Dear Shorter University….THIS SUCKS!

| Filed under: Icky Icky PooGay Gay Gay

Apparently we still live in an age when witch hunts are acceptable.

Shorter University, a privately owned Christian Baptist College in Georgia, is reportedly mandating that its 200 employees sign a "personal lifestyle pledge," which means that they reject homosexuality, premarital sex, and adultery!

According to President Don Dowless, the goal of this disgusting act of hate "is not to offend people," but to "declare who we are."

Oh, really? And somehow by declaring who you are, you have single out and crucify those who are different?

Naturally, not all students and employees are pleased with the change in policy, and one staffer anonymous says:

"We now will live in fear that someone who doesn't like us personally or someone who has had a bad day will report that we've been drinking or that we are suspected of being gay."

Exactly! Beyond the obvious reasons that this is a disgusting act of bigotry and discrimination, what happens when disgruntled employees start using it as ammunition against co-workers?!

Nothing good can come from this!

Such an unbelievable shame that this is what education is about for some. Ugh.

I'm gay and do not agree. However, it's a private school and they can do whatever they want. I would simply not want to work for them.

  2. 2

If it was just a case of signing something rejecting sex before marriage and cheating you wouldn't have even published this, quit bitching.

  3. 3

Re: XraySpex – Just because it is private does not give them the right to discriminate. This is no different from the country clubs that used to reject all black, Jewish, or 'ethnic' memberships. It may be legal, but it needs to be pointed out so that people cannot turn a blind eye and allow it to continue. Everyone who goes there needs to be aware of this, and aware that their support of this organization makes them culpable to continued discrimination.

  4. 4

Shut the fuck up. Your such a douche. It is a private, christian university. You want special treatment, not equal. They do not believe in homosexuality, however misguided they may be. It is their right. These schools already make their students sign moral clause pledges for other things against their religion. Quit being such a fucking hypocrite.

  5. 5

Uhm it's a PRIVATE, CHRISTIAN school. They have the right to do this, and they SHOULD.

i guess its ok for gays to 'declare who they are' but better not be hetrosexual and 'declare who you are' or Hilton will judge you.

  7. 7

Oh Really Perez?!?!? Where is YOUR tolerance? If you can flaunt your sexual preference, what makes you think that people who think differently than you can't be comfortable with their's. If anyone decides to live according to Christian values, they should not be ashamed of it or made fun of. Bullying works both ways.
They are not discriminating!!! If you don't want to work there, go somewhere else and work. You have the freedom to teach at any other institution you choose.

  8. 8

This is an oppressive policy, it is wrong, and it's fine that they are being brought to task for it.

  9. 9

They are discriminating .. and it is their right to discriminate. And you calling them out on it is equally OK. You should name them and express your opinion — and you did. It will probably come out that this President maintains a rent boy or mistress at some point. And it will keep some people in the closet — at work. They are a small inconsequential place. And with these attitudes they will always be a small inconsequential place.

It seems a slippery slope to kick people out on hearsay. Why would you want to go to a school that churns out bigots? As far as the transgender story PEREZ that is not fair if the school let the student put the wrong gender on her application it would be fraud.

If you do not like it DO NOT GO TO SCHOOL THERE. You cold not pay me to go to school with all this jesusy shit.

  12. 12

Re: WhyCantILeaveComments – …. but it's not. Sorry to be so obvious, but being gay is a part of someone's identity and it shouldn't affect their employment at all.

  13. 13

Re: Xenu – Jesus got kicked out of public schools a long time ago, so Christians now have to pay to have God in their schools. It's their right. Get over it.

  14. 14

Re: Crackertown – But that's the thing, under this new policy gay people WILL NOT BE ABLE TO WORK AT THIS COLLEGE. That is taking away rights that they would have if they were straight. That's not equality by any stretch of the imagination.

  15. 15

The bible is constantly being rewritten and retranslated and because of that no one can agree on what it says. Also the meaning of it is always changing based on what's going on socially. If it can happen with slavery, it can happen with homosexuality.

It is true that in our nation with the freedoms we are granted. But as the famous quote says "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." As educated citizens, it is our duty to watch for injustices and stand up for people who are being treated unfairly. Just as it is this university's right to choose who they employ, it is Perez right to speak up as he did here.

Re: XraySpex – What makes a difference if you are gay……stop making it an issue…..

    it also stated premarital sex……moron!

Re: brit06 – being gay is not your identity….it is a sexual preference that is no ones business………I DON'T NEED OR WANT TO KNOW WHO YOU FUCK…so stop shoving it down people's throats….literally!!! lol

  21. 21

    Re: noonehascommonsense – hardly…ignorant idiot.

  22. 22

They have a right and it's not like they're forcing people to come to their school and work. It's up to the people who attend if they wanna sign up for the agreement. FREE WILL. Plus, those agreements are basic Biblical principals. It makes sense to expect their members to live by those standards.
God forbid people challenge your personal agenda or make you feel defensive about your lifestyle, Perez.

  23. 23

I actually live in Rome, home of Shorter University, and this is a prevalent attitude in this bible-thumping, redneck, backwoods hillbilly way of thinking town. I've never been in an area where they have no clue how to just live and let live; it's no one's business what people do in their own homes. I have to believe the God I grew up (here in Rome) learning about has to be disgusted with all the judgmental heathens here; claim to be Christian, but have no tolerance or understanding of anyone "different". Let God be the judge; learn some love and tolerance. Take care of your little piece of space and leave it at that; if everyone would do that things would be so much better - certainly don't need your employer telling you who you can sleep with and when (unless, of course, you work in a brothel).

  24. 24

I went to Berry College, which is Shorter's sister school, literally five minutes down the road. Shorter is NOT a Christian school. It's a school with religious background. Big difference. Yes, it's a private institution, which means it can get away with a lot of things that are morally repugnant. Does that mean we should all "stop bitching about it?" Okay, how about we go back seventy years or so, when it was legal for public schools to discriminate based on race? It used to be legal to prevent women from voting. Sending your three-year-old to work in a saw mill used to be legal, too. Forcing your wife to have sex with you used to be legal. The enslavement of a human being based upon their skin color was legal for a long damn time. Oh, and recently it became legal in Michigan to bully your classmates as long as you have strong religious convictions about it.

Whether you put that argument forth because you're too lazy to get off your ass and do something about the problems in this world, or you're a right-wing extremist who knows so little about Christianity that you think what Shorter University is doing is justifiable because of its religious affiliation, I have an idea: why don't you shut up and stop bitching about it? It's perfectly legal for Perez Hilton to post his opinions online…

  25. 25

Good for them. Perverts (gays) should be kept out of schools.

  26. JimA says – reply to this

    26

Re: Mad Dog – Gays are not perverts. The APA confirmed decades ago that both heterosexuality and homosexuality are normal aspects of human sexuality. If you feel something is wrong with gays that's your prerogative; but don't go resort to name calling.

  27. 27

I live in little Rome, GA (was born here), worked at Shorter for several years, earned one of my degrees at Shorter (thank goodness I have others!). Not everyone here agrees with what Shorter has done. It is nothing but WRONG! Do you really think it sensible for an employee to be fired for having a drink of wine or a beer with their dinner when dinning out? Do you think it's ok for them to discriminate against homosexuals and those who go to other than their 'designated' church? The students receive Federal and State money (can we say Pell Grants, HOPE Grants, and Federal Workstudy jobs????),which goes toward tuition, which funds the school. Think about it…
Shorter is NOT acting in a Christian manner!
This is a beautiful small city. Thank goodness we do have other (quality!) schools here and that most of the people here (I sure hope!) are not backwards, hateful, fundamentalists who think they have a right to judge others.

  28. 28

    Re: Gay Republican

Really? Their students accept Federal and State money that pays their tuition, which supports the school. What say you now?

  29. 29

    Re: WhyCantILeaveComments

Do you realize that Shorter employees cannot even have a glass of wine or a beer with their meal at a restraurant (anywhere in public!)? They will be fired if they do. Do you believe that is right?

  30. 30

Re: JimA – The APA also had previously confirmed that homosexuality is a mental illness. They only changed their stance because of public pressure.

  31. 31

You're an idiot Perez! As a gay male, I personally wouldn't WANT to work there, but it is their right. What you fail to realize is that you are very hypocritical in your views. This is a PRIVATE school with no government funding. By dictating what they can and can't do, you substantiate all of the crazy right wing views that gays are forcing homosexuality down their throats. I wish you had enough sense to realize that YOU DO MORE HARM THAN GOOD TO THE GAY COMMUNITY….WISE THE FUCK UP!

  32. 32

I'm with you, Perez. I'm from this small Georgia town where this school is located and I wholeheartedly disagree with this policy. It's unfortunate that institutions are so scared of change, reality, and the world - and the people in it -, that they feel the need to control others.

Re: Mad Dog – Public pressure? Do you think that the majority of society supports same-sex relationships? Who pressured a professional society of physiologists to change their mind in the 70s? If that were they case, why haven't they reversed their decision in the last 40 years? Yes from about 1880 to the late 1960s homosexuality was listed as a mental illness — but after a hundred years of study they reversed that decision. You are a bit behind — but why do feel that gays and lesbians suffer from a mental illness?

Religion sanctioned discrimination. Separate church and state.

Re: Kim K's Saggy Ass- How the hell am I an ignorant idiot? At least I'm not a name caller.

  40. 40

A lot of students do not agree with this policy. Just because it's the mindset of our administration, or most of them, it isn't how most students and employees think! So please do not condemn all Shorter students and employees. Shorter is such a great place and it makes me sad to see this happening.

  41. 41

I go to Shorter University, and what you are saying is way off. It's not meant to discriminate against people, and we are also a PRIVATE CHRISTIAN university. Homosexuality is against the Christian religion so having workers sign that paper is a right we have. There are also many gay students that go here, and none of them are discriminated against. I'm not saying I'm for what's happening, but at the same time, it's nothing like you are making it out to be.

  42. 42

Both of my parents attended Shorter. My father has since shuffled of this mortal coil, however my Mother is disgusted by this. She has stopped all alumni funds going to the school and as a highly sought after Atlanta Vocal, Piano, Guitar and Theory teacher she will no longer recommend her students attend Shorter (who happens to have an excellent music program) because she KNOWS that discrimination on an level is wrong. It is bullying, it is hate, it is JUDGEMENT! And any good Christian knows Judgement is GOD's JOB not ours!!!!!
