Such a proud day for Washington state!

Although she has never been clear on her stance before, Governor Chris Gregoire announced yesterday that she not only supports gay and lesbians to marry, but will propose legislation to legalize it!

She explains:

"It's right here [points to heart] that frees me up to do this. I have not liked where I've been for seven years. I have sorted it out in my head and in my heart. I have been on my own journey. I will admit that. It has been a battle for me with my religion. I have always been uncomfortable with the position that I have taken publicly. And then I came to realize the religions can decide what they want to do but it is not OK for the state to discriminate. When someone asks me about my marriage to Mike, I don't tell them I have a contract with legal rights. I don't even think about that. What I say is I love my husband. I'm in a 36-year committed relationship. … That's what marriage really means to human beings. They (gays and lesbians) have to have the same ability to say it's love, it's commitment, it's partnership, it's responsibility. It's not a contract. They want to be able to stand in front of their friends and express their love just like Mike and I did 36-plus years ago. To deny that equality is just wrong."

Such a beautiful, heartfelt, and frankly, sensible explanation on such an important issue - that really sums up exactly why it's so important for politicians to remember exactly why there's a separation between church and state!

Thank you, thank you, thank you for taking a stand!

We couldn't be more proud and thrilled for Washington!

Good for her and Washington. However, with one intelligent, well-evolved thinker there is one ignorant backwards bigot. I hope the intelligent, evolved and enlightened out number the backwards bigots in America someday!! EQUAL RIGHTS FOR ALL.

Please God tell me you can all spot the stupid politician jumping on the gay bandwagon to score points and votes. Or is any support good support no matter how sincere or the cost? Thats why you will never win it.

Re: Truth_Is_A-Virus – Somehow, I knew that you using the word "god" would equal not supporting equal rights…."gay bandwagon"? No such thing- equal rights for all…when are people going to wrap their brains around this, it is so simple. No "bandwagon" or "special" rights, just EQUAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As a woman who has lived in Washington for my whole life, I am offended by the comments made against our Governor. I too have wrestled with the idea of gay marriage, but so what. Who cares what I think. I am not the one getting married to my same sex partner. If my best friend, who is gay told me tomorrow he was getting married I would be happy for him because he had found something a lot of people are looking for in their lives. The way I see it, if you are happy and in a committed relationship and want to get married, what right do I or anyone else have to tell you that you can't cause you are the same sex. I mean crap, there are some gay couples that have been together longer than married couples. Kim Kardashian rings a bell for me! So I say "Way to go Governor Gregoire!"

Hey, is that Norman Bates in drag?

Re: Truth_Is_A-Virus – She doesn't need support or votes considering she has announced she isn't running for a third term. So possibly, it could very well be that this is how she actually feels. Weird how that happens.

Re: Truth_Is_A-Virus – She's not running for office again, so no need to get any votes.

The United States says it's THE country for freedom. What a laugh. Same sex marriage doesn't affect anyone else except the people being married, so what's the big controversy? Oh, ya, right. God. How is the U.S. any different from Iran? I'm glad I live in Canada where we have TRUE freedom: to marry whom we want and to be free from religion if we want.

Archbishop Desmond Tutu has written about this issue, from his latest book -

"This is a matter of ordinary justice. We struggled against apartheid in South Africa, supported by people the world over, because black people were being blamed and made to suffer for something we could do nothing about - our very skin. It is the same with sexual orientation. It is a given. I could not have fought against the discrimination of apartheid and not also fight against the discrimination that homosexuals endure, even in our churches and faith groups." (page 54)

    and -

"Equally, I cannot keep quiet while people are being penalized for something about which they can do nothing - their sexuality. To discriminate against our sisters and brothers who are lesbian or gay on grounds of their sexual orientation for me is as totally unacceptable and unjust as apartheid ever was." (page 55)

Powerful words from a great man who has fought against apartheid.

Love the religious bigot, disagree with the religious bigotry.
This is a nice take on their "Love the sinner, hate the sin" slogan.
Feel free to copy this anywhere and everywhere.

In the immortal words of Austin Powers.

Re: Boarderthom – OR Love the Religious Hypocrite, Hate Religious Hypocricy! Hey, Americans look up here and see…we have gay marriage and our country is doing just fine thanks!

Re: HAWTSTUFF – got to love that you can't even write a coherent, correctly spelled sentence yet you accuse all women of being stupid. classic!

Too bad she's such a fucking twat otherwise. She's run this state into the ground since she was elected the first time, and it's not like anyone else is putting any one else more electable up against her. Thank god I'm moving in a couple months.
