Gerard Butler Rescued From Big Wave While Filming Surf Movie

| Filed under: Film FlickersGerard Butler

Phew! Thank goodness he's okay!

Gerard Butler had to be rescued from a huge wave while filming his surfing movie Of Men and Mavericks, a new movie about Santa Cruz surfer Jay Moriarty.

The actor was shooting at Mavericks, which is known as a treacherous surf break with gigantic waves, located in Northern California. He was swimming out with some surfing experts when a 15-foot wave rolled in, holdingunderwater for several minutes!!

Holy cow!!

A safety patrolman had to swoop in on a jet ski and save Butler. He was later taken in an ambulance to a local medical center - thankfully, he wasn't seriously injured, just shaken up.

The movie features surfer Moriarty who conquered Mavericks as a teenager, but then died in a free-diving accident in 2001 when he was 23.

So scary! Those waves can get pretty high and REALLY dangerous. We're just glad Gerard didn't get hurt. Stop being such a tough guy!

Mother nature laughs at our puniness. I got my head and neck slammed straight into the sea floor by a rogue wave while body surfing in Hawaii. I'm lucky to still be completely mobile.

Got caught in a rip at Bolsa Chica (near Huntington Beach, CA) as a teen, was never so scared but managed to get out of it, throwing up on shore and lying on the beach to recover for 10-15 minutes. My friend was surfing north of me and did not see me lose my board or having problems. THIS was in Southern Clalifornia, cannot even begin to imagine surfing Mavericks, this is a really tough pro spot for experts only.
