Professor Has His Students Pose Nude With Him And Calls It "Art"

| Filed under: Icky Icky PooWacky, Tacky & True

Totally creepy!

Michigan State University professor Danny Guthrie has been photographing himself with students, some who are nude, for over 40 years and calls it "art."

Kinda weird, right?

His pictures (like the one above) have been under scrutiny recently, with some calling them "obscene" and oppressive to women.

He responded with this statement:

"Certainly subject matter such as this is politically charged…My intent is to acknowledge these various traditions and debates, twisting and blurring the codes of classical aesthetics, contemporary rhetorically motivated art, and even erotica.

The images do not mean I have this or that fantasy about a particular individual or situation, but they do explore emotions that I – and I assume most others – have felt."

As one ages, it is with no small sense of remorse and regret, that one comes to experience the realm of desire, romance, and carnality as existing more in the past than the future."

Some of the students who have volunteered to pose with him have actually stepped up and defended him and the images.

Sure, of course, anything can be called art, but the fact that he's sometimes nude and his students are sometimes nude (and also, waaay younger than him) just seems a little yucky to us.

What do U think? Are his pictures pornographic/exploitative? Or just simply art?

I'd call it art. I think it is cool and the consent of the students makes it completely fine.

  2. 2

If these students are of age and willing to pose, I just do not see a problem. Art is controversial and will always be. If you don't like it, don't look at it.

  3. 3

    i support it

  4. 4

… and if it were two of the same sex posing together, you would call it revolutionary and print equality for all .

  5. 5

I think with the consent of adults it is appropriate. As long as it is ok with the students and nobody has any qualms about it, this is another situation where people need to just mind their own damn business. What is it with the world…we just stand around pointing the finger and what everyone else is doing…?? Lame Mario.

    Re: northdolphin – I agree…so narrow minded.

You'd call in inspired and visionary if Gaga did it.

If the students accepted to do it and got the right age then its fine. If none of them complained of any kind of abuse I dont see whats so wrong. Id call it art too if the images are like this. In order for something to be considered pornographic, there must be penetration, otherwise the word to be used is "erotic". Tho, even pornography it has been seen as art, overall in the 60s.
I guess some people see it as bad cause its "professor and student". But if theres no abuse or harm and no victims whatsoever I think is fine.

    it is art!

  10. 10

It's not "kinda weird" if everyone involved is a consenting adult.

  11. 11

And if you're that upset about the age difference, maybe you shouldn't be lusting after MattyB, pedo. Or maybe you should post something about Sandusky and his little boy sex. You've been hypocritically silent. You've probably been busy erasing the kiddie porn off your drive.

    an you say
    C R E E P Y

I might not consider it art. But so what they are all over 18 and what every they want to do is fine they are all adults. Unless it is against school policy then what ever they want to do is fine. I like when you try to make a point and no one agrees with you. Usually your points are pointless.

  15. jham says – reply to this

I wouldn't call it porn, and I suppose it could be considered art . . . but . . . it kinda reeks of a dirty old man using his position and influence to take nudie pics with his students . . . it's kinda gross. Couldn't he take picks involving partners of the same age (and excluding himself)

    Re: jham
Er… forty years ago, he wasn't a dirty old man. Please think (try — it doesn't hurt — before posting.

I dont need to say a word. you guys just said it all

In what way is that photo pornographic? There is nothing wrong or creepy about this. It is art. You should be ashamed of any suggesting that it is porn. If you want to see an old guy being creepy with a young person, go look at the photo you took of you pretending to poop on a 17 year old boy. That's fucking creepy.

  20. 20

Shame on you Mario for making this bigger then it needed to be! This is most definitely ART! You obviously have issues with people of an older age, I would dare to say you are an ageist!! The Professor doesn't force the students to get naked and pose with him so there is NOTHING wrong with what he is doing! I am starting to think you should see a Psychiatrist and deal with your issues!!

  21. 21

If it were two dudes Perez wouldn't care.

  22. 22

They are in college and therefore 18 and over so I don't see a problem.

  23. 23

If they agree to pose, there's nothing wrong with it. Forever ago I was friends with a photographer, and there were several times when we'd end up nakie and taking pictures. And yes, it was art.

  24. 24

If everyone is a consenting adult, I don't see the problem. The only thing that would be wrong is if he was using his authority over the students to persuade them into doing something they were uncomfortable with, but since students are defending him that doesn't seem to be the case.

  25. 25

Personally I think it's a little strange, as in, I wouldn't make the decision to pose nude with my professor but HEY! to each his own right?

  26. 26

This is no more exploitative/pornagraphic than you posting topless pictures of your favorite male celebrities with the Yummy caption you seem to love. If there is consent from all parties involved and the pretense is that it is for artistic purposes, than yes, it's art.

  27. 27

Who are you to judge what is or isn't art?

  28. 28

OMG! I graduated from Michigan State in May and this guy totally came and spoke to one of my media classes. Although I agree it's super wierd and creepy, if the students consent, knowing what they're getting themselves into.. it's their own fault really. I actually know who broke this story, so shame on them for exploiting this guy when they willfully volunteered. He's actually pretty nice.. not nice enough for me to pose nude with him though… haaha

  29. 29

Re: northdolphin – you are so right! but because he is posing with women students, it is "creepy." if the students are of age and willing to do it, what is the problem?

  30. 30

Many people have different ideas of what is "yucky". I find it "yucky" that the author of this article typed "U" instead of "you", for example.

  31. 31

A agreement between adults but ART!I doubt!
