with their family and my thoughts and prayers with the other family that were in the acident.

A similar thing happened with my grandparents. My grandma was in a wheel chair and my grandpa was helping her into the car and he collapsed because of a heart attack, she eventually died of hypothermia cause it was winter. It was sad but the best way they could have gone.

I heard about this. The "Love-Story' part is so cute & everlasting. Very emotional bond!

Re: yeez – If you want journalism, you should pick up the newspaper.

Re: MissEvonne – Nobody will hands with you. You're a hateful bitty reveling in negativity. I bet you're the same kind of person who see a brand new car and despite all the great things about it, notices a couple of imperfections and writes it off.

Re: ChloGlow – So we aren't to have even minimum standards? My grade six class had higher standards. I notice they corrected it…or was that you?
