"I wouldn't change anything, no. Because I think I went into it innocently, and it became what it became. And now they want to tear me down. Instantly, as soon as I did Pirates II, they say: 'Oh, he's selling out.' What the fuck does that mean, selling out? What if I did Ed Wood II, is that selling out? I mean, it's not like I was ever looking to become franchise boy, I was never looking to become anything like that. I just latched on to a character I loved."

- Johnny Depp on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise to The Guardian

"I just latched on to a character I loved."

And we love it too! F*ck the haters!

Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the best characters ever - I am so glad Johnny thinks so too.

  3. 3

Well its not like anyone else could eevr step in and play that role. Johnny owns it! He is sexy as hell in it too! Even my 65 year old mother loves him as Jack Sparrow LOL =)

If he loves it, that's reason enough to do it. Critics aren't privy to insider information, and should be treated accordingly. Over the long course of his career, his acting legacy will speak for itself. Surely by this point Johnny Depp has earned the right to do whatever role he ruddy well pleases. Ah-haargh, mateys.

A character I loved too when it was supporting. The whole series went off track when he was repositioned as lead.

Man he has a pretty face…especially in that pic above. Yummy!

    Love me some JD! Yum-O

Don't sweat it, Johnny. With all the money made from the Pirates series, clearly most of us don't see you as a "seel out."

  9. 9

You tell him Jack….I mean Johnny. Captain Jack is an awesome character. Just bc a movie does well, or a character is a big hit, doesnt mean its crap.

You were making movies that people really liked and you were making a lot of money at the same time. That sounds like a win-win to me.

  11. 11

boohoo Johnny. From an artistic point of view I dont see what you get from doing these films over and over. Yes youre franchise boy and you make mega millions so suck up the criticism. You cant have it all.

  12. 12

Uh yeah, and latched on to millions of dollars too. Is he saying he would have done the Pirates movies for free or less money he just loved that character so much??? Doubt it. He can protest as much as he likes - SELL OUT!!! Those movies are rubbish.

Re: Lasqueesha – Thank God someone sees it like it is!

Re: pusspuss – How can he be a sell out when he actually PAYS to be able to play certain parts?

  15. 15

I don't know who says he's a sell-out, but I'd have to wholeheartedly disagree. Let's first consider the fact that the Pirates franchise exists primarily because of him. He created and embodied a now iconic character that audiences loved and wanted more of. Before he was a parent, those people calling him a sell-out might have had a case, but now he looks to make movies that his family can enjoy. He is still an undeniably talented actor and artist and he enjoys what he does. Sometimes, I think the phrase "sell-out" is another way of expressing one's jealousy without actually admitting to it.

There are millions of people worldwide who love the Jack Sparrow character - (there should be a 'Captain' in there somewhere..!) so no one can say these films have not been hugely successful - and that's down to the genius of Johnny Depp. He created the wonderful pirate who appeals to all ages and nationalities and is loved by countless millions of people all over the world. That's not 'selling out' - that is one hell of a fantastic achievement, and how many of us could equal that? Johnny is a creative genius - he's on another level. That should engender admiration, respect and affection, not green eyed, raging, dribbling jealousy.
