Angelina Jolie Shares Her Thoughts On Bosnia And Directing With Newsweek

| Filed under: Angelina JolieFilm Flickers

It might be one of her best interviews to date, with a comprehensive look at not only the movie, but of the woman behind the lens herself.

Angelina Jolie sat down with Newsweek while in Bosnia making her directorial debut and shared with the reporter her process in approaching her endeavour. To hear her speak about the project with such passion is one thing, but to hear how she sat in a room with this reporter, drinking and having a merry time for eight hours is another. Sometimes, we forget that people like herself need time to relax and be normal themselves - as normal as it is to spend 8 hours talking about a movie that you yourself made!

Here are some HIGHlights from Angie's interview with Newsweek:

On working In Bosnia:

“When I go somewhere, I am always willing to learn about it. I get briefings, I read books, I talk to people,” she said. “But mainly I try to go somewhere to bring awareness, to come home and pick up the phone and call someone and try to get something done.”

On being a hands-on director:
“I wasn’t afraid to ask the DP [director of photography]. And I listened to my cast, most of whom lived through the war. I listened to their stories and tried to incorporate it into the work.”

On prepping for the film:

“[I] read a lot of books about the war. I talked to a lot of people, I watched, I listened. I just wanted to tell the real story.” She repeated what she has said several times: “I wanted to be respectful of people. [If I did not know something,] I asked.”

It's some really dark subject matter, but we're VERY interested in seeing what she does with it. Leave it to Angie to go lofty on her first time out, right?

Are U thinking of going to see her film?

Ok I've been reading about this little movie that shes making for quite some time and how shes saying she talked to people in bosnia i learned about the war and trying to tell a real story and be respectful…I'm from Croatia and I know a lot about that war being that Serbians attacked both Bosnia and Croatia and that story line that she has made has nothing to do with the reality and tragedy that happend there..it was a genocide…and for her to come in and make a joke out of it with her little love story is like a slap in the face. I'd like to se how Americans would react if she put that same love story in new york when that plane hit the Twin Towers…so Perez, no dissrespect to you,I love your blog and read it everyday, but you really shouldn't hold her so high in your eyes because shes obviously not that great of a person if shes ok with doing something like that…

She can "talk" to all the people she wants, but how she travels is well documented. She's rarely exposed to real life. Shes a high school dropout who lives in a fantasy world posing as an everyday working gal. Newsweek must be on the brink of tanking again if - given national and international issues of the day - she is the best cover news it can manage.

    Herion addict….home wrecker….and a slut.

She is amazing. I love her. Well rounded bad ass chick. A mama and a lover and always giving a helping hand.

    It went something like this.

    I love my nannies……
    I love Brad……most of the time…

    I love the attention….I'm not a whore…really I'm not…..

    I hate Jen……lol

Had a friend from HS that was croatian her parents were born and raised there and was able to leave for the US before she was born. She told me a story about the war, she had a female relative that had married a serbian but when the war started he sided with his family and so he killed her. So sad that AJolie thinks she can make a buck off of other peoples tragedies and turn it onto a love story.

Re: bladder – barf…..moron……she uses nannies…..good mothers raise their children not pay someone else to do it…..and no she doesn't have to work….she has enough money to stay home with her 6 kids…

and you make fun of the Duggards…..this woman is worse.

Re: Croatian0905 – Americans frequently use times of tragedy as a backdrop for love stories. Titanic, Pearl Harbour, etc. I feel for you, and understand what you are saying, but perhaps it is a cultural difference. Americans focus very much on the individual, and by making a story about an individual in a time of genocide is not meant to make a joke of it, but to personalize it, and make it more poignant.

Re: bladder – right on. some people are so petty, judgemental and unforgiving. very sad. must be miserable to live so negatively..

Re: Croatian0905 – I am Serbian and lived in Croatia during a war
For your information, I was attacked by Croats, some of my friends and family members were killed by Croats!
So shut the fuck up and don't tell false stories
You Croats always had and always will have a hate for Serbians
As for me, I don't hate you; I just feel really, really sorry for you and the world you live in

    Re: rosebud99

Personally i think she can film a movie about anything she want but issue for some people here ins't with the backdrop and making stories dealing with war and genocide.

To make this closer to you, she made the equivalent story of a 9/11 widow getting captured by Talibans, raped continuously and then falling in love with her raper. Of course the Taliban will probably be made somewhat human by appearing to be torn by his decisions.

Again if she wanted to make a story like this i would not attack her for it, it's her right

Why doesn't she talk about her retarded kids? She hids them and she should be talking about it to bring attention to mentally retarded kids needing support and our help. Palin brought her kid out and brought attention to the cause. Skankolina needs to quit acting like she does so much "work" for other countries.

Worry about this country and then kids here.

Re: ninaxoxoxo – Thank you. I was going to bring up the concentration camps where the Croatians killed thousands of Serbs while Croatia was a Nazi puppet state during WWII, but now I don't have to. There are good and bad people in every coutry; don't go acting like Croatia is a blameless victim.

Re: tallguy10 – She is not a high school dropout. She dropped out then went back and graduated. If you're going to make comments, please make sure you have your facts straight.

Re: likewhocares – Yeah, a heroin addict who realized she made bad choices and then turned her life around. Yeah, home wrecker. She put Brad in a body bag and gave him no choice in the matter. Yeah, she's a slut. A mother of 6 children who it committed to Brad.

  18. 18

Master manipulator. Has half of the world fooled, if not more. Oh, and how proud you must be, Angelina.

Re: ninaxoxoxo – i am not saying those things didn't happen…both sides are at fault in some way, i was talking about the side she described in her movie and that was serbs who attacked bosnian people and the way she portraited it…and about the "shut the f*** up comment"…that one said everything about the person you are, I don't have to add anything more

Re: PosseUser – nobodys pretending croatia is a blameless victm, both sides were at fault in some way, there were crimes on both sides

Did she not say she saved the "bad girl" just for Brad? She forgot to invite him to that 8 hour piss up.
