NOOO! Redbox Raises Daily Rental Price From $1 To $1.20

Oh, don't you dare, Redbox!!!

After Netflix screwed us over with their price changes, you were our one and only hope!

Ugh. The daily rate of $1 will be going up at the end of THIS MONTH. Yup, starting October 31, daily DVD rentals will now be $1.20. Way to give us notice, Redbox!!!

The company, which is owned by Coinstar says that "the change is primarily due to the increase in operating expenses."

CEO Paul Davis said:

"Our redbox business alone passed $1B in revenue year to date and became the leading renter of DVDs by staying focused on delivering great value and convenience to our consumers.

This marks the first price increase for a redbox standard definition DVD rental in eight years. The change is primarily due to the increase in operating expenses, including the recent increase in debit card interchange fees as a result of the Durbin Amendment."

Blu-ray discs will remain at $1.50 and video games will stay at $2 a day.

Still not cool though. We are totally disappointed in you, Redbox.

To see the email they sent out to subscribers, look above. So disappointing…

Umm, the price increase went into effect a couple months ago. It's no big whoop, really. It's all relative supply and demand, and still beats the hell out of paying Ballbuster $5.99 for two nights per rental.

  2. 2

Yeah…It's been quite some time now that it was changed to $1.15 per day. Not really a big deal.

  3. 3

shut up mario,……. just zip it.

  4. 4

Maybe for some of you………but it's still been 1.07 (TOTAL) for regular DVD's in my area. It's not necessarily a large increase…….but netflix did this. it started as a small increase…then WHAM

  5. 5

Yeah, 20 cents is no big deal. When Netflix jacked their rates, they skyrocketed. This story isn't in the same ballpark.

  6. 6

It's 20¢. Come on. Running a business effectively costs money. And yes, now merchants must pay a lot more to Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express for letting us use our credit and debit cards to purchase their goods and services. People need to stop thinking that running a business is all about raking in the money only. Running a business costs money.

It's really not that bad compared to most DVD rental places. People need to start looking into borrowing movies & cds from their local libraries instead! The price rate increase for almost all of these places is due to greedy Hollywood film companies.

  8. 8

Well…. it's better than what Netflix did.

  9. 9

the debit card fee increase is bull shit. I work in banking, banks are reeling because recent legislation has decreased debit card fees in half, so that is bull shit, just bull shit. My bank alone is losing 30 million in debit card fee income

  10. 10

my red boxes are still 1.00 only, so it is a 20% increase in price crap

  11. 11

Perez, you are such an idiot when it comes to business.. See business are in business to MAKE money. When their costs go up, so does the cost to the consumer. You have a business to make money, so stop bashing these companies because they're trying to survive in this economy..They have to deal with more regulations now days also.. Have your ad prices stayed the same from when you started? Somehow I doubt it..

  12. 12

It's only a 20% increase NOT 60% like Netflix. Everyone who rents from Oct 31st thru the end of November who reserve titles online will still receive $1.00 rental fee.

  13. 13

    Re: fairyocious
you got your prices wrong. do your research before spouting out bull crap.

  14. 14

This doesn't make any sense. The Durbin Amendment actually LOWERED the fees that banks can charge to merchants for debit/credit card purchases. So in essence…their reasoning is completely back a$$wards.

Way to do your research, Redbox.

  15. 15

Everyone is spending their money on technology that is ELIMINATING JOBS!!!!! If anyone bitches about this- they are full of shit! Netflic subscribers should be equally silent!

  16. 16

They did test markets in certain areas to see if people would still rent dvds @ the higher price.. I'm in Austin so yeah everyone still rents the dvds even though they have been 1.20 for several months now it isn't horribly expensive compared to many other companies.

  17. 17

Quit yer bitchin'. Nobody is forcing you to watch movies.

  18. 18

actually blockbuster's movie pass is frickin awesome 14.99 a month for unlimited movies and games and there is just something about walking around a nice blockbuster and choosing movies and goodies vs. skeevy movie rental places or a redbox…

  19. 19

If you can't afford $1.20, I think it's time to sell your television.

    20

Get a grip, it's 20 cents. If you can't afford 20 extra cents to rent a movie than you probably shouldn't be renting movies in the first place. You're such a dumbass, Perez

  21. 21

Does it matter? They are giving you a discount on the first night to get use to the price change. Stop complaining. It's 20 cents. Yes, it's a 20% increase, but you know what I still rent from them rather than Blockbuster Kiosk now that they do the Hot List and the new releases are more expensive.

  22. 22

So, Netflix screwed you over by raising the prices to pay for more content, which the user base yelled and screamed about? They tried to do what you asked but then you cried about that too. Now Redbox is raising it's price a mere .20 and you're gonna cry about that as well?
Guess what, Hilton… WELCOME TO CORPORATE AMERICA. Shit happens, gtfoi and move the fuck on.

  23. 23

$0.20 isn't a big jump, plus RedBox gives customers a time period to adjust to the change. The first day will still be a $1 until 11/30. This is much better than Netflix that gouged current and new customers by jumping their rate by 60% for the same service they were previously getting for $10 a month. Plus there was no grace period, either we paid it or left, so I left. $1.20 is still low for a rental.

  24. 24

why is no one criticizing the studios??? they're the ones who's greed is forcing these companies to raise their prices just to stay in business. netflix/redbox/etc have to either accept a ridiculously expensive contract (subsequently forcing a price hike on their customers) or tell the studios to eff off (which means that studio's catalog gets pulled and the customers are still pissed). i'm tired of everyone making netflix/redbox/etc the villain in this situation. it's the studios who are giving a big middle finger to their viewers and we're just taking it. oh well, look what happened to the major record labels in the end. this is the same thing.

  25. 25

We all know that Congress recently passed a law lowering debit card fees that banks charge merchants, so Redo is lying.

  26. 26

That's why there's Mixvid . net, free movies free music free games no hassle.

  27. 27

  28. 28

The increase is too much for me. I'm going to the library where everything is still FREE and they get all the new releases anyway. I may have to wait a few weeks but who cares. Free is the way!!

thats a 20% increase, HUGE! by all means. The card fees went up sure, but not by 20%! and if operation cost is increasing, doesnt that mean so are their profits? whatever, just be honest about it and say you can make more money now that netflixs went up.
