Gay Performers Hit All-Time High On Primetime TV

| Filed under: TV NewsGay Gay Gay90210GleeLGBT

LGBT themes, characters, and performers have hit an all-time high on primetime television.

28% of all primetime TV have shows that feature LGBT themes and has even inspired a new report titled "The New Mainstream."

One in four scripted series and one in five reality shows in the 2010-2011 season included gay characters, actors and/or storylines, including Modern Family, Grey's Anatomy, The Office, 90210, Glee, House, Dancing With The Stars, and Big Brother 12.

Matt O'Grady of EVP, Audience Measurement at Nielsen says:

"The inclusion of LGBT characters on TV more accurately portrays the diverse and multicultural society we live in by encompassing all segments of the population."

What a huge important step for TV to finally catch up with modern issues. It's wonderful that television is finally creating storylines and characters that reflect EVERYONE.

You know, not every walk of life is littered with gay people, out or in the closet. I love gay people, they my homies. My best friend is gay. However, I think if every show absolutely included a gay character, it'd become unrealistic and too overtly PC. It's great that they're being represented, but hopefully hollywood doesn't replace ignorance of the existence of gay people with an unrealistic over-saturation of gay characters.

this is why i stopped watching tv.

ALTERNATE HEADLINE: Ratings for the latest tv shows featuring gay characters have been poor but will keep adding diverse characters to punish us for our sins.

Its really interesting how quickly the struggles of gays has become the only movement of oppressed peoples even acknowledged by Perez and major media outlets. What of the struggles of Blacks, Latina's, Native's etc.. to get similar representation on prime time??? does the support for White gay culture overshadow or mean more than these other movements? I say white queer culture cuz I don't see the queer cultures of other racialized groups represented…geeze I wonder why? maybe its cuz White gay men run congress and are an elitist group unto themselves…no wonder their agenda and their stories are plastered all over television.

Don't think I haven't noticed, and I'm getting damned sick of it. Every show I turn on two queers are kissing each other. The comedy shows with all the queers are ones I never watch. Enough, already.

Still doesn't make it right. How can something that would cause the extinction of the human race be normal?

  9. 9

which is one reason i just hate watching tv anymore. TV SUCKS!!!

Great 1% of the population dictates 28% of tv. Must be real life (sarcasm).

I'm glad TV is becoming more diverse. Everyone needs to be reperesented, its nice that it's not as homogeneous as it was before. We are not clones of one another.

Re: likewhocares – What is your background that you feel you know what is right or wrong? Secondly, only 10% of the population being gay or lesbian does not cause extinction (as is seen in hundreds of species, as well as humans) but actually serves to strengthen a population.
For those who do not want to see so many gays and lesbians on TV or posts about it on the internet: Stop watching or reading those topics. TV makers only make things that get watched — that's how it works. Somewhere out there, a majority of people of enjoying watching gays and lesbians and tuning in. Trust me, I work in TV — if people aren't watching it, we stop making it.

How about a story about the vanishing middle and working class? I would watch that and I have not watched TV in a long time (except to watch USC football).

T.V. still needs to depict gay women…not stereotypes either…just normal, attractive ladies, mentally stable ladies…yes they exist, they just blend in more because they are not butch….more women please. The world is a wonderfully diverse place, t.v. should reflect that more…not just through gay men. thank you.

Re: DizzySnazzle – Over-saturation of gay people? Please honey….not gonna happen..with all the fear and hatred and ignorance in this sad world…straight people do not want to see mucho gay people just like gay people do not want to see mucho straight people….yet gay people live in a "straight" world every darn day….perhaps it is just very refreshing to see gay people on t.v. once in a blue moon…Imagine living in a gay world straight person…don't cha think it would be refreshing to see straight people every now and then on t.v.?????

  16. 16

Yay. We're a fucking percentage on TV. What the fucking fuck does that do Perez? We have the same old BS stereotypes we've always had whether the flamers on modern family, the musical theater flamers on glee and now the flamers on american horror story. The obligatory supporting gay character has grown formulaic: Either a flamer or a slutty gym rat. It is so fucking forced how could any of it be of use? Lets see a tv series where there lead is not a hetero but a gay soldier coming back from Iraq. One that killed people. And his boyfriend is a bear who beats up dumb breeders for sport. Thats what I fucking want to see.

  17. 17

Yeah, so now we got evil, stereotypical bitchy queens a la A-List New York/Dallas representing us. Yay, such progress!

Re: likewhocares – not likely … straights keep making gays for other gays to date: quit making gay babies (oh that's right, you can't control it)

i don't know any gay people, don't associate with any gay people, never had any gay people approach me, none of my friends are gay people, no one in my family is gay, no one i work with is gay. but i guess that makes sense being that gay people make up only 1% of the population and its a mental disorder that many of them are embarrassed of. the only association i have with gay people is the funny charactures they play on TV. they are very interesting people i guess.

Re: buck – Actually 10% of the population is gay, not 1%. In fact, 10% of the population is also left handed, so that can give you idea of how many gays would be in your life. Perhaps no one has come out to you because they don't feel comfortable with it. Do you put off a vibe that would make gay people feel that it is not a good idea to confide in you?
Also in regards to a mental disorder, the APA refuted that 40 years ago — you are a bit behind on that. Being gay is no more a mental disorder then being left handed.

Re: likewhocares – Well, you'll have to find out where all of these gays come from. We know they can't reproduce on their own. Perhaps we should start by killing Teresita.

    Re: JimA

10% of the population is NOT gay. its more like 3.5%. Get your numbers straight. get it? straight? idiot

Re: Hewhosmokeswomen – Where are you getting your statistic? Is that state, US, another country or Global? What age groups does that include? Is it just self-identified or does include latent? Does include questioning individuals? Transgendered? There is a lot you can do with statistics.
I was citing a common Kinsey statistic for general illustration. Whether its 1.7%, 12.4% or 3.5%, it still results in millions of individuals.
